Alhaji Aminu Goronyo, the National President, Rice Farmers Association (RIFAN), has assured Nigerians that the market prices of locally produced rice will soon crash.

Goronyo revealed in Abuja on Wednesday that the price a 50kg-bag of locally produced rice would plummet from N18,000 to between N6,500 and N7,000 by April 2018.

The United States has formally agreed to sell 12 Super Tucano A-29 planes and weapons to Nigeria, the West African country’s air force said, confirming the resurrection of a deal frozen by the Obama administration over rights concerns.

This emerged as more Nigerians are repatriated by the International Organisation for Migration with the backing of the European Union in an ongoing exercise that has seen 1,295 retrieved from Libya in November alone.

Since the beginning of 2017, IOM-facilitated repatriation has brought back 5,578 Nigerian migrants, who were trapped in and outside prisons across Libya.

On Thursday night, 150 migrants from mostly Edo and Delta states arrived the country aboard a Buraq Airplane at the cargo terminal of the Murtala International Airport, Lagos. It was two days after 239 migrants had also been brought into the country.

Armed Fulani herdsmen have reportedly killed six mobile policemen in Numan town in Adamawa State.

The officers, according to a report by PREMIUM TIMES were killed in the night while trying to make arrests at Dowaya, a predominantly Fulani settlement.

President Muhammadu Buhari plans to spend N1.001 billion on travels in 2018, details of the proposed 2018 budget released by the Budget Office of the Federation show.

The amount breaks down to N751.3 million for international travels, and N250.02 million for local travels.

The budget shows that another N907 million would be spent on a phased acquisition of new vehicles and spare parts in the presidential fleet during the year.

Additional N83. 77 million will be spent on tyres for bullet proof vehicles, plain Toyota cars, close circuit vehicles, platform trucks, Land Cruiser and Prado jeeps, Hilux, Peugeot 607, ambulances and other utility and operational vehicles for the Presidency.

On his part, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will spend about N301.04 million on general travel — detailed as N217.06 million for international travel and N83.97 million for local travel.

President Buhari last Tuesday in Abuja presented a budget proposal of N8.612 trillion for 2018, saying the projected expenditure will drive rapid economic recovery.

He said with a benchmark of 45 dollars per barrel at an exchange rate of N305 to a dollar in 2018, the budget would consolidate on the achievements of previous budgets to aggressively steer the economy to the path of steady growth.

The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon Bello, gave the indication at a forum with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

He said that although 32,000 applicants to the university scored 200 marks and above in this year’s Unified Tertiary matriculation examination (UTME), Unilag would not admit beyond 8,000.

The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Garba Umar has said plans have been made for deployment of security personnel totaling about 16,000 for the over 4,000 polling units.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise on Saturday, he gave details of how the election primaries ran hitch-free, especially because of efforts by the police, and how the conduct of the main election would be in like manner.

“As you are aware, we conducted about 35 primaries for the 35 political parties that are contesting for the November 18 gubernatorial election in the state.

“All the primaries were done successfully without any hitch, security was provided adequately, and we were able to sectorize all the major areas in the state.

“For the November 18 also, what we did was to look at possible areas first, what are the flash points, the black spots, second, where are the polling booths, we assess their position and situation and we look at our deployment, how many personnel do we need.

“We discovered that we have 4,608 polling units – these polling units will be manned by four police officers each about four security agencies in each of the polling units, and when you multiply that it would give you about 16,000 and also what we did was to identify how many streets that we think we may have problems with.

“We looked at the waterways. We have about three major areas where the riverine area may cause a problem for us – we were able to secure the police boats. These boats will be used to convey both our materials as well as our personnel that will provide a safe atmosphere for the conduct of the election.”

Doctors in India have successfully separated conjoined twin boys who were attached at the skull in a marathon surgical procedure that lasted more than 36 hours and involved 40 doctors.

The two-year-old twins, who suffered a rare condition occurring once in about 2.5 million births, underwent the operation at a government-run hospital in New Delhi on Wednesday.

“It was a team work of 40 doctors, 20 nurses and many other paramedical staff. Without their help this would not have been possible,” the All India Institute of Medical Science hospital said in a statement.

A 16-year-old boy, Adeola Okanlawan, on Tuesday told an Igbosere High Court in Lagos how his father was killed with a machete after complaining of smoke coming from a neighbour’s electricity generator.

In his court testimony as the first prosecution witness, Adeola said that their neighbour, one Ibrahim Tijani, killed his father with a cutlass in a disagreement over generator smoke.

He said that his late father had called the defendant to complain about the smoke that was coming out of his generator set into his room.

According to Adeola, his father asked the defendant to change the position of the generator set to stop the smoke from entering his room, but the defendant refused to do so.

Nollywood Actress, Funke Abisogun AlHassan is dead.

She passed on a few days after child birth.

Her husband, Toafiq Alhassan announced that she gave birth a few days ago.

But the film industry was thrown into mourning yesterday after her death was announced by her brother in-law, Tunde Ola Yusuf.

Yusuf wrote on Instagram, “ADIEU FUNKE.

Just days ago, people celebrated with you for the delivery of Ur baby, now the Sun set at noon and U are no more.

“May God look after the new born child and give Ur husband, the family, friends of the family and the industry at large the fortitude to bear the loss.
