He advised that the ECOWAS should proceed cautiously with the integration agenda, taking into consideration the above concerns and the lessons currently unfolding in the European Union (EU).

Health / Buhari Meets Girl Who Donated Her Lunch Money To His Presidential Campaign by Classicjadon(m): 4:00pm On Oct 16, 2017
Three of President Muhammadu Buhari’s young admirers, including a 10-year-old girl named Aisha Gebi, from Bauchi, who wrote a her letter requesting to see him, have been hosted by the president at the state house.

The other kids, Nicole Benson, from Lagos, and Maya Jamal from Abuja alongside Gebbi, spent about 30 minutes with the president at the state house on Monday morning, October 16. The three kids have shown their support to the president in different ways. Benson, a nine-year-old pupil of Greensprings School Lekki in Lagos, made headlines prior to the 2015 presidential election when she donated her lunch ticket to then candidate Buhari as her contribution to his presidential campaign.

Maya Jamal, the three-year-old daughter of a popular social media user, “White Nigerian” was seen in a 10 second video praying for the quick recovery of Buhari while he was in London receiving treatment for an undisclosed ailment.

While, Aisha, who is a 10-year-old had penned a letter seeking a face-to-face meeting with the president, which was posted by her niece, Huseini Gebi, asking for a retweet to make her dream a reality. President Buhari’s personal assistant on new media, Bashir Ahmad, came across the letter and showed it to the president over the weekend. Buhari then asked for her to come and see him.

Below are videos and photos of Buhar's meeting with the children:

Politics / You're Accidental Presidents, Na’abba Hits Buhari, OBJ, Jonathan by Classicjadon(m): 8:12am On Oct 16, 2017

Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ghali Umar Na’Abba has blamed Nigeria’s woes on leaders who he claimed got into office unprepared.

According to him, former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umar Yar’Adua, Goodluck Jonathan and other former political office holders within the last 18 years were accidental leaders.

The development, he said, has brought about trial and error in governance and also kept the nation in political, economic and social doldrums.

“Circumstances at hand or situations on ground have, to a large extent, over the years determined who and who were elected into office in Nigeria as presidents since 1999 as against the level of preparedness on the part of the leaders in terms of clear vision and programmes,” he said.

Na’abba who stated this in Abuja during the 2016/2017 matriculation and fellowship endowment ceremony of the National Institute for Legislative Studies (NILS), said rather than prepared and vision-driven leadership, as in most other democracies of the world, Nigeria had been governed by persons who had the rein of leadership on a platter.

Na’Abba, while also expressing regret that a few politicians have hijacked leadership recruitment process in the country, called for “regular tutorials” for political leaders at all levels and for more Nigerians to participate in politics with a view to opening up the political space.

“I believe that not just the legislature, every arm of government that is serving the purpose of governance must invest in exposing democracy to the people. It is a sad commentary on our political life that today, recruitment into leadership has been subverted by a few politicians because they deny Nigerians opportunity to contest elections and achieve their aspirations through the systematic appropriation of political parties to themselves.

“These politicians have stopped the growth of democracy. And it is true that unless democracy is allowed to grow, we cannot achieve the desired political growth, we cannot achieve the desired economic growth and we can also not achieve the desired social growth. And that is why we are still in political, economic and social doldrums. We have been having successive accidental leaders since 1999.

“It is time for us to begin to understand that the more participation Nigerians enjoy in politics, the more political development we attain. And consequently, economic and social development.

“We have been advocating that tutorials must be taking place on a continuous basis for stakeholders in democracy from the local governments to the states. What is sad today is that most of those who hold positions at the executive level of our political parties cannot distinguish the duties, functions and distinction between and among our political institutions. So, with this lack of knowledge, it is almost impossible for them to understand the kind of people that should serve at various levels.”

The Presidency, however, replied, saying Buhari should not be included in the list of accidental presidents.

In response to Daily Sun’s enquiry, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina said after running for the same plum office four times before winning, he could not be classified as accidental. “If a man runs for an office four times before he wins, is that accidental?”

Also reacting, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Shehu Garba, said Nigerians voted for Buhari because they were sick and tired of leaders who lied to them, stole their money and stashed it away abroad.

“The Speaker must define for you what accidental president means. You cannot be president by accident when you bid for the job three times, and God Almighty answers and says, “yes” to you on the fourth count. This is the road President Buhari took.

“In 2015, Nigerians did not vote by accident, either. Having become sick and tired of leaders who lied to them and removed money from the treasury and stashed away abroad, they voted for Muhammadu Buhari with a clear mandate to secure and stabilise the country, fight corruption and restructure the economy. This is what the president has been busy doing.”

But Several attempts to contact the media aide to former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Kehinde Akinyemi, to comment on Na’Abba’s statement, failed as his mobile phone was switched off. Also, a short message to him was not replied as at the time of filing this report.

Politics / On This Day 16 October 1745, Olaudah Equiano Was Born | Happy Birthday by Classicjadon(m): 8:03am On Oct 16, 2017
Olaudah Equiano (16 October 1745 – 31 March 1797), known in his lifetime as Gustavus Vassa
was a prominent African in London, a freed slave who supported the British movement to end the slave trade. His autobiography, published in 1789, helped in the creation of the Slave Trade Act 1807 which ended the African trade for Britain and its colonies.

In London, Equiano (identifying as Gustavus Vassa during his lifetime) was part of the Sons of Africa, an abolitionist group composed of prominent Africans living in Britain, and he was active among leaders of the anti-slave trade movement in the 1780s.

He published his autobiography, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano (1789), which depicted the horrors of slavery. It went through nine editions and aided passage of the British Slave Trade Act of 1807, which abolished the African slave trade.

As a free man, Equiano had a stressful life; he had suffered suicidal thoughts before he became a Protestant Christian and found peace in his faith. After settling in London, Equiano married an English woman named Susannah Cullen in 1792 and they had two daughters. He died in 1797 in London; his gravesite is unknown. Equiano's death was recognized in Britain as well as by American newspapers

Plaques commemorating his life have been placed at buildings where he lived in London. Since the late 20th century, when his autobiography was published in a new edition, he has been increasingly studied by a range of scholars, including many from his supposed homeland of Nigeria.

Politics / I’ll Complete 2nd Niger Bridge, Buhari Assures Southeast Leaders by Classicjadon(m): 7:30am On Oct 14, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that his administration would facilitate the completion of the 2nd Niger Bridge, the East-West Road and the Coastal rail project, which he said are already receiving the federal government’s utmost attention.

He said counterpart funding from the Chinese government would substantially fund these projects, which, when completed, would improve the welfare, wellbeing and economy of the people in the region.

This came following a closed-door meeting yesterday with the stakeholders from the area led by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Those present at the meeting were Governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Dave Umahi (Ebonyi) and Deputy Governor of Imo State, Chief Eze Madumere.

Others were the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Geoffrey Onyeama, Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, and Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, among others.

The leaders arrived at about 1:50pm and went straight into the meeting with President Buhari in the new Presidential Banquet Hall at the Villa.

A statement at the end of the meeting quoted Buhari as declaring that: “The Chinese are very competent in handling such projects and we will ensure that we get the money for the projects to take off.

“I thank you for articulating your demands and I want to assure that we are doing our best for the country. If we can stop people from stealing, then there will be more resources to put into projects that will create employment for Nigerians.’’

Responding to allegations of under-representation of the Igbo in his government, the President said: “I gave Southeast four substantive ministers in the ministries of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Investment, Science and Technology and Labour.

“Seven states in the north got ministers of state and of the two ministries headed by your sons. I cannot take any decision on foreign policy and investments without their input.”

The President also gave assurance of his plans to pay a visit to states in the zone soon, saying: “I want to assure you that I came into government with a clear conscience and I will also leave with a clear conscience.”

Earlier, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, while articulating the demands of the zone to the President, highlighted the issue of state creation, restructuring, federal projects in the Southeast, namely Enugu-Onitsha road, Enugu-Port Harcourt road and Aba-Ikot-Ekpene road, among others.

Nwodo also demanded urgent presidential interventions on the Enugu Airport, reticulation of the gas-pipelines in the Southeast and the standard gauge plan for railway construction.

Commending the President’s achievements on security and the fight against corruption, Nwodo declared: “We are ready to work with you. We are determined to work with you. We know you are a decisive leader and we know God will continue to give you the wisdom to govern Nigeria.”

Also speaking, Umahi expressed satisfaction on the outcome of their discussions with the President on critical issues and topics affecting the region.

“You have no hatred for any state. You have treated all states with equality. What one state gets in the north, the other gets in the south,” the governor said, referring to budget support facility and stabilisation fund released to states and local governments since the inception of the administration.

Briefing State House Correspondents after the meeting, Nwodo said the delegation had a robust exchange with the President on sundry other issues including the myriad of challenges besetting the South East.

“We had a frank and robust exchange, we discussed problems of the South East and, as Head of State, he is the final repository of an appeal for the resolution of those problems.

“We went into great details about each of those problems and I have confidence that they will give it the attention they deserve.

“We dealt with the problems of development in the south east, basic capital projects which have for a very long time been neglected, not just from this government, but for a very long time, major arteries of federal highways in the South East that have been in complete state of disrepair. Enugu-Onitsha, Enugu-Port Harcourt, Aba-Ikoyi Ekpene are virtually impassable.

“We talked about the inland waterways and the dredging of the River Niger. We talked about the reticulation of gas pipeline on the southeast. “We export gas from the southeast to the other parts of the country, but there is no reticulation of the pipeline and industrial clusters in the south east.

“We talked about the only international airport we have in the South East which has very bad infrastructure in terms of the buildings that have been ravaged. “We got assurance from the president that he would deal with each of those problems.”

Nwodo further said that the issue of marginalisation also formed the crux of the meeting, adding: “That was the opening line and that was why we singled out these things.

“Like I have said, these problems have been there over time and we have had several presidents, it didn’t just happen in the last two years. But we expressed the desire that he should be able to address them.”

He said the group has no reason to doubt the president’s promises, “because this is the first time I have had this interaction with him. I have the feeling that he spoke to us very frankly.”

He told newsmen that the delegation also talked about the issue of the devolution of power and IPOB as a symptomatic consequence of the continuous marginalisation of the southeast over a long period of time.

“Understandably our children are restive and we want to make sure that the federal government is responsive to the issues that have cumulated in the quintessence of these agitations.

“We did talk about the issue of devolution of powers, the constitution, the paucity of the states and local governments in our place and the president has asked that he be given time to look at this more holistically.”

In another development, the president received the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the November 18 election in Anambra State, Tony Nwoye, promising to lead the grand finale of the campaign in Awka, the state capital.

Nwoye was led to the Presidential Villa by the Chairman of the National Campaign Council of the APC for the election and governor of Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar.

Answering questions from journalists after the meeting, Abubakar said: “I am the chairman of the National Campaign Council of the APC for the Anambra governorship election that is taking place on 18th of November this year.

“We have had our primaries and we have settled all the appeals. We have done reconciliations. “The President has received us very well and has promised us that insha Allah, he will personally grace the grand finale of the campaign in Anambra State.”

The Guardian learnt that the meeting also discussed the rising spate of agitations for restructuring, demand for the creation of an additional state in the southeast and the need for balance and equity in federal appointments in the country, among others.

Politics / NLC Slams El-rufai For Saying 21,780 Kaduna Teachers Fail Primary Four Exams by Classicjadon(m): 2:48pm On Oct 12, 2017
The Nigerian Labour Congress Kaduna chapter has condemned Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s recent disclosure of about 21,780 out of 33,000 teachers failing the primary four test in the state. Premium Times reports that Adamu Ango, chairman of the state chapter of the NLC, said El-Rufai's disclosure about the teachers' performances was not true.

Ango, however, challenged the state government to make public the comprehensive results of the said test alongside the international standard of teachers competency examination criteria.

He said: ''This is the third test conducted on teachers. Where are the rest of the results? What are the criteria, who are the bodies that are supposed to conduct these exams? What is the agreed internationally accepted pass marks and the unconcluded verification exercise?

''Or can the government organise examinations for medical doctors or lawyers? You cannot just come and set examinations and call it ‘primary four’ exam when we know it is not for primary four. ''This is just a cheap media propaganda. There is also more of politics in this examination than even the standard they are talking about.

They just want to give a dog a bad name to hang it. ''What the government is saying about teachers in the state is not correct. By tomorrow, we, together with the Nigeria Union of Teachers, shall ensure that the correct results are available to the public to judge.''
