Politics / Government Loses N300b To National Theatre Decay By Anote Aj by holtby09(m): 8:00am On Nov 14, 2017
Culture edifice in darkness over N20 m electricity debt
For the most part of 30 years in which Nigeria’ s foremost culture edifice , National Theatre , has been in comatose , government has lost over N300 billion .
The 5 , 000 - capacity main bowl has not been put to use since 1992 due to structural errors . The other halls run skeletal services at best , with most of them as non - cultural or artistic events . Organisers of artistic events have since shifted to other well- maintained venues .
The government has continued to incur overhead costs in terms of salaries of staff of both the National Troupe of Nigeria and the National Theatre . “ A source close to the operations at the facility put the overhead expenses on the National Theatre within the last one year (although not regular ) at N18 million monthly , and N4 million for National Troupe of Nigeria. This has , however, stopped to be regular in the last two years , but whenever it comes , the two establishments get that much ,” the source disclosed .
In spite of the monthly allocations and monies collected from the few event organisers and patrons , the edifice has been in total darkness for most part of 2017. It is currently experiencing a blackout because it owes N20 million electricity supply debts .
Notable filmmaker , Chief Eddie Ugbomah , has accused managers of the theatre of incompetence for running down the prime venue where he screened his celluloid films alongside Chief Herbert Ogunde and Dr . Ola Balogun in the 1980s and early 1990 s .
The main bowl, Ugbomah disclosed, has lost close to N90 billion in about 30 years while the other halls also lost another N200 billion in 18 years . He based his estimates on what he and the late Yoruba film doyen , Ogunde , and Balogun , used to rake in at most weekends for showing their celluloid films . He said while Ogunde , whose Yoruba language films were very popular , made about N5 million most weekends, he ( Ugbomah ) made about N3 million with his English films like The Death of a Black President , Oyenusi and Black Gold .
Ugbomah noted that the theatre has more halls than any event centre in the country and if well managed , revenues from them could be used to sustain it with reserves sent to government ’s coffers .
“ There is the exhibition hall , two cinema halls, the banquet hall , the VIP hall , and the 5, 000 -seater main bowl, ” Ugbomah said . “No other venue in Nigeria has this capacity . The main bowl also has a revolving stage , which is rare to come by in most event centres , and this stage has not been used in the past 30 years . Imagine how much money government would be making if 5, 000 people pay at least N500 to watch a film or play that would be shown thrice or four times a day ?”
Another filmmaker and first president of National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP ) , Mr . Mahmoud Ali -Balogun ( producer of Tangle with Me ) , spoke in agreement with Ugbomah , but said the financial loss at the National Theatre was unquantifiable given the resurgence in the cinema- going tradition in the past few years in the country .
Mo Abudu’ s The Wedding Party grossed N200 million in just 16 days of four weekends in box office earnings in cinema halls that seat only 100 people at a time . Also, AY ’ s (Ayo Makun ) A Trip to Jamaica earned N 168 million in less than four weekends. The two cinema halls at the National Theatre seat well over 500 people each at the same time , the exhibition hall well over 800 people .
Ali -Balogun spoke further : “Earnings from cinemas are just one aspect of what can be done with the National Theatre . If you look at what is being done at Terra Kulture , FilmOne House, Silverbird Galleria, and Genesis in terms of raising revenues , I will say National Theatre ’ s loss is too much , too unquantifiable , and it ’s a shame . The National Theatre is like a cultural headquarters . It is a place where you can have exhibitions like fine arts , film shows like cinemas, plays performed and corporate AGMs . Do you know the kind of affinity artists have for that place ? But it ’s being left fallow right now. It’ s just unfortunate. I believe that things have to change . What is responsible for this I don ’t know , but I know government is making efforts to make it work. ”
Ali -Balogun who said he was not pointing fingers , insisted that something was wrong somewhere : “Why are our national monuments so cursed in terms of functionality ? Look at the National Stadiums in Lagos and Abuja , It’ s unfortunate. I can ’t put a finger to what the exact losses are , but it is huge . It’ s not just revenue loss , but employment . When the place is functioning , it ’ s not just the ministry people I ’ m talking about . I’ m talking about all categories of artists , who should be working there; it was our workplace in those days .”
The General Manager of Terra Kulture , Mr . Joseph Umoibom , noted a lot of cultural events like the All Africa Music Awards ( AFRIMA ) , held last Sunday , could have been staged at the theatre but for its poor management. Eko Hotel hosted AFRIMA instead . Terra Kulture Arena Theatre , which opened as an interventionist theatre space last year, was largely in response to the National Theatre ’s continuing failing as Nigeria’ s cultural hotspot .
“ Eko Hotel charges N8million to N10 million a day , ” Umoibom noted . “ Even if National Theatre is a little cheaper , it can ’ t charge less than N5 million per day . In other words, the National Theatre can ’ t make less than N20 million on a weekend . A lot of other earnings can be made on the sides from food vending around the theatre and the car park. So, you really can ’ t quantify what is being lost at the theatre . People are being paid for doing nothing in that place , when they are sitting on money .”

Politics / HAPPY BIRTHDAY, His Excellency Alh. Yahaya Bello, Kogi State Governor by holtby09(m): 8:27am On Jun 18, 2016
“It is not the critics who count, Not the Man who points out how the strong man stumbles. In real life, honour, reward and recognition belongs to the man whose face is marred by sweet and dust. The man who constantly strives and toil to better the lots of his fellow mankind is really man of honour and destiny and not the Critic’’ – NELSON MANDELA
Roll out the red carpet, let the drums and cannon roar, bring in the Laurels and golden accolades. Click the crystal glass, in obvious well deserved celebration and honour of Alhaji Yahaya Adoza Bello, a rising star, a man of destiny and by the exceeding and amazing grace of God Almighty the 4th democratically elected Executive Governor of Kogi State who turned 41 years today.
Who is this quintessential star, a man of uncommon destiny, what is is pedigree and traits of his early childhood? Born on 18th June, 1975 in Agasa Okene Local Government Area of Kogi State to a humble but enterprising family of Alhaji Bello Ipemida Ochi and Hajiya Bello Oziohu in the the ancient metropolitan city of Okene. The lad Bello as a child prodigy started out early in life consciously choosing the noble path of diligence, hardworking and resolute determination to succeed in life. As a schoolboy in his quest for knowledge, young Bello showed and manifested early traits and signs of sharp intellect and proven leadership qualities, when as a toddler pupil in primary (2) he was made the class Monitor, he held the position of a class monitor until he was appointed the school head boy in class six; apparently because of his manifest leadership qualities.
After the completion of primary school education in 1989, young Bello enrolled for a collage at Agasa Community Secondary School Anyava Okene. His quest for qualitative education saw him changing schools until he finally settled for Government Secondary Suleja in Niger State where he came out In flying colours in his Senior Secondary Certificate Exams in 1994.
As a young man with a burning heat for higher education, he enrolled for his A Level Exams at the Kaduna Polytechnic in 1995 and 1996 he proceeded to the Prestigious Ahmadu Bello University to study Accounting. He graduated in 1999. Still not resting on his oars, he went back to Ahmadu Bello University Zaria and obtained a Master degree in Business Administration in 2004. With his masters degree, the ambitious and forward looking young Bello also enrolled for a professional certificate with the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria at Jos to become a Chattered fellow of ANAN.
Bello’s working career started in 2001 when he was posted to the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission for his mandatory National Youth Service. While serving there as a corps member, he distinguished himself exceptionally hardworking, resourceful and dedicated. His workaholic traits and commitment to duty earned him an uncommon favour and was offered appointment in the same place he did his primary assignment as Revenue Officer II. Apparently because of his dexterity and dedication to duty, he was singled out for promotion to the rank of Accountant within a short period. Again because of his competence and glaring potentials, he was later transferred to Makurdi Zonal Office to the Account Department. He rose steadily to the position of Assistant Chief Accountant until he voluntarily resigned his appointment to harness his potentials and professional skills in the uncertain terrain of the private sector. Through sheer and prudent husbandry of his hard earned resources, young Bello invested in Stock Trading Business and luck smiled at him with a financial break through shortly before the crash in the stock market business.
Apart from his passion and drive for Business, Bello has a moral burden for the poor and the less privileged. He is a highly committed public spirited philanthropist and currently funds three orphanage homes, in addition to his sponsorship of the education of hundreds of Kogi State undergraduates in various institutions of higher learning.
He came second pooling the second highest vote after late Prince Abubakar Audu. Following the sudden death of Prince Abubakar Audu fate and destiny brought in the young Yahaya Bello as the 4th democratically elected Governor of Kogi State. The story of the emergence of Bello, a multi talented young man in the prime of his youth as the governor of Kogi State is an eloquent testimony of a man entrusted by destiny and the unmistaken hand of God to salvage his people and generation at a critical and agonizing moment of the people’s quest for development and true happiness.

Politics / Anyaoku Proposes Reduction Of Nigeria’s 36 States Into 6 Units by holtby09(m): 5:36am On Feb 03, 2016
Conversion of thirty-six states in Nigeria to six federating units will make thrive and get a better result.
The Former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku who called the National Assembly to convert the existing six-geo political zones into federating units said the present thirty-six states were not viable.
With the new proposal, the present thirty-six states would serve as development zones.
Chief Anyaoku made the call at the Inaugural Conference organised by Ibadan School of Government and Public Policy, ISGPP held at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan.
The Former Commonwealth Secretary said there were landmark developments during the early years of Independence when Nigeria practised a true federalism with four regions as federating units.
According to the Elder stateman, the periods of the regional government were the days of significant exports of groundnut from the Northern Region, cocoa from the Western Region, rubber from the Mid-West and palm produce from Eastern Region.
The Chairman of the occasion and former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo who decried the high rate of corruption in the country enjoined the National Assembly to open its budget for public scrutiny.
He called on the Federal Government to address the problem of unemployment while on-going efforts must be intensified to enhance the security of lives and property.
A guest speaker and a Professor of International History and Politics from USA Richard Joseph wondered why Nigeria blessed with the best of human and material resources was still underdeveloped.
The Chairman, Board of Governors, ISGPP, Professor Akin Mabogunje said part of the programmes of the school was to identify and proffer solutions to missing gaps in governance and public policies.

Politics / Kogi Workers Suspend Strike, As Gov Signs Pact With Labour Leaders by holtby09(m): 11:35pm On Feb 02, 2016
The public workers in Kogi state on Tuesday suspended their six weeks old strike following the intervention of the new state governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello.
The governor also pledged to ensure that workers in the employ of the state government are paid latest by 25 of every month.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the labour unions in the state led by the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Onuh Edoka, had met with the governor on Sunday to resolve the impasse between government and the workers.
Following the resolutions at the meeting in which Bello promised to pay one month salary, the workers on Tuesday held a meeting of the leaders of the leadership of the labour unions where it was agreed that the workers should resume work today.
The NLC chairman however said at the end of the meeting with Bello that workers and government had signed agreement on the resolution of the crisis and the workers are exlected back at their duty posts on Wednesday (today).
He said, “It has not been too easy for the workers of the state, we had series of meetings with the outgone government but we were unable to reach a compromise because most of the demands of workers were not yielded to until the new governor came in and had a discussion with us.
“At our meeting on January 27, 2016, we were able to arrive at a far reaching decision and he appealed and pleaded with us to see reason why we should suspend the strike on the immediate things he would provide for the workers on the terms of agreement for which we entered into and had a resolution with him and those that cannot be done immediately comiittees would be put in place to look into them
“We had meeting with the leadership of the NLC, TUC and Joint Negotiating Council and at the end of the day we have been able to agree to the request of the governor on the ground that one months salary will be paid to workers, while as the bailout comes, it wil be used to liquidation the indebtedness of government to workers, we have also agreed that since this is a new government, we need to allow it to settle down and stabilise while all other demands of workers will be looked into”.
Addressing the workers, Bello expressed regret that government was unable to pay its workers that had diligently performed their duties.
He however pledged to vigorously pursue the bailout funds that were due to the state to enable government clear the entire arrears of salaries of state and local government workers and primary school teachers across the state.

Politics / 5 Things That The President Of Nigeria Can Do To Get His Country Back On Track by holtby09(m): 9:21am On Nov 05, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari, who was inaugurated May 29, is the antithesis of the stereotypical Nigerian politician: incorruptible, soft-spoken, self-effacing and deliberate. He embraces the nickname “Baba Go-Slow and Steady.” Buhari’s unhurried style has its downsides, however: It took him an unprecedented four months to name a solid but unextraordinary cabinet. His reform agenda appears to be sauntering out of the gates, according to the civil society-run Buharimeter.

In the meantime, the challenges facing Africa’s most populous nation and largest economy continue to grow: Oil revenues are down, currency value has slipped and Boko Haram has killed more than 1,700 since June. Nigerians nevertheless expect their new president’s reform agenda to show tangible results, and soon. Given these imperatives, here are five things Buhari can do to get the ball rolling:

1. Carefully clean house
Buhari’s reform agenda probably faces its greatest threat from corrupt, old-school politicians within his own All Progressives Congress (APC) party. Buhari should neutralise some of the APC’s shadiest figures, who could emerge as “veto players,” as described in Carl LeVan’s recent book.
Examples of these kleptocrats are not hard to find. The U.S. Department of Justice has accused one sitting APC governor of helping former dictator Sani Abacha steal at least $458 million from state coffers. Likewise, both APC candidates in the upcoming Kogi and Bayelsa State governorship elections have been indicted by Nigeria’s anti-corruption agency.
Admittedly, housecleaning carries political risks for Buhari. After all, his victorious electoral coalition included powerful defectors from former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). If he unduly antagonises these establishment figures, they could derail his party’s newfound dominance by joining their former comrades in the opposition PDP.

2. Pare down the parastatals
Buhari has an opportunity to realise immediate savings by eliminating or merging some of Nigeria’s more than 500 federal parastatals and boards. Parastatals are government-operated companies or commercial agencies. Pundits allege that past presidents used parastatal appointments to cultivate national political allies and provincial cronies. These institutions, which range from the lucrative to the modest to the moribund, have long been a cornerstone of corruption in Nigeria — a complicated topic expertly explained by Daniel Jordan Smith.
Buhari may also want to disband some nice-to-have but non-essential parastatals in light of competing priorities and current fiscal constraints. Does Nigeria need to spend more than $4 million annually on a Centre for Space Transport and Propulsion? Is there an effort underway to rescue the supposedly stranded Nigerian astronaut featured in this legendary scam letter?

3. Tame the white elephants
Buhari’s apparent determination to revive two “white elephant” economic sectors — domestic oil refineries and steel mills — worry industry experts. Nigeria is replete with these kinds of investment projects where state-owned enterprises are funded for long periods even if they incur huge losses. For decades, Nigerian leaders have thrown good money after bad at these projects because, as Robinson and Torvik argue, white elephant projects yield short-term political gains.
Buhari, like any of the rest of us, could stumble into a sunk cost dilemma where his efforts to maximise future returns of Nigeria’s white elephants only increase their cumulative losses. Instead, he should address the graft, inconsistent policies and opaque privatisation deals that experts say turned these industries into white elephants in the first place.

4. Rein in subnational debt
As Buhari tries to put Nigeria’s public finances back in order, the balance sheets of the country’s 36 states are sinking deeper into the red. In a decentralised federal system like Nigeria’s, state budgets typically affect the lives of ordinary citizens more than federal spending does. Since taking office, Buhari has already bailed out 27 cash-strapped states to the tune of $2.1 billion. States’ borrowing trends are risky and need to be addressed, according to a recent report by the African Development Bank.
All but a few states generate minimal revenue outside of their monthly allocation of Nigeria’s anemic oil income. While Nigeria’s national debt is still relatively low by global standards, fiscal federalism means that if states default on their debts, the federal government foots the bill. Buhari’s reasons for watching state borrowing should also be personal: One of the stated reasons for the 1983 military coup that first brought him to power was runaway borrowing by state governors.

5. Legislate for the long run
Nigeria will need to feel the “Buhari Effect” (the sense, evident in a recent New York Times article, that there is a new sheriff in town) long after the president’s tenure is over. The best way for him to protect his legacy is to partner with the National Assembly to enact legislation enshrining key reforms. With few other politicians like him on the horizon, Buhari should put his legacy in writing.
A good place to start would be an act prohibiting the use of “security votes.” Both a definitive article by Uche et al. and a 2007 Human Rights Watch report illustrate how these secretive budgetary line items are used by officials at all levels of government as slush funds. Even Nigeria’s leading anti-corruption agency had a $1,000,000 security vote included in its 2014 budget. Buhari has his work cut out for him.

Business / 6 Stories Of Super Successes Who Overcame Failure by holtby09(m): 2:57pm On Oct 31, 2015
Failure is not the alternative to success. It’s something to be avoided, but it’s also only a temporary setback on a bigger, more significant course. Everybody encounters failure at one point or another . What truly matters is how you react to and learn from that failure.
Take the stories of these six entrepreneurs. Their stories end in massive success, but all of them are rooted in failure. They’re perfect examples of why failure should never stop you from following your vision.
1. Arianna Huffington got rejected by 36 publishers.
It’s hard to believe that one of the most recognizable names in online publications was once rejected by three dozen major publishers. Huffington’s second book, which she tried to publish long before she created the now ubiquitously recognizable Huffington Post empire, was rejected 36 times before it was eventually accepted for Even Huffington Post itself wasn’t a success right away. In fact, when it launched, there were dozens of highly negative reviews about its quality and its potential. Obviously, Huffington overcame those initial bouts of failure and has cemented her name as one of the most successful outlets on the web .

2. Bill Gates watched his first company crumble.
Bill Gates is now one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, but he didn’t earn his fortune in a straight line to success. Gates entered the entrepreneurial scene with a company called Traf-O-Data, which aimed to process and analyze the data from traffic tapes (think of it like an early version of big data).
He tried to sell the idea alongside his business partner, Paul Allen, but the product barely even worked. It was a complete disaster. However, the failure did not hold Gates back from exploring new opportunities, and a few years later, he created his first Microsoft product, and forged a new path to success.

3. George Steinbrenner bankrupted a team.
Before Steinbrenner made a name for himself when he acquired ownership of the New York Yankees, he owned a small basketball team called the Cleveland Pipers back in 1960. By 1962, as a result of Steinbrenner’s direction, the entire franchise went bankrupt.
That stretch of failure seemed to follow Steinbrenner when he took over the Yankees in the 1970s, as the team struggled with a number of setbacks and losses throughout the 1980s and 1990s. However, despite public fear and criticism of Steinbrenner’s controversial decisions, eventually he led the team to an amazing comeback, with six World Series entries between 1996 and 2003, and a record as one of the most profitable teams in Major League Baseball.

4. Walt Disney was told he lacked creativity.
One of the most creative geniuses of the 20th century was once fired from a newspaper because he was told he lacked creativity. Trying to persevere, Disney formed his first animation company, which was called Laugh-O-Gram Films. He raised $15,000 for the company but eventually was forced to close Laugh-O-Gram, following the close of an important distributor partner.
Desperate and out of money, Disney found his way to Hollywood and faced even more criticism and failure until finally, his first few classic films started to skyrocket in popularity.

5. Steve Jobs was booted from his own company.
Steve Jobs is an impressive entrepreneur because of his boundless innovations, but also because of his emphatic comeback from an almost irrecoverable failure. Jobs found success in his 20s when Apple became a massive empire, but when he was 30, Apple’s board of directors decided to fire him.
Undaunted by the failure, Jobs founded a new company, NeXT, which was eventually acquired by Apple. Once back at Apple, Jobs proved his capacity for greatness by reinventing the company’s image and taking the Apple brand to new heights.

6. Milton Hershey started three candy companies before Hershey's.
Everyone knows Hershey’s chocolate, but when Milton Hershey first started his candy production career, he was a nobody. After being fired from an apprenticeship with a printer, Hershey started three separate candy-related ventures, and was forced to watch all of them fail.
In one last attempt, Hershey founded the Lancaster Caramel Company, and started seeing enormous results. Believing in his vision for milk chocolate for the masses, he eventually founded the Hershey Company and became one of the most well-known names in the industry.

Draw inspiration from these stories the next time you experience failure, no matter the scale. In the moment, some failure might seem like the end of the road, but remember, there are countless successful men and women in the world today who are only enjoying success because they decided to push past the inevitable bleakness of failure.

Learn from your mistakes, reflect and accept the failure, but revisit your passion and keep pursuing your goals no matter what........HOLTBY™

Education / WAEC Releases 13 States’ Withheld Results by holtby09(m): 1:55am On Aug 14, 2015
The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has released results of more than 200,000 candidates which were withheld due to the indebtedness of their various states to the council. Affected candidates can now check their results at the council’s website.

Head of WAEC National Office, Nigeria, Mr Charles Eguridu, had at a press briefing in Abuja last Wednesday promised to release the withheld results within 24 hours following the intervention of the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, which promised to ensure governors of the 13 indebted states pay their debts.

The Head, Public Relations of the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, Nigeria, Mr. Ari Yusuf, told Vanguard, yesterday, that “the Chairman, NGF, Governor Abdulazeez Yari of Zamfara State, had promised to expedite action to recover the money and a promise made at that level is difficult to doubt. A serious meeting will be held with the affected state governors to get the debt paid and we are happy with the approach of the NGF.”

Also speaking with Vanguard, Executive Director, NGF, Alhaji Tayo Shittu, affirmed that the debts owed WAEC will be paid as soon as possible, adding that the national financial challenges do notorious permit the debtors to give a time frame.
He said: “Remember that these debts are for 2015 and we are just above half of the year. They are not outstanding debts. If I am owing you in 2015, it is understandable. If it was a backlog, we can shout and say, how come they have not paid. Everybody knows that there are economic challenges everywhere. We have given them every assurance that this money will be paid, but we cannot give a specific time.
“You will recall that Wednesday evening, WAEC, which had vowed to withhold indefinitely results of the 13 states owing the council, recanted the threat, saying the NGF had promised to hold a meeting with the affected states governors to recover the money.
The Head National Office, HNO, Nigeria WAEC has on Wednesday in Abuja during a press briefing said: “We have decided to listen to the appeals and review our earlier position.”
Eguridu, who maintained his earlier stand not to mention the council’s debtors said: “If I start to mention the names of states that are owing, I may not be fair to those that have paid and those making efforts to pay.”
He explained that since WAEC is not a profit-making organization and her creditors were on its neck, he had to cry out, adding: “In the present circumstance, the government is subsidizing examination fees of candidates in Nigeria.”

Career / Why Food, Sleep And Exercise Are Critical To Success by holtby09(m): 12:50am On Aug 14, 2015
How we care for our bodies affects our performance at work. Skipping your twice weekly workout because you believe you are strapped for time leads to negative habits that impact your overall happiness and productivity. Similarly, ordering fast food instead of cooking to save the hassle of buying groceries and preparing your own meals hurts more than it helps.
Here are three arguments that will convince you to pay more mind to the way you eat,
sleep and exercise.
1. Good food nourishes the body and powers a strong mind.
Did you know that certain foods make you smarter? For entrepreneurs, the best brain-healthy foods include beets, fish, berries, lean protein and walnuts. Eat these to improve your concentration, focus, memory and sharpness. Also, to sleep well, try things like MCT oil, krill oil or raw honey before bed.
Timing is critical too. Avoid letting your hunger dictate when you eat. Research suggests the best time to have breakfast is between 7 and 7:30 a.m., lunch between 12:30 and 1 p.m., and dinner between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Though sticking to a strict meals routine is unrealistic due to congested commutes and sporadic meetings, having rough guidelines for when meals happen provides structure for your diet and provides you enough fuel to conquer your day.
2. Working sleepless yields diminishing returns.
One of the most unhealthy habits professionals have today is bragging about
how little sleep they get. While it is admirable a person is willing to put their body and mind through a 48-hour work marathon, it is outright foolish.
Successful entrepreneurs like Arianna Huffington and Marc Andreessen make it a priority to get a full night’s rest. Workers who consistently burn the midnight oil burnout . Furthermore, overworked professionals tend to be less productive than their peers.
According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, the consequences of sleep deprivation are arguably disastrous to your health and work performance . “In the short term, a lack of adequate sleep can affect judgment, mood, ability to learn and retain information, and may increase the risk of serious accidents and injury. In the long term, chronic sleep deprivation may lead to a host of health problems including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and even early mortality.”
Often, workers running on fumes find themselves staring at a blank screen struggling to complete assignments, lashing out and acting irritably, or forgetting to do important tasks. The risks of sleeping less in order to sneak in another hour or two of work far outweigh the rewards, for which, there are few.
3. Exercise refreshes the mind as you exercise the body.
In a brief interview, business magnate Richard Branson suggested, “[exercise] keeps the brain functioning well and I definitely can achieve twice as much in a day by keeping fit.”
Daily workouts are a necessary ingredient to long-term success. In fact, President Barack Obama, Bill Gates and Mark Cuban all make a conscious effort to stay in shape.
For busy entrepreneurs, there are a number of ways to slowly transition into a consistent workout routine. First, remember that small changes can make a huge difference. Start by taking the stairs in lieu of escalators and elevators. Adopt a standing desk. Walk to work. You will quickly realize that these minor adjustments aid in reducing stress, building confidence and boosting your energy. Soon enough, you won’t dread going to the gym. At that point, you may even enjoy it!
