Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has sacked the Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso, Prof Michael Ologunde.

The governor’s decision was communicated in a letter through the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, on Friday.

The letter read, “His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State and the visitor to the Ladoke Akintola University, has directed that the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. M. O. Ologunde should step aside until further notice.

“Consequently, the VC has also been directed to hand over forthwith to the next principal officer in rank in order to ensure uninterrupted flow of normal activities of the institution.”

The PUNCH had earlier reported that Makinde accused the vice-chancellor of instigating workers of the university to agitate payment of unpaid salaries.

Makinde had said he was surprised that workers at the university started agitating payment of outstanding salaries immediately after the crisis rocking the university was resolved.

The Oyo State Government had taken ownership of the university formerly owned by the state and Osun State.

Education / WAEC: Kaduna Reopens Schools August 8 by dontacky: 7:39pm On Aug 03, 2020
The Kaduna State Government has directed secondary schools to open from August 10 to enable Senior Secondary School Three students to write their Secondary School Certificate Examination.

The state Commissioner for Education, Dr Shehu Makarfi, said in a statement in Kaduna on Monday, that the directive was in compliance with the Federal Ministry of Education resolution for schools to open on August 4.

This, according to Makarfi, is to enable final-year students to write their West African Examination Council, National Examination Council, and other certificate examinations.
“Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i has approved Monday, August 10 as the resumption date for the SSS 3 students that are expected to begin their WAEC examination slated for August 17.

“Therefore, the Ministry of Education is directing all school principals to arrange to receive SSS 3 boarding students on August 9 and day students on August 10.

“All administrators of public and private schools are to note that the one-week period commencing from today is to allow for necessary preparations and arrangements to meet COVID-19 guidelines for the opening of schools.
Principals are to ensure compliance to agreed guidelines, which include reduced hours of work/revision to four hours per shift, social distancing in classes, laboratories, libraries, and hostels,” he said.

He added that there should also be consistency in temperature monitoring and handing over of any suspected case of COVID-19 to health authorities.
He warned that no school should open before August 10, except for boarding schools, where students are expected to arrive on August 9.

The commissioner further directed private secondary schools in the state to report their readiness to open to the schools’ Quality Assurance Authority.
He said private schools should report, using the appropriate checklist and obtain a written ‘no objection to open’, on clean bill of health.

He also asked that the head of higher institutions and principals of secondary schools should report to the relevant department in the ministry.
Makarfi said appropriate dates for other examinations would be announced in due course, including school opening for the rest of the classes including SSS1, SSS2, JSS 1 to 3, and primary schools.
He encouraged schools to continue the e-learning programme using Google class, Zoom, radio and television, and other online platforms until normalcy returned.

Education / Resumption: FG Delegation To Inspect 104 Unity Schools by dontacky: 7:27pm On Aug 03, 2020
The Federal Government would embark on an assessment tour of all Unity schools in the country as students in exit classes resume for academic activities on Tuesday, the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, has said.

According to him, the intended tour which would be led by him, aims to assess the level of preparedness of the various institutions.

A statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations in the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Bem Goong, quoted Nwajiuba as saying this during an online meeting with the 36 State Commissioners of Education.
He said the Permanent Secretary in the FMoE, Sonny Echono, and the Directors of the ministry would join him in the assessment tour.

The statement reads, “Ahead of August 4 2020, the Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba has announced that all the 104 Unity Colleges are ready to open their gates to exit classes tomorrow.

“Announcing the preparedness of the Unity Colleges at a meeting with Honourable Commissioners of Education of the 36 States of the Federation this (Monday) morning via the Zoom platform, the Minister lauded Principals of Unity Colleges for the comprehensive preparation put in place for resumption.
Across states, Honourable Commissioners reported varying degrees of preparation and readiness for reopening between August 4 and 10 for virtually all schools within their jurisdictions.

From today (Monday), the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Permanent Secretary and Directors will embark on an assessment tour of all Unity Colleges to ascertain and confirm the reports they have received from the Principals of Unity Colleges.
“Similarly, Federal Education Quality Assurance Directors deployed to the States have been directed to monitor compliance in their respective states.

Honourable Commissioners from the States were enjoined to embark on assessment tours in their jurisdictions to ascertain the level of preparations for reopening.
“While most schools will reopen tomorrow (Tuesday), others will continue to fine-tune their preparations in the coming days for reopening.

Education Minister, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, is asking all schools to communicate their specific reopening dates to their parents and students in order to avoid chaos in the system.
All returning students are to undergo temperature checks among other protocols before being admitted into their schools.”

Education / Poor Preparations Threaten Students Resumption This Week by dontacky: 6:11pm On Aug 03, 2020
Most schools lack hand-washing points, running water, PPE, others

Lagos, Ogun, other SSS3 students resume Tues, Gombe, Enugu undecided

Dayo Ojerinde, John Charles, Adeniyi Olugbemi,Wale Oyewale, Daud Olatunji Ada Wodu, Raphael Ede, Abiodun Nejo and Grace Edema
States were on Sunday divided over the Federal Government’s directive that the Senior Secondary School 3 pupils should resume on Tuesday in preparation for the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations starting on August 17.

Findings by The PUNCH show that SSS3 pupils in Lagos, Benue, Kwara and Ogun states are preparing for resumption on Tuesday, while WASSCE candidates would resume in Cross River State on Monday (today).

Enugu, Gombe and Rivers states have yet to announce the resumption dates for their pupils, unlike Ekiti State, where pupils will resume on August 10.
The PUNCH’s investigations, however, showed that many state governments had yet to provide running water, hand-washing points and other non-pharmaceutical materials stipulated in the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 guidelines for resumption of schools.
Recall that the Federal Government had on Monday said SSS3 pupils would resume on Tuesday.

The Minister of State (Education), Emeka Nwajiuba, however, explained that only COVID-19 protocol compliant schools would resume.
According to him, schools must provide running water and hand-washing points sanitisers.
On Sunday, our correspondents observed that many state governments had not met all the PTF guidelines.
No sign of preparation in Benue schools
In Benue State, the state government has not put in place necessary measures that could prevent the spread of COVID-19 among pupils and teachers on their resumption.

The state government, through the Commissioner for Education, Professor Dennis Ityavyar, had last week announced Tuesday as the date for reopening of Primary 6, JSS 3 and SSS 3 classes.

But one of our correspondents, who went to some schools in Makurdi, the state capital, on Sunday, reported that there were no signs indicating the preparedness of the state government to reopen schools in line with the Federal Government’s protocols.
It was gathered that government had yet to fumigate any school in the state neither was there anything to suggest that pupils would be resuming on Tuesday.
At the Government Model Secondary School, Makurdi, there was no hand-washing points at the entrance of the school or the classes. No hand sanitisers were seen in and around the classes.
Also, at the Mount Saint Gabriel Secondary School, Makurdi, St. Joseph Secondary School, Nyiman, and the LGA Pilot School, Wurukum, the situation was the same, as there was no facility to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on the premises.
At the Arabic School, Lobi Quarters, the gate was locked, but a peep into the premises through the fence indicated that the environment was bushy which might pose a serious danger to pupils on resumption.

Efforts to speak to the Commissioner for Education, Ityavyar, proved abortive as he could not be reached on the telephone. He did not respond to the SMS sent to him.
Give us PPE, others if you want us to resume, Gombe tells FG
In Gombe State schools, including Orji Secondary, Gombe and Government Science, Lakanje, Kaltugo, there was no provision for hand-washing materials.
But the state Commissioner for Education, Dr Habu Dahiru, in an interview with The PUNCH, said the state had yet to decide on the date when its SSS3 pupils would resume.
He stated, “If the Federal Government will give us what is required to resume at their stipulated time, we will. But if they can’t give us a penny and they say open on August 4, I don’t think that is fair.

If they say open schools on August 4 and the NCDC (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control), prescribes necessary things, states should be given sometime to get them before schools are reopened.”
There are no teachers to handle extra-classes – Sokoto teacher
Also, in Sokoto State, The PUNCH correspondent observed that schools had not started making preparations for resumption of SSS3 pupils.

The Sokoto State Government has announced Tuesday as resumption date for SSS 3 pupils.
A visit to some of the schools clearly indicated that they were not in compliance with the guidelines.
At the Sultan Attahiru Secondary School, Sokoto, there were no wash- hand basins at the school entrance on Sunday.
A worker resident in the school said,

“There are no wash-hand stations either with soap and sanitizers within the school premises. A water reservoir is even a no-go area.
“It is easier to adopt physical distancing in the classrooms, meaning we can use other classes since it is not all the pupils that are resuming, but do we have enough teachers to handle the extra classes?” he asked.
The SSS3 pupils in Cross River State are to resume on Monday, August 3. The Special Adviser Education to Governor Ben Ayade, Castro Ezama, said,

“They will resume tomorrow to prepare for their exams.”
In Ekiti State, the state government stepped up preparations for resumption of schools on August 10. It was gathered that materials such as soap, sanitisers and infrared thermometers would be distributed to public schools this week.

The state Commissioner for Education, Foluso Daramola, in a statement titled, ‘Press release on the reopening of schools in Ekiti State’ on Sunday said the training of focal persons for the schools would begin on Tuesday.

He stated, “Principals/headteachers are also to arrange their halls/hostel dormitories in conformity with COVID-19 protocols for physical/social distancing.

They are also to adhere strictly to all the guidelines already distributed to both private and public schools.”
On its part, the Oyo State Government explained the need to adjust the school calendar in the state to ensure uniformity with the recent adjustment made by the Federal Government.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology in the state, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, said this in a statement on Sunday titled, ‘School reopening, Oyo government hails teachers, provides details of new school calendar.’
He stated, “Terminal classes, including the Senior Secondary School 3; Junior Secondary 3 and Primary 6 pupils resumed classes in Oyo State on July 6, despite the alarms raised by the Federal Government and some education stakeholders.

”
The Enugu State Commissioner for Education, Prof Uche Eze, said the government would soon announce the date the pupils in exit classes would resume, adding that decontamination of schools commenced last Friday.
In Lagos State, when one of our correspondents visited Anwarul Islam Girls High School, Ojokoro, on Sunday, he noticed that the school did not make provision for hand-washing points within the school or outside the school gate.

The classrooms were also not marked to give room for social distancing among the pupils as of 6pm when the correspondent visited there.
At the Lagos State Model Senior College, Meiran, some parents brought their children who would resume.

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, had on Friday. said the government would provide face masks for all schools.
No running water, hand-washing points in Ogun schools
In Ogun State, none of the schools visited had sanitisers and hand-washing points at their the entrances.
Schools visited in Abeokuta included Lafenwa High School, Premier Grammar School, Unity High School, St. John Anglican High School and Reverend Kuti Memorial Grammar School.
When contacted over the development, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Kunle Somorin, said, “No school is in session. Schools are resuming on Tuesday. Teachers and school administrators will be there as from tomorrow (Monday) Ogun.”
We will fix them on Monday, says govt
Also reacting, the Special Adviser to Governor on Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs. Ronke Soyombo, said the items would be fixed on Monday.

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board ( JAMB) has concluded arrangement for the conduct Mock Examination slated for 18th February 2020 nationwide. The Mock examination is at no cost to the candidates except the N600 payable to the private centre owners for candidates posted to centres not owned by JAMB.

Candidates can print their mock examination slips that are available online now to know when and where to take the examination. The Mock Examination, which is voluntary, was an initiative of Prof.Is-haq Oloyede preparatory to the main UTME.

The Mock Examination helps candidates to be in tune with the rudiments of the Computer Based Test (CBT). It also helps the Board test its facilities with a view to having a hitch-free examination.

We also advise all candidates, both those taking the mock exam and those that are not to ensure they download the JAMB CBT Mobile App for 2020 UTME and/or 2020 JAMB CBT Computer Software from Myschool. It will help you to equally prepare your self and get ready for the main exam which is the reason for the JAMB Mock.

It is important to note that results from the Mock Examination would not be added or have any effect in the main examination. The Board also wishes to state that the era of regularisation or condonment of illegal admissions is over.

Crime / UTME/DE 2020: Candidates Urged To Report Anyone Charging Above The Approved Fees by dontacky: 10:00am On Jan 22, 2020
The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Is-haq Oloyede has stated that any official found selling the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) forms to applicants above the official price of N4,000 would be arrested and prosecuted by the personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

He said that candidates charged above the approved fee by any selling outlet including private Computer Based Test (CBT) centres and banks should report to the nearest NSCDC office.

He made this known during an interactive meeting with stakeholders at the NSCDC Headquarters in Abuja According to him, the N3,290 out of the N4,000 paid by the applicant was for the form, N500 for booklet while N210 was deducted as bank charge.

The Registrar further disclosed that, so far one bank, as well as several CBT centres and schools in Anambra, Delta, Bayelsa, Enugu, Rivers and Adamawa, were found to have increased the amount and that punitive measures were taken against them.

One suspect, allegedly selling forms above N4,000 in Warri, Delta state was paraded at the event. In his remarks, NSCDC Commandant-General, Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu, said state commandants involved in the UTME exercise who violated the trust reposed in them would have themselves to blame. He said, “Nigerians have confidence in you, don’t betray it. If you mess up, I will send you out.”

Education / UTME: JAMB Withdraws 11 Centres’ Licences For Charging Above N4700 by dontacky: 6:17pm On Jan 21, 2020
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board has withdrawn licences from 11 centres for charging candidates exorbitant amount in the ongoing 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations registration.

Registrar of the board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, made this known at an interactive session with stakeholders in Abuja on Tuesday.

The registrar listed some of the centres whose licences were withdrawn for selling forms at N5,000 as Federal Polytechnics, Mubi; Adamawa; and Adazi-Nnukwu ICT/CBT.

Others are New Kings and Queens Bayelsa, for selling at N5,500; Brightfield Secondary School Delta, for selling between N6,000 and N8,000; A-Pagen Consolidated Port Harcourt, for selling at N5,000 and Influencial School Port Harcourt, for selling at N6,000.

Also included are Emkenlyn Computers, and Nneameka Secondary School Anambra.

Oloyede said the proliferation of tutorial centres was a major concern as most of the centres engaged in fraud and corruption, during registrations and examinations.

Oloyede said charging above the stipulated N4,700 for the 2020 UTME registration was illegitimate and would only destroy the nation; as it was an act of fraud and corruption.

Many people make illegitimate money from the examination and we will be destroying the nation, if we don’t get things right.

“Prior to 2018, we sell form for N5,000; but the Federal Government considers so many things and felt the money was much and in 2018, President Muhammadu Buhari decided that the cost should be slashed; which brought the cost to N3,500.

“Also, prior to this time, there were unscrupulous people selling as high as N10,000. We now democratised the sale of the forms, to make it available so that it will not be possible for those selling to hoard the forms.

We felt the banks are overcrowded so we decided to expand the sale outlet, to bring in mobile money operators to cover all the registered banks.

“The effects of the expansion is that some people are still penetrating the banks, thereby increasing the cost of the sale of form, ” he said.

NAN reports that the cost of the registration is N3,500, cost of materials is N500 and N700 for the CBT centres – totalling N4,700.

Education / IPPIS: ASUU Gives Details Of Meeting With Buhari by dontacky: 10:11pm On Jan 14, 2020
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, on Tuesday, dismissed suggestions that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has directed the stoppage of salaries of university lecturers yet to enrol into the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a statement in Abuja, giving brief details of the lecturers’ meeting with the President on Thursday.
ASUU’s President, Prof Biodun Ogunyemi, led national officers of the union to the meeting, which started at 3pm.

Ogunyemi, in the statement on Tuesday, also said rumours that Buhari directed stoppage of lecturers’ salaries were fake.

He emphasised that ASUU met with Buhari on Thursday and discussed the IPPIS issue, which the union had rejected “with sound reasons.”

“To put the records straight, at no point during the meeting did President Buhari put a closure to the ongoing discussion on ASUU’s preference for the University Transparency and Accountability Solution.
“He also did not direct that salaries of ASUU members be stopped for failure to enroll in the IPPIS.
“Any report to the contrary is circulated to mislead the public,” he said.

Education / Muslim Group MURIC Reacts As WAEC, JAMB Clash by dontacky: 9:48pm On Apr 04, 2019
The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has reacted to the clashes in the recently-released timetables of West African Examination Council, WAEC, and the Joint Admissions Matriculations Board, JAMB.

Candidates preparing to take the examinations of the country’s twin examination giants have complained bitterly about the clashes.

MURIC made this known in a press release signed by its Founder and Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola and made available to DAILY POST on Thursday.

MURIC said, “We call on both WAEC and JAMB to quickly synergise. Some WAEC subjects will be taken on a day that a crucial JAMB paper will also be examined.

“For instance, WAEC students who are expected to write Animal Husbandry next week by 9 am on Thursday, April 11, 2019 are also being expected to sit for their JAMB paper on the same day and at the same time. This is impossible unless the candidates are miracle workers.

“The future of our young ones is very important to us regardless of their religious background. Any candidate who misses a JAMB paper will have to wait for a whole year before having another opportunity.

“With what is happening in the society nowadays, it is not advisable to allow these youths to remain idle for twelve good months. An idle hand is the devil’s workshop.

“We are certain that all these occurred inadvertently. Both JAMB and WAEC are reliable examination bodies and we do not doubt them.

“JAMB in particular has witnessed unparalleled reengineering under its quintessential and indefatigable registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede.

Our appeal is that both examination bodies should go back to the drawing board and work it out together in the interest of these young and innocent candidates and their parents. There is no time to lose.

“Finally, MURIC commends the transparency and professionalism of the two examination bodies.

“We salute their staff for the sacrifices made annually. Our plea is for a review of the imminent clash in the crucial examinations before they are due next week.”

With this Law in place, any student who wish to apply for admission into University of Lagos or other higher institutions in Lagos State will need to have a Credit Pass in Youruba Language regardless of their intended course of study.

In addition, all state-owned tertiary institutions are to incorporate the use of Yoruba Language in the General Studies (GNS) courses.

The Law equally stated that any school in Lagos State that fails to comply with the provisions of Section 2 commits an offence and is liable on first violation to issuance of warning and on subsequent violation be closed down and also pay a fine of N500,000.

This has attracted mixed reactions from the public. While some are in support of this development, others are not for obvious reasons. Whats your take on this?

Education / Breaking News: Jamb Extend 2018 Jamb Registration [read Here] by dontacky: 9:35pm On Feb 06, 2018
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) announces the extension of registration for 2018 UTME till midnight of Sunday, 11th February, 2018.

Education / Jamb To Extend 2018 Registration Date – Ondo Town Crisis by dontacky: 12:25am On Feb 06, 2018
Considering previous experiences, one may draw conclusion that this year jamb may likely be postponed .

Over five thousand candidates were present at the jamb accredited, O.B.H.S Ondo Boys High School Ondo Town in the the supposed capital city of Nigeria, Ondo state. Other centers were also fueled by jambites that weren’t attended to. By guessing , about 60 thousand jambites are yet to be attended to in Warri . If jamb fail to extend the registration/pin purchase from tomorrow to any suitable date, they should consider this year registration a disaster to jambites.

For the sake of Jambites , i personally appeal to them to extend the date . please.

Politics / Workers To Strike Next Week Over Petrol Price - Unions by dontacky: 4:08pm On May 14, 2016
Nigerian unions on Saturday called for a national strike
from next week to protest a 67 percent increase in the
pump price of petrol in Africa’s largest crude producer.

“If by midnight on Tuesday next week the government
fails to reverse the price of petrol to 86.50 naira per litre,
we will have no other option than to order workers to
begin an indefinite strike from Wednesday,” Nigeria
Labour Congress (NLC) general secretary Peter Ozo-Eson
told AFP.

He said the decision was taken after a meeting of both the
NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) — the two
umbrella organisations for Nigerian workers.

“We have directed our affiliates and civil society allies to
mobilise their members for the impending showdown with
government over this anti-people policy,” he said.

Ozo-Esson said the proposed strike was also to force
government to reverse a recent hike in the electricity
tariff in the energy- starved country which generates just
around 4,000 megawatts for a population of more than
170 million people.

The unions said businesses including banks, airports,
seaports, markets and government offices would be shut
during the strike.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, yesterday arraigned
one Nura Amadi (pictured) before a Justice of the FCT High Court,
Abuja on a five count charge bordering on misappropriation of funds
and issuance of dud cheques.

According to EFCC, Nura Amadi, a former staff of Balis Bureau de
Change Limited, Abuja was allegedly entrusted by his company with
money to the tune of N24.4million including $20,000 for the purpose
of trading for the company sometime in 2014, but he dishonestly
converted it all to his personal use.

In a bid to refund the money, Amadi twice issued cheques that were
returned unpaid when presented at the bank due to insufficient funds
in his account. After further efforts by the company to recover the
money were futile, he was turned in to the authorities.
