Nigeria’s federal government, through the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), has queried Wema Bank Plc over illegal banking practice in the country.

This comes after allegations that the bank and its agents have been opening unauthorized accounts for customers with information sourced from their Bank Verification Number (BVN) details.

Ms Deborah Emmanuel Yakubu, a Christian female student brutally murdered by a mob in Sokoto State for allegedly insulting Prophet Mohammed, was framed by a colleague whose love advances she turned down, according to fresh information on the incident.

Deborah, a native of Tungan Magajiya Rijau LGA, Niger State who was studying at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was on Thursday, stoned to death and subsequently set ablaze by her fellow students after being accused of blasphemy.

However, according to an account by Azzaman Azzaman, a popular evangelist from Kaduna State who knows the murdered student, she was only set up by a Muslim student whose love advances she turned down.

Azzaman in a post on his facebook page, said the young man whose love proposal Deborah rejected, fabricated the blasphemy story and got her killed in the most brutal manner.

Atiku Abubakar has deleted posts he shared on his Facebook and Twitter pages about Christian girl, Deborah Samuel who was killed by a mob in Sokoto state over alleged blasphemy.

The politician who shared the posts around 10:20 p.m. on Thursday May 12, deleted them less than an hour later after some Northerners threatened not to vote for him in the 2023 presidential election.

Popular Instagram celebrity Hushpuppi has received fresh charges as US prosecutors submit court documents showing how he committed fraud and laundered over $400k from behind bars.

US prosecutors presented documents before the United States District Court of California on Wed 16th March 2022 with fresh evidence indicting HushPuppi of committing fraud and money laundering in U.S Federal correctional facility. The court documents stated that Hushpuppi, while in U.S Federal correctional facility, participated in the purchase and laundering of Economic Impact Payment debit cards fraudulently obtained from stolen data of U.S citizens and residents.

Economic Impact Payments are financial support offered by the US government to U.S residents according to the CARES Act. One of the ways eligible US residents receive their Economic Impact Payments is by debit cards. From the documents presented in court, it was found that hackers use data of U.S residents to file and obtain Economic Impact Payments debit cards. They sell off these EIP cards in underground marketplaces to other cyber criminals.

Veteran Nollywood actor, Lari Williams has died. He died at the age of 81 after a protracted illness.

Confirming the development in a statement was a family member on Monday.

The veteran actor died in his hometown, Ikom, Cross-River.

Williams was educated at CMS Grammar School, Lagos.

He was the first actor to ever perform on top of Zuma Rock in Abuja FCT, 1,200 feet high, where he performed his late friend, Maman Vatsa’s poem, ‘The bird that sings in the rain.’

Williams was the first president of Actors’ Guild of Nigeria in today’s Nollywood. He was in the cast of Village Headmaster, Nigeria’s first soap opera.

Singers Zinoleesky and Mohbad were in the early hours of today arrested by the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA.

The Marlian music stars, were arrested during a raid conducted by operatives of the Agency.

Germany’s Lufthansa group is suspending flights to and from the Ukrainian cities of Kyiv and Odessa from Monday, a spokesperson said on Saturday amid growing fears of a possible Russian invasion.

The company, which owns Germany’s flagship carrier as well as Eurowings, Swiss, Brussels and Austrian Airlines, will conduct some last flights to those cities over the weekend before suspending flights.

The suspension will last until the end of the month, the spokesperson said.

Lufthansa said it will continue to fly to the city of Lviv in western Ukraine where some countries have moved their embassies, the spokesperson said.

Lufthansa is constantly monitoring the situation and will decide on further flights at a later date.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday declared a nationwide strike and ordered all its members to vacate the classrooms immediately.

The union at a news conference said the strike was to compel the federal government to meet its demands.

ASUU’s President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, said the industrial action would last for an initial period of four weeks.

He said the union did not want the students to be at home and would not want the academic calendar disrupted, but lamented that the demands of the union was not yet met by the government.

There are indications that the former Vice President and aspirant for the office of the President in the 2023 general election on the platform of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, may have picked Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, as his running mate in place of Peter Obi.

Obi, a former Anambra State governor, and economist was Atiku’s running mate in the 2019 general election. A former banker and technocrat, Obi brought charisma to the 2019 electioneering campaigns with his brilliant knowledge of economic management.

Sources say Atiku’s decision to dump Obi was because he allegedly made little financial contributions to the 2019 campaign purse as well as inability to win his state Anambra and the South East for the party in the presidential election.

“Prior to the 2019 election, Governor Peter Obi didn’t have a strong political structure outside the South East. People just loved him because of his vast knowledge of the economy, winning an election goes beyond all that.

“For instance, since he left office and joined PDP he has not been able to have his nominees win the governorship election in the state. Although he is brilliant and can speak good grammar, interprets the economy very well, winning an election is much more than that. How much did he bring to the table?

Popular aphrodisiac seller, Hauwa Muhammed, popularly known as Jaruma, has been granted bail.

Jaruma was arraigned before an Upper Area Court in the Zuba area of Abuja on Monday for alleged defamation of character, false news publication and intimidation of business tycoon, Ned Nwoko, on social media.

Nwoko had accused Jaruma of publishing falsehoods on her Instagram page against him and his wife, Regina Daniels, who is an actress.

The judge, Ismaila Abdullahi, on Monday ruled that she should be remanded in the Suleja Correctional Centre pending the bail hearing on Friday.

Juruma arrived at the court premises in a black veil around 11:20am.
