It actually happened yesterday evening. So much bad news that are unreported is happening in alaigbo, expecially Anambra state, Nnewi south LGA in particular. I'm from the area, last week Saturday, gun men invaded Ezinifite town, my own place (which is a neighboring town to Osumenyi) and killed 3 men and abducted 1 man.
These things have gone beyond ipob, umuoma boys and ebube agu. We should all join hands together and nip this monster in the bud before it gets out of hand.

The truth is that it won't be easy. I have been trying to become a programmer for long now. And I have had my fair share of troubles. But I am still grinding. What you need now is a side[b] hustle[/b] to keep food on your table or a very understanding and dependable family that is ready to support you. The next step is finding what you really love. Is it web development or android app development or working with OS or networking or data analytics or Design(UX/UI). The list is endless but the truth is with time data analytics is going to rule the world because one can read a person by just taking time to study certain data about that particular person or one can even make almost accurate predictions about the future with just data at hand. For me it is not about passion but about the money and survival. IT support is another good one because you could easily get hired to provide remote support. The world has gone digital and many companies will rely on technology to run their businesses so there will be a high demand for IT support specialist every now and then.

Lastly you need a structured learning platform to pick up skills you wish to learn. I use coursera.org and Udacity. Udacity is giving out scholarship presently to Nigerians(I may post the scholarship link here if you are interested you could apply and begin your learning journey)



Remember that you could sell your present skill set online so don't throw it away so fast.

I’ve been trying really hard to navigate the Nigerian tech space for about a year now and it’s been hard, Lol. The current education system doesn’t teach anything about becoming a programmer. A couple of departments; computer science and computer engineering, teach one or two programming languages, and that’s it. So for the average Nigerian getting into tech, it’s all stabbing the air in the dark and praying you hit gold. Or at least it was for me. Till of course I turned on the light. Pretty basic yeah, that’s what I should have done in the beginning, but you’re probably like me and you don’t know yet. So here are six things you should not do when you’re starting out in tech.


Don’t Wait for passion.
Passion drives a lot of people and industries and while it’s a great thing to have in your corner, there’s really nothing passionate about writing tags or numbers on your editors or pulling images and containers from done, it’s not interesting or fun-filled. It’s boring and are guaranteed to fall asleep when watching you tube videos and taking courses especially if you’re self taught.
I’m not disputing the fact that some people might have passion for this, but a better drive would be passion for being rich, or being employed or let’s say a willing ness to get the job done. Even a sense of responsibility is a better drive than waiting for passion or inspiration. It might never come and what do you do then, give up?

Don’t underestimate having a plan
You need a plan, you need to know where you’re going, what you’re trying to become. As beautiful as it is to be a jack of all trade, you might waste valuable time acquiring skills you do not need without a plan. Not all programming languages are needed for a back end developer and same way not all are needed for front end development or UI/UX. While it’s great and beneficial to understand one or two in every field, you would save a lot of strength when you specialise.

Going without a mentor
One sure way to avoid missing your target or burning out quickly from exhaustion is to have a mentor. Once you narrow down the area you want to specialise, look out for a mentor. You can start by could emailing some popular ones you know or just plain shooting your shots in the DMs on Twitter.
Joining an Organisation like She Code Africa(SCA), Utiva, Stutern, Developer Student Club(DSC). Is an easy way to get a mentor and also a sense of belonging in the community, this is so helpful and would give you the push when you need one.

Don’t wait till you have money
A wise man once said, “check YouTube”. A lot of academies online now teach professional courses on that tech career you want to pursue on YouTube you could be saving your coins by looking for free stuff. Be strategic. Take that one month free Python class or beginner web dev webinar, get the outline or an idea on the next step them check for free courses online. There are tons and tons of them. Save your coins!!

Do: Check for other areas in tech.
Tech is wide, very wide. There’s so many avenues to build a career in tech,
Cloud engineering, Software testing, Dev ops, just so many, if you’re coding and it’s giving you a hard time check out other areas you need little coding knowledge. Product management and designs are areas you can specialize on with little coding skills. Check out Univelcity for these.



Do: Consistency
This is so important. Code every day. Practice every day. 1 hour daily is better than seven hours a day once a week. You would have forgotten everything you learnt the previous week. There’s a high risk of burning out. Set weekly goals, daily goals and meet up, you’ll love it.

If you are been employed as a receptionist or secretary please will you work on commission? He have marketers, and he will tell you he have not employed you as a marketer. Why then will he give you such conditions after using you?

Ola what he gives at the end of the month is not what one will call salary at all. Can you receive #7,200 as a two months salary instead of 100 or 60k? Judging from his verbal probation salary or 'letter' salary.

I'm writing this note of warning with pain in my heart. Please fellow job seekers be wise. There's this man that publishes advert on the newspaper virtual every month with 'kingdomfresh..........com' as the email address. Office situated at suite 7 and 8 1st floor yemosa plaza 26 Akowonjo road Egbeda, Lagos. He is a thief in the making, he goes by the name Mr. Daniel Morgan Ago, lanky in looks from Delta state and his organization is 'Royal Channel oil and gas Nigeria limited'. Always employing females for the post of Receptionist and Secretary. Once the interview is through here are things to expect :
1. You both will reach a comprise on salary
2. He will invite you for a day training in his office
3. You will find out you are up to 10 gunning for 1 position, all of you will be present for the interview.
4. He will give you lectures and ask you questions after which he will conclude you know nothing and will place you on a 50k probation salary (oil money).
5. He will give you the dress code and colour then resumption date. (Skelewe dance.... I don get job praises).
6. Work starts without a letter. List of customers to call and convince to buy petroleum products from the organization.
7. Few days down the line you will know you are a renowned marketer without a letter of offer.
8. If he gives you money to go meet a client he will write it down and get you to sign. (If you don't sell anything you will pay back the money).
9. He will use you for 2wks before letting you know he don't give letter to his staffs. If your set worry for one he will frustrate you guys and before you know it, some will start dropping. The last man standing will 'get the letter'
10. Letter will be given to the last man standing.... From 50k down to 30k with conditions of no two sales a month no salary.
11. If you tarry till the end of the month, that's when his 'money giving record' will surface. Those days you went out without positive results, the T.fare will be deducted.
