the same police that discourages payment of ransom pays ransom to kidnapers this country is finished. 1 Like |
By Samuel Oyadongha, Yenagoa The police in Bayelsa State have secured the release of one Corporal Lucky Ebebi who reportedly survived last Friday violent attack on the boat conveying some policemen to Azuzuama in Southern Ijaw council area in which twelve lives were lost. Corporal Ebebi, aged 31, an indigene of Esama in Delta State, who was believed to have been killed in the ambush attack by the gunmen which claimed the lives of 12 policemen was discovered alive Wednesday night and rescued by the police after an alleged payment of N1m ransom. Though the alleged ransom payment could not substantiated, he was freed from cops killers den alongside with one Indonesian in the swamp of Ukubie. Another expatriate identified as a Greek national was said to have died in the ex-militant den. Ebebi was admitted at the Emergency Ward of the Federal Medical Centre where he was treated for minor gunshot injury and discharged Thursday morning. He was said to have reported at the state police headquarters, Yenagoa for debriefing. A doctor at the only federal referral institution in the state who spoke anonymously said “Ebebi was treated for minor bruises and discharged.” Another FMC staff confirmed the development saying the police corporal was brought in Wednesday night. According to a source, the gunmen kidnapped Ebebi after killing others and took him to a militant camp in the creek. He said, “the process of negotiating for the release of the police corporal revealed the existence of over seven armed militant camps along Lobia, Azuzuama and other communities in the Southern Ijaw council area of the state. “The police went for their own Lucky Ebebi but they discovered two other expatriates in the den of the kidnappers who were supposed to be beneficiaries of the ongoing Amnesty deal by the Federal Government.” He added that the expatriates were suspected to be a Greek and an Indonesian but could not ascertained the one that died in the kidnappers den. Contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Alex Akhigbe, said he was in a meeting. |

http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/i-insist-jonathan-signed-for-one-tenure-aliyu/ Minna — Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State has insisted that President Goodluck Jonathan signed a single term pact with some governors of the Northern part of the country ahead of the 2011 presidential election. Speaking at the Minna National Discourse on Corruption, jointly organised by Niger State government and the National Planning Commission in Minna, yesterday, the governor said what he said was correct and that he could not change what was the truth. “If to be truthful is to be literate, I stand by what I said. I am happy with what some people have said about the PDP. I see them as somebody holding something and you are telling him hold it better or it will fall down. “So we should look at the on-going problems as issues we must confront, issues that we must correct and that agreement made in secret both at the same fora is same as the one made in public,” the governor remarked. Goodluck Jonathan and Babangida Aliyu Goodluck Jonathan and Babangida Aliyu He said he still remained a committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) and that any criticism by people, especially members, was to make the party “wax stronger and stronger.” With the theme of the National Discourse as confronting ‘Trends of Indiscipline, Corruption and Disregard for Rules and Regulations in Nigeria’, Dr. Aliyu described corruption as a cankerworm that had eaten deep into the fabric of most Nigerians which must be stopped if the country had to make progress. Former Federal Permanent Secretary, Dr. Hakeem Ahmed, in his contribution, described PDP as “a failure since its inception and it is now heading for the rock.” He called on members to salvage it. If not leave it because there are other boats,” he remarked. He warned against 2015 general elections and that PDP should either win honourably or don’t tamper with the result for the survival of the country. “Whatever the administration does, there is one thing they must never try and do. Don’t tamper with the election of the 2015. “The way they are going, they think they can do away with anything in this country, but there is one thing, they will not run away with and it is, don’t tamper with the election of 2015 because if you do that, God knows what will happen to this country.” According to him: “The biggest corruption is corruption in the electoral process and I am not too sure that the people who have done what they have in the last few weeks will not also attempt to steal the election in 2015. But I pray to God that they will not steal it.” Former minister of External Affairs, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi who was the lead speaker said corruption had started since 1960 and that between that time and 2012, over 500b dollars had been siphoned out of the country. He said stiffer penalty like death sentence should be applied to any body found guilty of corruption. |

ENUGU—Tragedy struck in Enugu Saturday night when the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chinwike Asadu, was shot dead by unknown gunmen. His police orderly, Aloha Olaniyi and Driver, Oliver Omeh, who were with him at the time of the incident sustained serious bullet wounds and are said to be lying critically at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Enugu. The incident occurred at Amorji Nike, near the densely populated Abakpa Nike area in Enugu East local government area within the state capital at about 10 pm. The Police Commissioner, who reportedly visited his home in Enugu at the weekend, was driving into his private residence when the assailants who may have laid an ambush around his residence attacked him and his aides about 100 metres away from his house. CP Asadu, according to sources, had a visitor whom he escorted along with his driver and a police orderly posted to guard his residence from Abakpa Police Division, leaving behind the official escort team that came with him from Kwara State Police Command. They were returning to the house after dropping the visitor when they suddenly noticed a bus trailing them behind as they branched into his street only for the gunmen to start firing at the vehicle from the rear. The gunmen were said to have shot sporadically killing the CP and wounding the two policemen but before they escaped, they reportedly took away the rifle of the orderly whose body was riddled with bullets. The orderly was shot on the chest, stomach, hands and leg while the driver was shot on his legs. “The CP was driving into his personal residence in Amorji Nike after dropping a visitor that night. He was with a police orderly and his driver at the time of the incident. Just about 100 metres to his house they noticed that a bus was trailing them behind and before they could know what was happening the gunmen opened fire and killed the CP instantly. His orderly and driver were also shot and they were seriously wounded. “The gunmen ran away in their bus before the CP’s escort team that was inside his compound noticed what was happening. When the escort team and sympathizers rushed to the scene, they met CP Asadu and his orderlies in a pool of blood. They were rushed to the National Orthopaedic Hospital where doctors confirmed the CP dead. The other two policemen are now on admission at the hospital,” said the source. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu confirmed the incident when Vanguard contacted him yesterday, describing the attack as very unfortunate. He said that the CP was on a private visit to his home in Enugu when the incident occurred. According to him, the police would do everything possible to fish out the assailants as investigations into the bizarre incident have already commenced. The new Police Commissioner in Enugu State, Mr. Tonye Ebitibituwa, was said to have directed his men to conduct serious manhunt for the gunmen within and outside the state capital in order to track them down without delay. Meanwhile, doctors at the National Orthopeadic Hospital, Enugu are battling to save the two wounded police officers. The orderly who was seriously battered by bullets, according to doctors, was said to be in a stable condition after the surgeries conducted on him throughout Saturday night. The driver was also said to be in a stable condition. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/03/kwara-police-commissioner-shot-dead-in-enugu/ 1 Like |

http://tribune.com.ng/news2013/index.php/en/ IN a move apparently targeted against chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Sunday night announced the formation of a new forum made up solely of elected governors under the party. Governor Godswill Akpabio emerged as the chairman at meeting in the Presidential Villa presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan. Amaechi, who has recently faced discontent over his leadership style in the NGF, attended the meeting but left before it ended for undisclosed reason. The National Chairman of PDP, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, presented Akpabio to State House correspondents after the meeting, saying cheerfully that Akpabio had been elected the chairman of a brand new PDP Governor’s Forum. Addressing the correspondents, the Akwa Ibom governor said the forum was a bloc inside the NGF and was borne out of the need for PDP governors to speak with one voice. He said however that the new forum was distinct from the NGF. With the formation of the PDP Governors’ Forum, the influence of the NGF and its chairman is expected to reduce as the PDP governors make up the majority of NGF’s member. The forum is thought to have been split into two following dissatisfaction by a number of the governors over the leadership style of the chairman and Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi. In fact, it was thought the problem had prompted an attempt by some of the governors to move against Amaechi during the last meeting of the forum but Amaechi, apparently aware of the move before hand, ensured that only most of his trusted allies in the NGF were invited for the meeting. Sources said that even though he had offered to resign during the last meeting following loss of the confidence of some of the members, most of those present especially members of opposition political parties backed by Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State, kicked against the idea and he remained in the position. They had argued that even if the leadership of the NGF was to be changed, the idea need not come from the presidency. Sources told the Nigerian Tribune that Amaechi, who is strongly believed to be eyeing the vice presidential slot in 2015 under a joint tickect with Governor Lamido, has lost the confidence of President Jonathan over his premature political ambition |
