Car Talk / Re: Help! Service Engine Soon 4 Nissan Altima 2000 Model by cinzo: 6:17am On Aug 02, 2012
In car ECM Diagnostics/ECM Reset procedure:

1) Sit in the driver's seat.

2) Turn the ignition key to the ON position and wait three seconds. (Do not start the car.)

3) Fully depress and release the accelerator pedal five times in less than five seconds.

4) Wait exactly seven seconds. Fully depress the accelerator pedal for ten seconds until the SES light flashes.

5) Release the accelerator pedal and start counting flashes to obtain the four-digit trouble code.

Long flashes (0.6 seconds) indicate the first digit of the code; count the blinks one through nine and write down the first digit. (Ten blinks indicates a zero.)

The next three digits follow in turn in the same fashion except with faster blinks (0.3 second) and a 1.0-second pause between digits.

The ECM code repeats intself until you turn the ignition key to the OFF position, at which point the ECM resets itself to standard get-in-and-drive-the-car mode.

You can look up the trouble codes in the ESM/FSM; there's a bunch of them. In the ESM, refer to page EC-639.

Additionally, if you get four blinks of ten (0000), the ECM is indicating no malfunction.

You can clear the code (and the annoying SES light) by holding down the accelerator pedal for more than 10 seconds while the SES light is blinking. When you release the pedal, the ECM erases the trouble code(s).

Car Talk / Re: What Is An "Idle Relearn Procedure"? by cinzo: 10:42am On Jul 31, 2012
HOW TO RE-LEARN THE IDLE

If your battery has been disconnected for any reason, you may need to perform this procedure in order for the computer to relearn how to idle. Under most circumstances, it will relearn after just driving the car for a while, but if your car continues to experience an abnormal idle, or you just don't want to wait for it to relearn on its own, you can try this procedure.

STEP ONE:

Disconnect the Negative cable for a few minutes. While The negative cable is dissconnected, pump the brake pedal a few times to clear out any voltage in the system. Re-connect the negative cable after this is complete. Turn off air conditioning controls and all other accessories.

STEP TWO:

Run the engine up to operating temperature and shut off.

STEP THREE:

Apply the parking brake. Start the vehicle and place it in drive (A/T), or neutral (manual).

STEP FOUR:

Run the engine until the cooling fan has cycled on and off, or for a maximum of 10 minutes.

STEP FIVE:

Turn the ignition key off for at least 5 seconds.

STEP SIX:

Restart the engine and again shift into drive or neutral. Allow engine to run for at least 5 minutes.

STEP SEVEN:

Shut off engine for 10 seconds and restart.

STEP EIGHT:

That should do it. With engine stabilized and in closed loop, the IAC motor values should be between nine to 12 counts. If not, the adjustments may be tailored by adjusting the minimum air rate screw. More throttle valve opening equals lower IAC counts. Less throttle opening equals higher IAC counts.

Car Talk / Re: Engine Oil To Use In 1996 Camry by cinzo: 10:21am On Jul 31, 2012
Trac:

0w40 is a heavy oil. M1 0w40 is european formulated and it is meant for many european cars with certain engine materials and design. Sadly, it has been reduced in potency. It will not give you the protection needed for a Japanese vehicle. 20w50 is plain unreasonable for a standard performance and high performance car (maybe American cars). 20w50 should be on super performance cars and higher. It's a different issue for trucks for they are designed for torque under heavy-duty conditions. The difference in oil weight can be observed when you lift a quart each. At operating temperature and higher, the viscosity (the hotter the oil, the heavier it gets) would be too high for your chamber and it wouldn't reach the upper engine as the proper specified oil would, thus leading to poor upper engine lubrication and unaccounted burden on the oil pump.

Go for 5W40. You can get it at any good Total station. Its N8,000 for 5 litres.

Please what exactly is the common problem(s) with Nissan xterra SUVs especially the 2001 or 2002 models. I sincerely want to buy one (registered one). I love the SUV so so much.
Please am waiting for your reply.
Others who have experience can also contribute, please i need the contributions seriously. Just help a brother in need of your advice.
Thanks

bajugbajug: Nice trend to follow. But pls to all dat has contributed, kindly state the prices of parts changed, service cost etc. Tanks

I researched the SUV and the 2004 model happened to be the the one with the least factory defects and recalls so I went for that.

For those who might not know, the SUV rolls excessively sideways when you enter a pothole! And if you are looking for anything remotely luxurious, count the Xterra out! Its a work horse thru and thru.

Buying a Naija used I will not advice except you know the history of the car! Cos of Naija mechanics!!
I have used the 2004SE model for close to 2months now and I have no complaints neither have I changed any part.

hahahaha!!! grin grin grin

Are you laughing with him or laughing at his ignorance? Xterra was never built to be a luxury car! Strictly off-road with spartan interior. The sun visors do not even have mirrors!

Anyone moaning about Xterra looks both internally and externally to me is a just a novice where Xterra is concerned.

Car Talk / Re: 1999 Toyota Camry Consumes Too Much Fuel by cinzo: 6:21am On Jul 20, 2012
md_autotec: Temperature gauge should read approxoimately half within 4-7 minutes from a cold start, without AC on.After this period the upper radiator hose should be hot to the touch. If the hose remains luke warm this indicates thermostat is either not present (removed), or is opening too early relative to the specific temperature stamped on it's body. This does not allow the engine to reach it's operating temperature and the temp.gauge will read low. Engine cooling (water flow through engine cooling jackets) takes place once the the thermostat opens.

Hope this helps!

Thanks bro! Works exactly like you said.

No car can be termed unreliable per say! What abounds are unreliable mechanics especially in Naija!

Guys please how do I know if my cars thermostat is intact and working?
Car Talk / Re: Nissan Xterra Owners Forum by cinzo: 6:49pm On Jul 19, 2012
One reason I love 2004 Nissan Xterra is cos of the height from the ground. While cars and other SUV's wallow in muddy waters and pools, it goes through them with the water barely coming halfway the tires.

0w-30, 5w-30 and 10w-30. Nothing more; that is for all weather. All these oil you mentioned are not in Nigeria. The most common are 20W50, 0W40,5W40.

Car Talk / Synthetic Oil Vs Mineral Based Oil? by cinzo: 8:20am On Jul 16, 2012
Hi house, I want to know the best to use out of the 2 oils. Nissan manual says they will recommend mineral based oil in as much as it meets the API quality and SAE viscosity rating specified for the vehicle in question.

They made no mention of synthetic oil which leads me to ask if mineral based oil are superior?

Opinion please.

sultaan: I'll advice to stick to 10w30, now if you look at oil cap the one you need is written on it.

You can't get 10W30 in Nigeria.

You can use 5W40 or 20W50 oil.

Cypost: I ve used my o7 for a year n half now without issues, I just service every 3 to 4 mths, ie change oil n filter.

I however got a misfire n evap code P0300 n Po448 recently. I erased it without working on it, hoping d code will reappear but it has not for over a wk now

I ve also tried to service transmission but can't find the ATF ie Matic J. Anyone know where I can get d transmission oil.

From my xpce so far I say d ride is good n pocket friendly in as much as I ve not done any major work on it accept a repair of fuel gauge 4 8k

For your transmission oil try Alliance Autos. They sell Nissan cars along Oshodi express way. Or Sun Motors at Ijora. I know they sell Matic D for N4600 a liter.

ba_aliyah: Two posters said apart from TOPPING THE RADIATOR COOLANT and serivce. Rad Coolant is not supposed to be topped if your car cooling system is working fine. Do other Exterra owners have thesame experience.
No offense pls, the last time i added coolant to a car was 5 years ago.

Don't get me wrong. When I mean topping off what I actually meant was that I topped the run-off to where max was written on it cos the coolant level there was below the max.

Anyone moaning about the topic being on the front page shd go and open his own thread jare.

Still waiting for more Xterra owners to share their views.
