TV/Movies / 10 Things You Missed In Anikulapo Series by Divepen1(m): 5:42am On Mar 08
Anikulapo blew up our page and the internet with its massive play on history and myth. Afromnia brings you these top 10 things you might have missed in the Anikulapo series, the rise of the specter. Some of these answers questions around the internet. Spoilers ahead and um… a little something
1. People have claimed Rolake was old at the end of the Anikulapo movie. However, it must be remembered that Saro died young, which was towards the end of the movie. And Rolake left the same period. The only place that Rolake looked emotionally drained or old was in the room. And a few minutes before and after that scene, she was young there was no way she could have been aged.
2. Adigun, the bounty hunter, stumbles on things he is looking for. Despite being hardworking, he always stumbles on what he seeks. This can be seen when he was stung to death by a viper and was later resurrected by Saro.
3. The Onibode was an albino played by Damilola Ogunsi. The Onibode represents the grim reaper. It’s ironical how many people feel it should have been represented the same way Hollywood represents their grim reapers - a black person.
While traditionally portrayed as a figure clad in dark robes, variations in its appearance exist within Yoruba traditions. Some interpretations may depict the Onibode with albinism or a pale complexion, reflecting the diverse manifestations of spiritual entities within Yoruba cosmology.
4. Did you see Ade Tiger from King of Boys played by Titi Kuti in the Anikulapo series? Well, if you didn’t, Adigun, the bounty hunter, was the actor here.
5. Saro’s first sexual meeting with Latorera looks like that of his first sexual encounter with his Awarun and Rolake. His style of almost cajoling them has some semblance with the way Awarun and Olori Rolake tried to copulate with him in the forest and bedroom.
6. 6. Owobo Ogunde, Herbert Ogunde’s son, the UK-based corporate individual who acted as Bashorun, featured in his first film here.
7. 7. The movie’s time can be traced to the 1800s. Of course, part 1 already established how slave trade was gradually creeping into western Nigeria. However, it must be noted that the Islamic religion started growing in Ede at this point, and this was reflected in the series.
8. 8. Remember when Olori Wojuola made the king leave her in Anikulapo 1, she did the same in the series. Both times were caused by her jealousy for another woman.
9. 9. While Awarun’s power or its source wasn’t totally explored, her power was made pronounced in the series. What you might have missed was when she knew Saro was having an affair with the Arolake, the former Queen. Also, the night Saro died, she saw this from her sleep. Thus, it shouldn’t feel strange that her daughter reached out to her to help Saro against the ghosts.
10. 10. Awarun is married? How when? This is not a sudden development or an afterthought. Akanji, played by Mr. Macaroni, already informed Saro that she was married. She packed away from her husband seven years before. Well, we got to know that he sent her away.
Bonus
Saro might have been reincarnated as the baby. You might have deduced it or not, but some people have been asking questions. This is glaring when the ghosts now had to lash onto the Bashorun to guide them through Onibode

The film stars Lateef Adedimeji in the lead role, portraying a young man embarking on a journey to master the art of war under the guidance of the prominent warlord Ogunjimi. However, the protagonist soon discovers that they are mere pawns in a larger game manipulated by Ogunjimi and corrupt political leaders. "Jagun Jagun" is hailed as a significant milestone for the Yoruba film industry, with both the storytelling and the directors, Adebayo Tijani and Tope Adebayo, excelling in showcasing the cultural intricacies of the Yoruba space.
2. Mami Water: C.J. Obasi's "Mami Wata" has made waves as a groundbreaking black-and-white masterpiece in Nigerian cinema. Premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, it not only marked a historic moment as the first Nigerian film at Sundance but also garnered acclaim, signaling a new era of creative exploration in Nollywood.
Directed by C.J. Obasi and featuring Lilian Soares's innovative cinematography, "Mami Wata" stands out for its bold narrative and visual storytelling. The film delves into a coastal community's life centered around their river goddess, Mami Wata. However, tranquility is shattered when a group challenges the goddess's protective powers, setting the stage for a compelling storyline.
An additional milestone for "Mami Wata" occurred on October 15, 2023, when it was selected as Nigeria's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards by The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC).

The film follows the compelling story of Jedidah Judah, portrayed by Funke Akindele herself, a single mother raising five sons from different fathers and tribes. While the first two sons responsibly support their mother, the last three engage in troublesome activities. When Jedidah faces a severe kidney disease requiring significant funds for treatment, the sons embark on a risky journey to rob Emeka's ex-boss, rumored to be involved in money laundering, in a desperate bid to save their mother's life. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when they encounter armed robbers at the scene.

4. Gang of Lagos: Jade Osiberu stirred both filmmakers and audiences with her crime-drama, "Gangs of Lagos," featuring Tobi Bakre as Obalola. This compelling film explores the intricate relationship between man and fate, emphasizing the profound influence fate holds over individual lives. Osiberu skillfully weaves a narrative that delves into significant themes, striking an impressive balance.
What sets "Gangs of Lagos" apart is its ability to translate the universal pursuit of dreams and destiny against the political backdrop of Isale Eko onto the big screen. The film resonates with viewers as it navigates the complexities of personal aspirations within the context of political realities. While not everyone may directly relate to the depicted political thuggery and violence, the essence of being entangled in others' dreams and the subsequent quest for one's path is universally relatable.

The film, handled with delicacy, provides an excellent exploration into the life of the central character, contributing significantly to the effective progression of the plot.

As one of Osiberu's standout works, "The Trade" stands shoulder to shoulder with her previously acclaimed romantic comedy, "Isoken," which made waves in 2017. At its core, the film narrates the intriguing story of Dike Maduka (Blossom Chukwujekwu), known as Eric in his circles. Eric is an elusive kidnap kingpin who, remarkably, has eluded arrest for nearly two decades while masterminding one of the country's most successful kidnapping operations.
6. Kananni: Directed by Tola Olatunji, "Kanaani" is a film that tackles important societal issues like human trafficking, the dark side of the "japa" phenomenon, and sexual violence. The film excels not just in its themes but also in how well it's executed.
One standout aspect is the impressive casting and acting, particularly by Gabriel Afolayan and Ivie Okujaye, who lead the film. Their performances are remarkable, bringing depth to their characters and enhancing the overall quality of "Kanaani."
In simple terms, "Kanaani" is a well-made movie that addresses serious issues, featuring strong performances by the lead actors.
7. Orisa: Get ready to be captivated by another thrilling Yoruba epic! "Orìṣà" unfolds the tale of a king gone rogue, disrespecting both the gods and his people, leading to his descent into madness. Meanwhile, a formidable alliance of skilled warriors poses a threat to take over his kingdom.
8. Big Love: Prepare for a rollercoaster of emotions in the romantic comedy "Big Love" directed by Biodun Stephen. Timini Egbuson stars alongside Bimbo Ademoye in this heartwarming tale. Adil (Timini) finds himself head over heels for Adina (Bimbo), a strong and independent woman navigating the challenges of a graduate training camp. However, their love faces a serious threat when a hidden secret surfaces. Biodun's attempt to resolve the situation takes an unexpected turn, revealing that the biggest challenge comes from within the family, leading to a rift that puts their love to the ultimate test.
9. Sista: Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster in this impactful film that tugged at the heartstrings and even brought out a few "gangsta tears." The story revolves around a determined single mother fiercely protecting her two children from their absentee father's sudden attempt to win them over with wealth and influence. Instead of seeking redemption and building a genuine connection, the father uses material means to entice the kids. The resilient mother takes swift action to prevent her children from being swayed by a man who never truly cared for them. The stellar performances of Kehinde Bankole, Deyemi Okanlawon, and Bisola Aiyeola have left audiences praising it as one of the best Nigerian films in recent memory.
10. Enoch: "Enoch" is a biographical film drawing inspiration from the life of Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, the esteemed general overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). The film delves into the details of his birth and childhood, highlighting his journey from a gifted mathematician to finding Christ through his future wife. For those seeking a movie to unwind with, "A Sunday Affair" proves to be a delightful choice, offering a mix of emotions that might even make you blush.
12. Adire: "After years working as a prostitute, Adire yearns to break free from her bleak life. Seductively distracted, Adire steals money, escapes to a small town in Oyo, and pursues her dream of becoming a lingerie fashion designer. However, her newfound freedom attracts attention, especially from men at the local bar. This sparks hostility from conservative Christian women in the town led by Folashade, the pastor's wife. Black Maria- Maria- Book Two
Maria was birthed by the wrong mother but brought up by the right stranger. Since her prostituting mother had deposited the infant in front of an orphanage, Maria had been cared for by the kind owner named Matron Nene. The only mother she knew was the Matron.
But her comfort was shortlived when Matron Nene was posted to an orphanage far away. The new matron had no kindness in her lexicon. She exposed the ten-year-old girl to the most brutal treatment that could be endured by a child.
Even though she was a child, Maria must find a way to escape from the clutches of the evil woman whose major intention was to sell her into prostitution. Vultures of men circled around her to have a taste of the most beautiful girl they had ever seen.
And for another ten years of her life, Maria struggled for survival. Rapists chased her, the police pursued her, she was betrayed, the threat of imprisonment loomed menacingly. She realised, eventually, that talent was not enough for her to survive. Life played a game of hide-and-seek with her. She had no choice but to steal.
But there is an enemy more brutal than Madam Comfort, his name is Officer JB, and he will not rest until Maria is totally destroyed.
This is the story of an extraordinary girl named Maria, and how she meets another extraordinary person named Black.

Black Maria: Black and Maria- Book Three

While Peter Black is planning to break out of jail, he still faces a series of adventures and challenges, for his every move is watched by his long-time friend-turned-enemy: Chief-of-Police John Balewa (Basket). To regain his freedom and secure what belongs to him, Peter Black must try to outwit Basket once again - but he must first go past the scums of earth in prison first; the worst and meanest of them all is a prisoner called Otunba.

When the old Pa Jimoh died in a ridiculous way, the elders of Ogbomosho decided to honour him with a proper burial. But the coffin-maker, Saka, chose the wrong moment to deliver the coffin as all hell broke loose on his way to Ogbomosho.

Spiral (A short Story)
He and his friend, Steve, make a pact to create a time machine. But when a mysterious figure suddenly appears from nowhere and shoots Steve in the face. He must do everything he can to find the killer, even if it means going to the past or the future.

The Brand of Cain- #500
THE BRAND OF CAIN (A body outside the house, suspicion falls inside).
Africa’s first detective tackles one of the most baffling cases of his career. Different people are brought together by a sheer twist of fate. Some are born to sweet delights where some others are born in beds of thorns.

Now, after twenty-seven years, that child is heading the path of crime his father has once trod. He gets himself employed as the driver of a business tycoon, and the shocking secrets he learns about his new u and the gorgeous wife culminate into a well-planned, cold-blooded ‘murder’.

TV/Movies / Jagun Jagun Recap by Divepen1(m): 7:41am On Aug 31, 2023
Jagun Jagun introduces the power of Ogundiji, son of Ogunrogba. He came to save a king who used him to win wars. Then, the story proceeds to introduce Gbotija from Iwon with the ability to speak to trees.
Gbotija wants to join Ogundiji’s school of warriors to avenge his family and village. Entry to the school was gruesome. They were shot at (to get only survivors) and stripped of all properties. A spy was even stopped that way. Like the Greek story of the Trojan horse.
Their training went on for days and soon they were forced to join a war begged of them by one of Ogundiji’s patrons. Their supervisors believed the war was beneath them and decided to rest. Well, this affected the apprentice warriors.
Ogundiji, who was introducing a new type of gun to his protégé, Gbogunmi (the third most powerful warrior), suddenly got a message from his powerful bees that they were losing the war. He invoked Agemo!!!
Oh! Agemo was feisty and fast. The enemies died in their numbers. At this point, the war ended and the supervisors were punished by being placed into the dungeon with no food and water till Ogundiji was appeased.
That same night, Gbotija was rude to Ogundiji’s daughter in charge of food. What do you expect!!! Baba was punished! And there goes our cry! Yeh! Yeh!
As for our jailed supervisor, Ogundiji’s wife Erinfunto was still pleading with him when a student, Wehinwo (from Alaje village. Remember that name….) sneaked up to give them food and water. Ogundiji knew and appeared there out of thin air.
There, he released the men and told them they would kill Wehinwo themselves.
Shocker! Right?
And what happened? They did. They burnt him and sent him home like a dead animal.
Such a painful ordeal! His family wept. His fiancé, who had repelled other men’s advances was thrown into turmoil. And she reached out to their village deity. Elegiri to kill Ogundiji’s wife.
By now, Kitan had admired Gbotija’s stance because despite being punished the idiot too didn’t stop talking about injustice. Talo loshi!
Their love waxed stronger than Cele and their sweet strong perfume.
In no time, the Elegiri’s guns were pointed at Erinfunto. Luckily, she just scolded Gbotija and Kitan who were doing touchy touchy outside.
Gbotija hurried to save her like Iron Man, but this time, he was the Groot. He used his ability to speak to trees and it worked.
You should know that Erinfunto too worked hard for her life that she spat more bullets than saliva after much incantations.
Gbotija felt seen.
To cap it all, he met Gbogunmi, who failed Ogundiji by not fighting a war. They met outside Ogundiji’s room when Gbotija had just been thanked by Ogundiji.
That’s how they became adopted, father and sons. Well, it didn’t last.
Ogundiji’s regular prayer needs him to show off like the end of a year party. Gbotija foolishly displayed power and missed one of the 48 laws of power- DON’T OUTSHINE THE MASTER.
Uncle did what only Ogundiji had done in life. Baba went all Odyssey on us. Well, it backfired. One of the kings played on Ogundiji’s pride. That one too… Wanting to be the only powerful person in the world went after the humble stubborn Gbotija.
Test upon test happened to him.
- Sleep in a coffin without food and water. Then, they dumped him in the river and uncle used his power to break the coffin.
- Then, he was forced to face Gbogunmi. Well, it ended well for Gbotija. The great warrior underestimated him and died faster than Prince Oberyn Martell against the mountain in Game of Thrones.
Irked, Gbogunmi asked him and only two warriors to fight against the village of Alaje- Wehinwo’s village. Ah!
Before we knew it, the warriors were drenched in blood. Not their own.
Seeing their success, Ogundiji sent Agemo to him. Uncle couldn’t fight here, he was only casting and binding. He thought he saw a demon. The thing sef was fast. His prayer worked. The trees fought for him and caught Agemo…… Yes!!!!
In the stomach!

Curious, Uncle removed the face!!! And what do we know who is it….?
It’s your one and only, blessed with black beauty KITAN
Yeh! I never expered it! No one did.
Kitan was adopted.
Gbotija yelled and wailed. Pregnant women couldn’t have felt that pain sef we saw in his eyes.
We learnt that Erinfunto used her womb for Ogundiji’s power on the agreement that he wouldn’t have a child.
Mr. Man had a child outside. Men are scum!!!!
Angered he rushed back to Ogunjimi and gave some of the blessed monologue in 2023 century. The school became divided and war.
Well, a woman offended knows how to kill. And Erinfunto weakened the man. Gbotija finished him off after he learnt that Ogunjimi invaded Iwon

I wonder why anyone should be arguing about who started Nollywood in Nigeria... Maybe we should start arguing who started Hollywood and Bollywood, too. Lol...

I saw a viral post by David Hundeyin dated July 2022 about this whole Nollywood/Yollywood thing and I'm beginning to agree with him.

You're right. It's only those that document that can really get the real stories out.
TV/Movies / These 21 Facts About Nollywood Will Tell You The Origin Story! by Divepen1(m): 7:05pm On Aug 29, 2023
In every continent, there is at least one big industry name. Hollywood for America, Europe has too many industries, Bollywood for the Indians and Pakistanis beating every Asian movie industry, and Nollywood is the biggest here in Africa. These 21 facts about the industry will blow your mind.

1. Unofficially, Nollywood started movie productions in Nigeria over fifty years ago. So long.

2. The Name "Nollywood" originated from a New York Times article the name 'Nollywood' as we now know it today can be traced to an initial usage of the word in a 2002 article by Matt Steinglass in the New York Times, where it was used to depict Nigerian cinema, and Nigerian/African diaspora movies considered to be associated with Nigeria, or made to capture the Nigerian market.

3. In 1926, Palaver was the first film recorded in Nigeria, but it was proudly racist. "Palaver, "the first-ever Nigerian movie, would seem to them like a needlessly long skit shot in Nigeria's Middle Belt. The film was shot entirely by the British filmmaker George Barkas in 1926 "among the Sura and Angas tribes on the Bauchi Plateau," according to the movie's opening credits.
4. Historically, Latola Films was Nigeria's first and earliest indigenous film production company. It started movie production as far back as 1962.

4. The first recorded Movie was Kongi's Harvest by Wole Soyinka, with Wole Soye acting as a President

5. Calpeny Nigeria Ltd spearheaded the production of the first Nigerian indigenous feature movie, Kongi's Harvest (1970), which was based on a play written by Wole Soyinka and directed by Ossie Davis

Ade Ajiboye (Big Abass) produced SOSO MEJI, the first Nigerian Video film, in 1988. It was shown publicly at Tinuade Cinema in Oworonshoki, Lagos

6. But in terms of the movie that "opened the market" and showed that a video-based industry was possible, Okechukwu (Okey) Ogunjiofor's film, Living in Bondage, has been described as 'the inaugural Nollywood film. Not this remaking you watched on Netflix

7. Visionary young trader named Kenneth Nnebue, with a passion for films, initiated an innovative idea of broadcasting NTA content using VHS (video home system) technology

8. The first actual home video in Nollywood was not produced until the early 1990s, precisely in 1992, with the release of a movie titled Life In The Slum.

9. The movie was funded by Kenneth Nnebue, a prominent electronics marketer at that time.

10. Nollywood is the second biggest movie industry in the World. Behind Bollywood.

11. The industry produces about 50 movies weekly, which translates to an average figure of 2,500 movies annually

12. Richard Mofe Damijo is considered to be the highest-paid actor

13. Nollywood produces more movies than Hollywood.

14. Nollywood isn't a Nigerian-only movie body. It's the bigger of the two, with Kannywood being the second.

15. Nollywood is Africa's most searched name on Google.
16. The first New wave film to be shown at a cinema was the Yoruba-language film Irapada (2006) by Kunle Afolayan, which was screened at the Silverbird Galleria in Lagos.

17. Nigerian Movies received a total of 165,000 searches every month, and Nollywood Movies totaled 49 500 searches

18. A lot of Ghanian movies are copyrighted to Nollywood due to its market's size

19. Nollywood's tentacles spread to movies produced in English, Igbo, and Yoruba.
20. Lionheart by Genevieve became the first Nollywood film on Netflix and the first to be nominated for Oscar (but was later disqualified for more English conversations).
21. Nollywood movie Citation, a film by Nigerian director Kunle Afolayan, was named the best international film at the 2022 National Film Festival (NFF) in the United Kingdom

One of the things I don't like about the movie was the costume style.
I could say the only person whose appearance I agree with was Ibrahim chatta, and the scene itself was cool.
Overall itwas a good watch

What was wrong with the consume?
Were those not traditional ones again?

Meanwhile you don't want to miss these:

TV/Movies / 10 Things You Probably Missed In Jagun Jagun by Divepen1(m): 4:58pm On Aug 23, 2023
The allure of power often makes us overlook our values. Such was the story of Jagun Jagun, the film by Femi Adebayo, featuring Lateef Adedimeji, Gbotija, as a young man who became the servant of Ogundiji, the fearsome warrior. In his quest to hold on to love interest and also gain power, he unleashes his demons and lost almost everything.
Afromnia brings these top things you might have missed in the film Jagun Jagun. Some of these things were brought to the forefront by social media users and critics.
Warning: Spoilers ahead!!!

1. To start with, do you know that Oba Solomon was in Jagun Jagun. Who is Oba Solomon, then watch this video!!!! He was also a King here over Aje Village (Ilu Aje).

2. Aside Ogunjimi and the kings, every other person had their head skinned (Fadon)

3. Jimi Solanke was the voice of the narrator. Now, you must have seen him in Kongi’s Harvest or Sango.

4. It’s funny how the name of Jagun’s Wife wasn’t used throughtout the movie…

5. While there might have been several notable cameos like Odunlade starting the movie and Ibrahim Chatta ending it, you might have missed Niyi Johnson (Toyin Aimaku’s ex) acting the role of soldier Odunlade Adekola sent to get the crown. Yeah! That was him.

6. One cannot overlook how the Baobab tree (Igi Oshin) tried stopping Gbotija from going to school of Warriors. Was the tree

7. It's only Kings that are not using Ogundiji as their war machine are the only ones defeated in wars (the kingdom of Aje, Iwon and others).

8. Another foreshadow was when Kitan told Gbotija that he shouldn't say 'Agemo should kill him' (this happened after he defeated Gbogunomi, and he was scared of the next test)

9. Wehinwo can be spotted giving a tired soon-to-be Ogundiji's warrior water at the entrance of the school gate. It's this same kindness that resulted in his death.

10. Gbogunmi did with the “Things Fall Apart” line “This boy calls me father, I’m not suppose to have a hand in his death”
