Politics / Trial & Error Political Office Holders by Eggcelent(m): 8:21pm On Oct 20, 2018
Nigerian electorates often vote based on bandwagon effects & not on any scientific analysis of the party/candidates. And this euphoria voting is one of the reasons we are being short-changed by the politicians cos they know we hardly look at their scorecards in previous positions held before deciding whether or not they deserve our votes.

In 2011, Nigerians voted for President Jonathan not because he did anything monumental as a deputy governor, governor, vice president or acting president. We voted voted for him because he has had a political journey & a name (Goodluck) which were fanciful. Simply put, his electoral victory wasn't based on his competence but on the romance of his political journey.

No wonder we called him clueless & all sorts after about 2 years of his presidency & subsequently voted him out in 2015. The euphoria had gone & the reality of his (in)competence/suitability for the job stared us in the face.

In 2015, we repeated the mistake we made in 2011. Popular cliches among Nigerians then included; "anyone but Jonathan", "even if Buhari presents a NEPA bill as his academic credential, we will vote for him"

It was another period of much emotions without substance & analysis as to how ready Buhari was for the huge task of leading Nigeria. We never asked what he achieved as governor of old Gongola state. We didn't bother to ask what he achieved as a minister under a military regime. We didn't look closely at his records as a former military head of state & his time at helms of affairs of PTF. Even if we did, it wasn't based on objective analysis with a view to determining his suitability for the job he was applying for.

Presently, Buhari is being described by growing number of Nigerians as incompetent, too old, sick, nepotic, despotic, bigot, etc. In all honesty, can we say we didn't know about these attributes before the 2015 presidential election? We chose to close our eyes to the reality cos we wanted Jonathan out at all cost not minding who takes over

It seems to me that we are about repeating the same mistake with 4 months to another presidential election. The present euphoria is "Atikulate". We are all gearing up to vote for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar without looking at his public service records. We are not beaming our search light on his politics to determine his character. We are not checking his previous positions on national issues to see if they are consistent with what he is telling us at this time.

Unless we learn to take a step back from the euphoria & ask critical questions about those seeking elective positions, Nigerians may continue to elect their presidents & governors in a 4 year cycle of trial leading to errors & more regrets. For the sake of our children, it's time to start making the right decisions.

Politics / Defence HQ Responds To Trending Video Of Ill-treated Soldiers by Eggcelent(m): 6:32am On Sep 26, 2018
In a series of tweets on its handle, @DefenceInfoNG this morning, the Defence Headquarters have debunked impressions created by a trending video of men of the Nigerian Army fighting Boko Haram terrorists as facing unhealthy conditions.

See tweets

1. The Defence Headquarters wishes to respond to a trending video clip and story alleging that the soldiers fighting Boko Haram terrorists beg for food and sleep in classrooms. There is  nothing farther from the truth than the story.

2. The DHQ hereby draw the attention of the media and the  general public to activities of fifth columnists whose only objective is to collaborate with enemies of our nation to prolong their own organizational interests.

3. The story/video is one of their many strategies targeted at breaking the cohesion and the fighting spirit of the troops.

4. It is a known fact that all over the world, the battlefront is not a playground. What differentiates soldiers from civilians is the ability to endure hard conditions and make sacrifices.

5. Same goes for accommodation at the  battlefront as the soldiers are either on the move or in trenches. Accommodation where necessary, are makeshift and not expected to be luxurious. That is the reality and price of the Military profession. There is no easy way.

6. For those who may not know, there is no barracks in Sambisa forest and several other troops locations in the North East. Also, troops are promptly paid approved operational allowances aside other welfare and administrative arrangements.

7. Whereas there may be challenges in the battle-space which is normal, appropriate measures are being taken to address them.

8.The story is a failed attempt to distract the purposeful direction in the counter-terrorism fight. The Armed Forces is stating categorically here that its fighting spirit is indomitable and no amount of falsehood can distract us from fighting terrorism to a conclusive end.

9. The public is hereby enjoined to disregard the publication and continue to give the military the needed support and cooperation. Together we shall bring total peace and security to our fatherland.

Politics / Newsboko Haram: Nigerian Army Uncovers Online Platform Where Insurgents Recruit by Eggcelent(m): 5:45pm On Aug 14, 2018
The Nigeria Army on Tuesday, said it had uncovered a Facebook account and other social media platforms allegedly used by a faction of the Boko Haram sect to recruit new members.

Major Murtala Usman, Artillary Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, who disclosed this while speaking at the ongoing Nigerian Army Combat Support Training Week in Maiduguri, said the social media accounts had 2,000 followers.

He said that insurgents from the Albarnawi faction of Boko Haram were recruiting new members on social media platforms like Facebook, Whatsapp, SnapChat, Instagram and Youtube.

Usman said the army discovered this while interrogating a “highly placed Boko Haram commander known as Malu-Mamman Barde’’, who was tracked and apprehended 40km South of Rann area in Kala-Balge Local Government Area of Borno.

“Barde is among the most wanted Boko Haram suspect that had committed so many atrocities against humanity.

“Through the suspect’s mobile phone, we found several videos soliciting finance for the group. We also found offensive some other videos where Barde was seen preaching Jihad and the ideology of the group.

“Most of Barde’s pictures were that of Abu-Mosad Albarnawi and other Boko Haram fighter posing with Anti-Air craft guns, rockets and Boko Haram flag,’’ NAN quoted him as saying.

Earlier speaking, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai said that the training was to draw up strategies for various military operations across the country.

Burutai was represented by the Commander of Training and Doctrine, Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Salihu.

He added that the training was designed to adopt new strategies to combat insecurity in the country through brainstorming and reviewing of operations.

Politics / Why I’m Leaving APC, Joining PDP – Saraki by Eggcelent(m): 8:03pm On Jul 31, 2018
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has provided reasons why he left Nigeria’s ruling party, APC, for the main opposition party, PDP.

Mr Saraki earlier on Tuesday announced his defection.

In a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES by his spokesperson, Mr Saraki accused influential persons of the APC of intolerance and causing his exit.

“While I take full responsibility for this decision, I will like to emphasise that it is a decision that has been inescapably imposed on me by certain elements and forces within the APC who have ensured that the minimum conditions for peace, cooperation, inclusion and a general sense of belonging did not exist,” he said.

Read Mr Saraki’s full statement below.

I wish to inform Nigerians that, after extensive consultations, I have decided to take my leave of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is not a decision that I have made lightly. If anything at all, I have tarried for so long and did all that was humanly possible, even in the face of great provocation, ridicule and flagrant persecution, to give opportunity for peace, reconciliation and harmonious existence.

Perhaps, more significantly, I am mindful of the fact that I carry on my shoulder a great responsibility for thousands of my supporters, political associates and friends, who have trusted in my leadership and have attached their political fortunes to mine. However, it is after an extensive consultation with all the important stakeholders that we have come to this difficult but inevitable decision to pitch our political tent elsewhere; where we could enjoy greater sense of belonging and where the interests of the greatest number of our Nigerians would be best served.

While I take full responsibility for this decision, I will like to emphasise that it is a decision that has been inescapably imposed on me by certain elements and forces within the APC who have ensured that the minimum conditions for peace, cooperation, inclusion and a general sense of belonging did not exist.

They have done everything to ensure that the basic rules of party administration, which should promote harmonious relations among the various elements within the party were blatantly disregarded. All governance principles which were required for a healthy functioning of the party and the government were deliberately violated or undermined. And all entreaties for justice, equity and fairness as basic precondition for peace and unity, not only within the party, but also the country at large, were simply ignored, or employed as additional pretext for further exclusion.

The experience of my people and associates in the past three years is that they have suffered alienation and have been treated as outsiders in their own party. Thus, many have become disaffected and disenchanted. At the same time, opportunities to seek redress and correct these anomalies were deliberately blocked as a government-within-a-government had formed an impregnable wall and left in the cold, everyone else who was not recognized as “one of us”. This is why my people, like all self-respecting people would do, decided to seek accommodation elsewhere.

I have had the privilege to lead the Nigerian legislature in the past three years as the President of the Senate and the Chairman of the National Assembly. The framers of our constitution envisage a degree of benign tension among the three arms of government if the principle of checks and balances must continue to serve as the building block of our democracy. In my role as the head of the legislature, and a leader of the party, I have ensured that this necessary tension did not escalate at any time in such a way that it could encumber Executive function or correspondingly, undermine the independence of the legislature. Over the years, I have made great efforts in the overall interest of the country, and in spite of my personal predicament, to manage situations that would otherwise have resulted in unsavoury consequences for the government and the administration. My colleagues in the Senate will bear testimony to this.

However, what we have seen is a situation whereby every dissent from the legislature was framed as an affront on the executive or as part of an agenda to undermine the government itself. The populist notion of anti-corruption became a ready weapon for silencing any form of dissent and for framing even principled objection as “corruption fighting back”. Persistent onslaught against the legislature and open incitement of the people against their own representatives became a default argument in defence of any short-coming of the government in a manner that betrays all too easily, a certain contempt for the Constitution itself or even the democracy that it is meant to serve.

Unfortunately, the self-serving gulf that has been created between the leadership of the two critical arms of government based on distrust and mutual suspicion has made any form of constructive engagement impossible. Therefore, anything short of a slavish surrender in a way that reduces the legislature to a mere rubber stamp would not have been sufficient in procuring the kind of rapprochement that was desired in the interest of all. But I have no doubt in my mind, that to surrender this way is to be complicit in the subversion of the institution that remains the very bastion of our democracy. I am a democrat. And I believe that anyone who lays even the most basic claim to being a democrat will not accept peace on those terms; which seeks to compromise the very basis of our existence as the parliament of the people.

The recent weeks have witnessed a rather unusual attempts to engage with some of these most critical issues at stake. Unfortunately, the discord has been allowed to fester unaddressed for too long, with dire consequences for the ultimate objective of delivering the common good and achieving peace and unity in our country. Any hope of reconciliation at this point was therefore very slim indeed. Most of the horses had bolted from the stable.

The emergence of a new national party executives a few weeks ago held out some hopes, however slender. The new party chairman has swung into action and did his best alongside some of the Governors of APC and His Excellency, the Vice President. I thank them for all their great efforts to save the day and achieve reconciliation. Even though I thought these efforts were coming late in the day, but seeing the genuine commitment of these gentlemen, I began to think that perhaps it was still possible to reconsider the situation.

However, as I have realized all along, there are some others in the party leadership hierarchy, who did not think dialogue was the way forward and therefore chose to play the fifth columnists. These individuals went to work and ensured that they scuttled the great efforts and the good intentions of these aforementioned leaders of the party. Perhaps, had these divisive forces not thrown the cogs in the wheel at the last minutes, and in a manner that made it impossible to sustain any trust in the process, the story today would have been different.

For me, I leave all that behind me. Today, I start as I return to the party where I began my political journey, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

When we left the PDP to join the then nascent coalition of All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014, we left in a quest for justice, equity and inclusion; the fundamental principles on which the PDP was originally built but which it had deviated from. We were attracted to the APC by its promise of change. We fought hard along with others and defeated the PDP.

In retrospect, it is now evident that the PDP has learnt more from its defeat than the APC has learnt from its victory. The PDP that we return to is now a party that has learnt its lessons the hard way and have realized that no member of the party should be taken for granted; a party that has realized that inclusion, justice and equity are basic precondition for peace; a party that has realized that never again can the people of Nigeria be taken for granted.

I am excited by the new efforts, which seeks to build the reborn PDP on the core principles of promoting democratic values; internal democracy; accountability; inclusion and national competitiveness; genuine commitment to restructuring and devolution of powers; and an abiding belief in zoning of political and elective offices as an inevitable strategy for managing our rich diversity as a people of one great indivisible nation called Nigeria.

What we have all agreed is that a deep commitment to these ideals were not only a demonstration of our patriotism but also a matter of enlightened self-interest, believing that our very survival as political elites of this country will depend on our ability to earn the trust of our people and in making them believe that, more than anything else, we are committed to serving the people.

What the experience of the last three years have taught us is that the most important task that we face as a country is how to reunite our people. Never before had so many people in so many parts of our country felt so alienated from their Nigerianness. Therefore, we understand that the greatest task before us is to reunite the county and give everyone a sense of belonging regardless of region or religion.

Every Nigerian must have an instinctive confidence that he or she will be treated with justice and equity in any part of the country regardless of the language they speak or how they worship God. This is the great task that trumps all. Unless we are able to achieve this, all other claim to progress no matter how defined, would remain unsustainable.

This is the task that I am committing myself to and I believe that it is in this PDP, that I will have the opportunity to play my part. It is my hope that the APC will respect the choice that I have made as my democratic right, and understand that even though we will now occupy a different political space, we do not necessarily become enemies unto one another.

Politics / REVEALED: Soldiers Absent In Zamfara Villages Despite Frequent Deployment Of Tro by Eggcelent(m): 5:26pm On Jul 31, 2018
Nigerian soldiers are difficult to come by in the villages of Zamfara despite frequent deployment of troops there, Amnesty International Nigeria has said.

Osai Ojigho, Director of Amnesty International Nigeria, made the revelation on Tuesday in a press statement on the agency’s findings on the killings in Zamfara State.

“Between Sunday 7 and Thursday 12 July, Amnesty International visited communities in five local government areas of Zamfara state — Zurmi, Maradun, Maru, Anka and Tsafe,” he said.

“Although security forces were present in the state capital Gusau, researchers saw soldiers and air force personnel in only two of the villages they visited, Birane and Bagega.”

That visit was just four weeks after the Inspector General of Police announced — at the end of a National Security Council meeting held between security chiefs and the President — that 2,000 special security personnel comprising the Military, Police and Civil Defence would be deployed to Zamfara.

Amnesty lamented that insecurity continues to escalate in the northwestern state, with daily killings and kidnappings by armed bandits leaving villagers in constant fear of attack.

Last Friday, 18 villages in the Mashema, Kwashabawa and Birane districts of Zurmi Local Government Area of the state were attacked, leaving at least 42 people dead. At least 18,000 residents of the affected villages who were displaced over the weekend are now taking refuge at various locations in the local government headquarters. The following day, a further 15 people were kidnapped in Maradun local government area.

On Saturday, President Muhammadu Buhari announced the deployment of 1,000 troops to Zamfara — the third time in less than a year that the authorities have deployed the military in response to attacks.

However, villagers told Amnesty International that this has not translated into protection for remote, vulnerable communities.

“Previous military interventions have failed to end the killings, especially in rural areas of Zamfara. At least 371 people have been killed in Zamfara in 2018 alone, and at least 238 of these killings took place after the deployment of the Nigerian air force. The government is still neglecting the most vulnerable communities in this region,” said Ojigho.

He said villagers described the feeling of helplessness and living on edge, constantly bracing themselves for attacks.

“Men said they are sleeping outside their homes and in trees as a way of keeping vigilant, while women and children are sleeping together in groups for protection,” read the statement.

“Villagers described a pattern where they receive warnings ahead of attacks, including by phone, ordering them to pay huge sums of money or be killed or abducted.”

He quoted a villager from Gidan Goga as saying: “Before Ramadan, the bandits called with the same number they called me with two weeks ago and said if we didn’t pay them N500,000, they would come and kidnap me or the village head. Right now, we are living in fear.”

The statement added: “In several communities, villagers said they were afraid to venture more than a few kilometres into the bush, which is preventing them from farming. They would not take Amnesty International researchers to see attack sites for fear of meeting the bandits, highlighting the unrelenting threat of attack.

“A village elder from Gidan Goga told Amnesty International: ‘We cannot go to farm far from our village. Two weeks ago, I got a call from one of the bandits, saying they are the 'owners' of the forest. He asked me to tell the village head to tell all villagers close to the forest to vacate the villages and come here, Gidan Goga. He said the only way they’d allow the villagers to continue staying was if they paid them N5million.

“In a village in Maru, villagers said the only time they see security forces is when they are escorting workers to the state governor’s farm.”

One man was quoted as saying: “There’s no security here and we live in fear. We can’t go to farm because of fear, meaning it is difficult to feed our families. To go to farm, you need security. The governor’s farm is not too far from here and security forces go with his workers whenever they have to go there.”

“The crisis in Zamfara is making life hell for villagers, yet it is clearly low down on the list of government priorities,” Ojigho added.

“These killings must stop immediately, and those suspected of criminal responsibility must be brought to justice in fair trials. The Nigerian authorities have a responsibility to protect the lives of everybody in the country, including people in poor and rural communities.”

Career / How To Introduce Yourself So You’ll Be Unforgettable (in A Good Way!) by Eggcelent(m): 12:52pm On Jul 31, 2018
If you can move beyond the boring basics when you’re asked “What do you do?”, you’ll set yourself up for new relationships, opportunities and revelations, says introduction expert Joanna Bloor.

Mingling at a work event inevitably means being asked the question “What do you do?” over and over again. After years of repetition and conditioning, most of us respond with “I’m job title X at company Y.” And while this is the answer people expect, it’s also likely to linger in your new acquaintance’s mind only until it’s replaced by what the next person says to them.

“Answering with your title and company is the cultural norm. But when you do, you’re missing out on an opportunity for the other person to know who you actually are. You are not just your job,” says Joanna Bloor, CEO of Amplify Labs. She specializes in helping people discover and articulate what makes them distinctive so that they can form deeper connections with others.

And it all starts with how you introduce yourself.

Bloor’s own answer demonstrates the power of an original response. If she answers “I’m CEO of Amplify Labs,” her questioner will probably go on to ask about what it’s like to be a CEO or what is Amplify Labs. But those lines of conversation don’t really allow a person to really know Bloor. So, when she’s asked “What do you do?”, she replies: “Do you like your own answer to the question ‘What do you do?’?” People invariably admit they don’t. She then says, “I know — everyone struggles with it, yet the answer can have massive impact. I work with people on crafting an answer that is bold, compelling, authentic and unique. I help you tell people why you’re awesome.”

Introducing yourself this way isn’t just about standing out in a crowded room or cutting through extraneous jargon and chitchat. By naming your special sauce upfront, says Bloor, you’re increasing the chances that the other person will bring up an opportunity, relationship, business or idea that could help you. As Bloor puts it, “When you get your introduction right, the opportunity is not only to genuinely connect with people, but you’ll also be allowed to do the work you really want to do.”

Be warned: crafting your intro takes a bit of time and effort. But as the world of work continues to change in ways we can’t anticipate, knowing what sets you apart from the pack is crucial. Here, Bloor tell us how you can come up with your new response to “What do you do?”

1. Go beyond your title.

The first thing you need to do is figure out who you actually are. Bloor asks her clients, “What is it you would like to be known for?” It’s an uncomfortable question, but she finds it jolts people out of their comfort zones. Rather than relying on previous accomplishments, you’re forced to consider what you’d like your impact to be.

Bloor used this tactic on me. My typical response to “What do you do?” is “I’m a journalist and playwright.” But after she asked me what I loved about these professions and what I hoped to accomplish through them, she helped me craft a much deeper and more compelling response: “The world can be an overwhelming place, so I help people connect to each other by telling stories as a journalist as a playwright.”

2. Think about the problems that only you can solve.

Bloor believes that everyone, no matter their job or industry, is essentially a problem solver. So when she interviews people to help them discover their unique story, she’s also trying to find out the problems they’re particularly good at solving.

Use this tactic on yourself. What problems do you solve at work? And what makes you especially effective at doing so? Framing yourself as a problem-solver may trigger an instant reaction when you meet someone new. “I have that problem, too!” they could say. Figure out how to deliver your capabilities in a single sentence. For example, instead of saying “I’m a lawyer who specializes in X type of law,” you could say, “I think the biggest problem about the justice system is A. As an attorney who focuses on B, I’m helping find solutions through doing C.”

3. Ask your friends and colleagues for input.

It’s often hard for people to see their own skills. “The thing you are fantastic at can be as natural to you as breathing, so you don’t value it,” says Bloor. If you’re having a difficult time identifying your talents, she suggests you turn to the people who know you well and ask them “What is it you see that I do well and that I’m unaware is really special?” You’ll generally find common themes or language in their responses, says Bloor, even if they’re people from different parts of your life.

4. Flash back to your childhood.

Still stumped? Step into a time machine, and think back to your eight-year-old self. What were you great at during that age? According to Bloor, that special skill can often apply to your present and future selves and help you see how you’re different from everyone else. For example, when Bloor was eight, she had a great sense of direction and easily memorized routes while hiking with her father. That skill translated into her previous career of building software for companies — she could visualize 3D maps of software architecture.

5. Show a little vulnerability.

Finding people that we connect with can be elusive, especially at work-related events. “I think a lot of the angst in the workplace and angst with each other is because we don’t talk about who we really are as people,” says Bloor. So, take a chance, open up in your opening remarks, and reveal something honest about yourself. Use phrases, such as “I’m really passionate about X” or “What excites me most about what I do is Y,” which can communicate your emotion and enthusiasm and prime others to respond in kind.

6. Gather some feedback on your introduction.

After you’ve crafted your opener, practice it on five people you know well. Then, a few days later, ask them ‘What do you remember most about my intro?” Their few-days-later response will tell you what is most memorable about your opener, what you could alter, and what you might try to lean into when meeting new people.

7. Blame it on someone else.

When you first start trying out a new way of introducing yourself, you’ll probably feel nervous. Bloor suggests prefacing it with, “I’ve just learned a new way of introducing myself and I’m experimenting with it. Can I try it out on you?” People love to be asked for their advice or input.

8. Resist going back to the same-old intro.

The truth is, it will always be easier to say the stilted “I’m job X at company Y,” stumble through small talk, and then move on to the next person and glass of wine. In addition, when you give a nontraditional introduction, you will inevitably run into some staid folks who don’t get it.

But Bloor urges people to persist. She recently coached a woman named Rumi, whose standard intro was “I’m a copywriter.” After the two women worked together, Rumi realized what her secret strength is: her ability to be the other person in her writing. What’s more, the process of crafting a new opener made Rumi realize that “the part of me that I am ashamed of — being the perpetual outsider — is the very place from which my bulletproof power springs forth.”

Like Rumi, you may find that coming up with an authentic, personal introduction leads to deeper revelations in your life. “We all want to learn and figure out why we matter on this planet and in this life,” says Bloor. “And it can start with being able to answer the question ‘What do you do?’ better.”

Politics / Minimum Wage Committee To Round Up Negotiation Soon – Wabba by Eggcelent(m): 7:16pm On Jul 30, 2018
President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba has assured Nigerian workers that ongoing negotiations for a new national minimum wage will be concluded before the end of August, expressing the hope however that implementation will begin immediately.

Wabba also said that despite claims by government that the country has exited recession, Nigerians were yet to see the results of the exit as the social and economic situations of average Nigerians are daily becoming bleaker than before.

The Congress also said that the numerous problems facing the country and its people are signs of bad governance and bad leadership which has characterized the nation’s democracy since 1999.

Speaking at the 16th Rain School and the 32nd in the sequence of the NLC National Schools, with the theme “Labour, Politics and National Unity: Expanding the Frontiers of Workers’ Participation”, President of Congress, Comrade Ayuba Wabba said the Labour movement remains the only institution can integrate the Nigerian people because it is never divided along primordial lines.

He said: “The Nigerian nation is undergoing numerous challenges ranging from economic crisis, security crisis and other socio-cultural challenges that we must all come to terms with and collectively tackle.

“Innocent lives are being killed and dispensed with, as human lives do not count so much to those committing these heinous crimes. Young people are being exploited and used by disgruntled people who are manipulating them because of the crisis of development which have created mass poverty, unemployment and inequality in the country.

“The numerous problems confronting the country and its people are signs of bad governance and leadership which has characterized our democracy since 1999.

“The Labour movement remains the only standing political institution that has the wherewithal to make national integration possible. This is because; we are never divided along sentimental lines that other political institutions are known with. And that is why we keep insisting that ethnic and religious sentiments have no place in the movement.

“We are amused that some politicians in the name of expanding the frontiers of capitalism do not see any good in the existence of trade unions. They have forgotten that the working people are the producers of wealth which service their political careers from where they are occupying the political positions.

“It is in the face of practicing an obscured and jaundiced capitalism that many state governors deliberately refused to pay the salaries of the workers and pensions in their states.

“One very saddening case is that of Kaduna State, where Governor Nasir El-Rufa’i has embarked on an illusory agenda of ensuring that trade unions become extinct by stopping payment of salary, pensions and check-off dues.

“Let me have it on record those governors and other political officer holders are elected or appointed to serve the people and not kill them through stoppage of the means of their survival and that of their organizations.

“Nigerians have been told that the country has gotten out of recession, but we are yet to see the result of the exit of the country from recession as the social and economic situations of average Nigerians is daily becoming bleaker than before.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress acknowledges the performance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the conduct of elections especially, Congress commends the sterling performance of the INEC in the conduct of the recent governorship election in Ekiti State which was adjudged to be free and fair and devoid of violence by observers.

“Congress is excited with these performances and in this light wants to call on INEC to come up with some innovations that can make our electoral system better.

“As the 2019 General elections approach, Congress implores the political parties and politicians to conduct themselves in a civilized way that is in compliance with international best practices through observance and adherence to the electoral rules and regulations.

The Congress and other stakeholders are still meeting on the issues of minimum wage and hopefully will round up by August 2018. With Minimum wage as one of the most important ways of motivating workers to provide effective service, it is envisaged that, its implementation will engender growth not only among the public sector workers but also among the workers in the private and informal sectors of the economy.

In Addition, the financial benefits associated with the minimum wage would trickle down to the whole society. It is instructive to state that the Congress will continue to pursue its goal of ensuring Labour participation in politics using its structures and programmes.

Politics / NAF Bombs Boko Haram Hideouts In Borno, Kills Insurgents by Eggcelent(m): 5:17pm On Jul 30, 2018
The Nigerian Air Force said on Monday scores of Boko Haram terrorists have been killed during air strikes in Tongule, south-west of Dikwa in Borno State.

The Spokesperson for NAF, Air Vice Marshal Olatokunbo Adesanya, said in a statement that the air operation was conducted after an Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform has been used to establish the presence of Boko Haram fighters in the area.

Adesanya said the mission was planned and executed to prevent the terrorists from carrying out attacks against troops’ location in the general area.

He said: “The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE, on 29 July 2018, successfully conducted a massive attack on Tongule Village, 9km South West of Dikwa in Borno State.

“The successful air strikes were sequel to a credible intelligence that several Boko Haram Terrorists (BHTs) were massing up at the location, having occupied the entire village.

“Consequently, the mission was immediately planned and executed to prevent the BHTs from carrying out attacks against troops’ locations in the general area.

“Upon receiving the intelligence, the ATF scrambled NAF Alpha Jet aircraft and Mi-35M helicopter gunships, which subsequently attacked structures occupied by BHT elements in the location with bombs rockets and canons, in quick succession.

“As a result of the air strikes, several BHTs were neutralized in the village while a few survivors, seen fleeing the location, were taken out in subsequent follow-up attacks.

“There was also intensive damage to the settlement as captured by the NAF Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform.”

Politics / BREAKING: Court Stops Imo Lawmakers From Impeaching Deputy Gov by Eggcelent(m): 4:18pm On Jul 30, 2018
Justice Ben Iheka of the Imo State High Court on Monday restrained the panel set up by the Chief Judge of the state, Paschal Nnadi, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Acho Ihim, and the State House of Assembly from taking any further action in the impeachment process of the state deputy governor, Eze Madumere, until the hearing and determination of the suit.

The panel was set up by the chief judge to investigate the allegations of gross misconduct leveled against the deputy governor by the state House of Assembly.

Justice Iheka also directed the three members of the impeachment panel that were yet to be served the motion for interlocutory injunction to respect the suit, which is before the court.

Counsel to the deputy governor, Ken Njemanze (SAN), told the court that his client was ready and prepared to allow his impeachment process to be determined by the court.

He said that his client was relying on the court to dispense justice in the matter which bordered on the person and office of the state’s Number Two citizen.

Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Militus Nlemadim (SAN), said he was opposing the plaintiff’s request for the court to grant an interim order as sought by his colleague.

Nlemadim said that instead of an interim order, there should be an accelerated hearing, stressing that the duty of the panel had already been spelled out by the Constitution.

After hearing from the counsel, the court granted the request made by counsel to the embattled deputy governor and adjourned till August 13.

Hundreds of commercial tricycle riders in Borno state have barricaded all major routes and highways of Maiduguri, as they protest alleged ill treatment by the police in the state.

Though it is not clear what actually triggered off the protest, some of the commercial tricyclists under the aegis of All Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria are accusing the police of alleged extortion.

Their action has since caused massive gridlock in most part of the city.

Army officers have also been mobilised to the streets to chase the commercial tricycle riders from the major junction.

At the Lagos street, soldiers were seen mounting watch on the major junction there while ordering every commercial tricycle to continue driving on.

But one of the protesting Keke-NAPEP members at the Motor Traffic Division of Dandal police station, Bala Isa, said they would not leave even if soldiers asked them to.

“The police have been harassing us too much of late,” said Mr. Isa.

“Dandal Police station is even one of the most notorious police stations where our members are frequently maltreated and extorted over flimsy offences.”

At some point, the policemen on guard in front of the police station fired tear gas canisters at the protesting Keke-NAPEP riders.

Efforts to get the ACOMORAN leader for comment proved abortive.

The police too have not issued a statement on the development.

Career / 7 Things The World Richest Never Do by Eggcelent(m): 3:25pm On Jul 26, 2018
Our habits tend to define who we are. If you make it a point to drive recklessly every day, nobody will be surprised when you eventually get into a traffic accident. This seems obvious to us. Yet the financial equivalent of this principle, tolerating bad monetary habits on a regular basis until you’re driven into poverty, seems less obvious. For the most part, the richest people in the world didn’t get to their position overnight. They didn’t stumble into money, and it wasn’t given to them as a gift. They accumulated it, and continue to maintain it, as a direct result of their daily habits and their underlying philosophies.

These are seven things you’ll never catch the world’s richest people doing:

1. Playing the lottery. The lottery comes with a bold promise: a chance to win more money than you’d ever know what to do with. But the odds of winning are astronomically low, and logically, you have a far better chance of creating your own wealth than getting lucky and winning someone else’s. The world’s wealthiest people had no interest in taking chances; instead, they chose to forge their own paths, and as a result, they worked harder, and saw more tangible results. Plus, remember that instant wealth means nothing if you don’t know how to manage it–countless lottery winners found themselves bankrupt shortly after winning because they splurged or managed it poorly.

2. Hoping for better outcomes. There’s nothing inherently wrong with hope; it’s a positive emotion that leads us to more optimistic lives. But for the world’s richest people, hope isn’t nearly enough. Hope doesn’t solve problems. It doesn’t create opportunities. It doesn’t change anything. If you want to move past a certain chapter of your life, or achieve a certain outcome, you have to move beyond hoping and start taking action. Only through initiated, meaningful changes will you be able to make any difference. The next time you find yourself in a bad situation and hoping for something better, stop hoping and make a better situation for yourself.

3. Abandoning their goals. Goals are crucial for success; they keep you focused, they help you prioritize, and they lead you to bigger, better things. By some estimates, 80 percent of the world’s richest people make and follow goals regularly. Compare that to only 12 percent of the poor. But it isn’t enough to merely create goals–it’s the process of sticking with them, no matter what, that separates the strong-willed from the weak-willed. If you set your goals sufficiently high, you won’t be able to hit all of them all the time. But instead of giving up when you fail to meet a goal, it’s better to transform or reimagine that goal. Keep making progress.

4. Forgoing self-improvement. Self-improvement is a crucial step in accumulating wealth. People tend to make money based on how valuable they are, and their monetary value stems from their experience, their skills, their expertise, and their familiarity with their respective industries. All these qualities can be meaningfully enhanced through simple, gradual exercises, such as reading the news every day or going out of your way to challenge yourself and build up your skillset. In the words of Richard Branson, “I see life almost like one long university education that I never had–every day I’m learning something new.”

5. Living above their means. When most people fall into debt or find themselves unable to pay the bills, it comes down to one critical mistake; living a lifestyle that requires a greater income than you’re actually receiving. Imagine for a moment you make N250,000 a month, and you pay N150,000 in rent and about N70,000 in other regular expenses. That only leaves you N50,000 leftover–if rent goes up or you have an emergency, you’ll immediately start accumulating debt, which becomes more and more difficult to pay off. The world’s richest people got to where they are and continue to stay there because they live below their means. If they made N250,000 a month, they’d make sure their expenses never went above, for instance, N180,000, leaving an ample N70,000 a month for unanticipated expenses, saving, and investment.

6. Settling for less. Rich people started out with their minds made up. At some point, they decided they were going to be rich someday. They convinced themselves that they deserved to be rich, and they started seeing their lives in different terms because of it. While not necessarily demanding, rich people never settle for less when they know they deserve more. They negotiate. They seek higher salaries. They look for better opportunities. They don’t just accept things and move on; they’re always looking for the best of all possible scenarios.

7. Letting their money sit idle. Last but not least, you’ll never catch one of the world’s wealthiest people keeping money in an idle bank account. You need to make your money work for you by investing it in something–it could be stocks, bonds, mutual funds, real estate, or anything with a proven track record of success. Investing lets your money earn you passive income, which if reinvested creates a powerful system of compounding interest. Otherwise, inflation will continue to rise and your money will actually lose value.

Eliminate these bad habits and reckless decisions from your daily life, and eventually, you’ll find yourself in a much better financial position. Again, there are no shortcuts, so understanding these concepts won’t help you get rich overnight, but they will help you set a long-term course for a much brighter future.

Celebrities / Meet The 4 Years Old British Royal Worth Billions by Eggcelent(m): 6:33am On Jul 23, 2018
Considering the impressive palaces, jet-set lifestyles and celebrity status that goes along with being a member of the royal family, you might assume that they are all outlandishly wealthy. While they likely enjoy a higher level of wealth compared to most people residing on Planet Earth, they may not be quite wealthy enough to join the ranks of the super-rich. Although the exact figures are not known, a number of very capable people have devoted significant time and effort towards coming up with a reasonable estimate of the royal family’s wealth. These conclusions place their combined net worth somewhere between $775/£590 million and $1 billion / £750 million.

Few of us would turn down the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of their fortune, but there are far more impressive fortunes under the control of world leaders that might leave the British royals feeling a bit behind. For example, the king of Saudi Arabia is estimated to be worth around $17/£13 billion while Thailand’s top monarch is said to have a whopping $30/£23 billion under his control. Even some of her subjects have more wealth than Queen Elizabeth herself! What about the other royals? Here’s a look at what kind of cash the most-recognized royal family members may have at their disposal.

1. Queen Elizabeth

Starting, of course, with the queen herself, we discover that she has around $425/£320 million. A good portion of that is from real estate holdings, including both Balmoral Castle and Sandringham House. In addition, the queen is said to be in possession of a very valuable stamp collection, expensive jewelry and maybe even some good old-fashioned blue-chip stocks in her portfolio. Although it cannot be counted among her possessions, the queen also holds in trust an impressive collection of artwork that is thought to be worth between $10/£7.5 billion and $13/£10 billion.

2. Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh

Although the Queen’s husband isn’t quite as flush as she, he probably doesn’t have to worry about finding himself in line at the local soup kitchen anytime soon. Prince Phillip is thought to be worth somewhere in the vicinity of $39/£30 million. In addition to that, he also received an annual salary in exchange for carrying out his duties that amount to $460,000/£350,000. Whether or not he is still entitled to that benefit is unclear since he did retire from his public duties during the summer of 2017 at the age of 96, and who could blame him?

3. Prince Charles

Prince Charles has a very generous estate to thank for his estimated $1.3/£1 billion net worth, although there is an expiration date attached to the deal that allows him to profit from what is known as the Duchy of Cornwall. Unfortunately for Charles, the estate was established to provide income for the crown prince and when Charles someday moves on to serve as king, the benefits of the estate will be passed along to William, who will someday serve as Prince of Wales.

4. Prince William, Duke of Cambridge

With an estimated net worth of $40/£30 million at the age of 35, Prince William has a lot to be thankful for. William’s fortune comes, in part, from the inheritance left for him by his mother, Princess Diana. He also enjoys the benefits of a trust that was established by his great-grandmother, whose daughter is the reigning queen. William also receives a salary from his father as part of his duties as a member of the royal family.

5. . Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall

Marrying a prince surely has it’s financial benefits, but Camilla was far from destitute when she married Prince Charles in 2005. Prior to her induction into the royal family, she owned a home that was estimated to be worth around $2.5/£1.9 million. As the Duchess of Cornwall, she receives benefits from the Duchy of Cornwall estate in exchange for her royal duties like Prince Charles does. Her estimated net worth is said to be in the vicinity of $5/£3.8 million.

6. Prince Harry

As far as wealth goes, William is pretty much neck-and-neck with his older brother with about $40/£30 million. A significant portion of that wealth came from the $16/£12 million he inherited from his mother, Princess Diana, at the time of her death in 1997. Other sources of income include money he was given by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, in addition to what he receives from his father in return for carrying out his royal duties.

7. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge

The glamorous Duchess of Cambridge is thought to have about $10/£7.5 million, and a generous portion of that is probably from her share of her family’s party-planning business. The British economy likely generates more wealth using her image than she personally owns, however. It is estimated she is indirectly responsible for billions of dollars that result from the sales of merchandise that can be associated with her. For example, just one public photo of Kate wearing a particular dress can easily result in a frenzy that ends with that particular dress being sold out in countries all over the world.

8. Prince Andrew, Duke of York

Although information on Prince Andrew is a bit dated, it’s still interesting to note that a 2012 estimate places his net worth at around $75/£57 million. Like many other members of the royal family, a good portion of his wealth is the result of a trust that was established for him when he was growing up. His royal salary consists of $408,000/£310,000 he receives annually from the queen, and he also benefits from a Royal Navy pension which is likely to be far less impressive than his other sources of income.

9. Princess Charlotte

Although she may look like a typical, cute 4-year-old, Charlotte’s wealth is estimated to be well above many of her royal relatives. Due to her value to the British fashion industry, her worth is estimated at a whopping $3.85/£3 billion. That would certainly buy a lot of Barbie dolls and lollipops, but like most kids, Charlotte will have to wait for adulthood before she can decide how she wants to spend her share of the royal fortune.

10. Princess Diana

Although Diana has been gone for more than twenty years, she is still near and dear to the hearts of millions of fans all around the world. Just prior to her death in 1997, she was thought to be worth approximately $22.5/£17 million due to the settlement she received following her divorce from Prince Charles. That money, along with the value of other personal belongings like jewelry, was passed on to her sons Prince William and Prince Harry who each received their inheritance on their 30th birthday.
