All praises and adoration to the almighty for making this a success.
many thanks to those whose transcripts were of great help to me and those who stood by me all through this from application to visa prep and all. Lolade, taheerah, abdulkareem, Alex only to mention few. May God bless you all.

Embassy : WC Lagos
School name: UNT
Funding : 32,718
Program admitted for: PhD chemistry
Visa status: approved

This man in window 11 was just denying people. He has denied about 4 people since I entered the hall. I was just quietly praying that the lady in front of me should go to him and I go to another window. But the lady went to another VO and I was asked to go to him after denying another person again.

VO: Where are you going to?

Me: I'm going to university of north Texas in Denton for my PhD in chemistry with concentration in organic chemistry.

VO:PhD?
Me:Yes

VO: What's by he difference between organic chemistry and inorganic chemistry

Me: Organic chemistry is the study of organic compound while inorganic chemistry is the study of other compd like metals and others( since I can't really remember the definition of inorganic chemistry due to tension)

Then the silence began
VO: Typing
Me: I was quietly saying won't this man ask my another question. Muteness lasted for about 30-40sec.

VO: Are you married
Me: No
VO: Do you have kids
Me: No.. but ( I wanted to tell him why I choose UNT cos I felt he hasn't asked me enough question but sth just tell me to keep quiet.

VO: I want to approve your visa, take this yellow paper to window 22 to pay your reciprocity fee.

Thanks.

Na just God grace oo.
Prepare well and pray well too.

Congratulations. There are atleast 2 Nigerian Ladies in UNT's PhD Chemistry. I can link you up with them. They are nice people. If you also need help with anything you can PM me. Go mean green!

Sure I can provide 2 or 3 different datasets on MOOCs and one is nearly 60,000 dataset.....not new but sufficiently good

Can you give me pointers to Datasets in the education domain? I am looking for datasets like students answers to homework/exam questions, preferably non multichoice questions. Also, datasets related to students collaboration in a school homework/project/exam. Basically, anything in the Education domain will be useful to me.

I’m just curious to know how you can do PhD in NLP, ML and DL together. If it’s MSc that could be understandable.

My PhD is in Computer science but my concentration is in AI specifically NLP, ML and DL. All 3 fields overlap a lot nowadays. It becomes more difficult to separate them as the days goes by.

Spent the past few days reading all emmanuelewumi's post (all 4140 of them) and his second monicker manie (all 2073 of them). It took me a while but it was worth it. Thanks for your contributions, Sir. I learned a lot from them. Maybe consider writing a book about investment in Nigeria at some point in your life.

Been wavering on whether I should make this post or not but I decided to, maybe I may get some help here or maybe it may be of help to someone here.

After I got my visa last month, I decided to tell my supervisor I had gotten the visa and then I went ahead to ask him if there was anything I could do to better prepare myself for work in his lab since I had two months left before my scheduled arrival date. See me where I am forming good student o grin I was probably hoping he will just tell me to brush up on certain concepts, or books, or maybe learn a programming language that was actively used in his lab that I didn't already know, or maybe he will just tell me to focus on my travel preparation tongue. After about a week he replied, attached about 10 research papers and told me to peruse them and give him feedback. Some of them were even peoples complete Ph.D. thesis shocked shocked. Boy! see work I have given myself cry. I could not even complain because na me find trouble. I cannot come across as unserious even before I arrive so I really can't put it off now. So I have been trying to read the papers and make sense out of them and it has been a whole lot of work and has been very time-consuming. But I just really have to, to enable me write a reply to his email that will show that I really did read the papers he sent. I don't know if there is a lesson here or if I did the right thing, but I just thought I should share.

sheke01:

I can relate with number 2. I took Amazon internship assessment back in February and all the technical questions could be found in Leetcode and HackerRank. Boy, na once I fail comot.

shayhune:
The day is drawing nearer. Commencement is approaching. It all still feels like yesterday when we were all preparing for the GRE, applying to schools, seeking funding, asking for mock interviews, reading through past interview transcripts and looking forward to a "better" life in the United States of America. I look back at this experience and all I can say is I'm grateful to God for the journey so far. It's not been all rosy living as an international student in this foreign land but every moment has been worth it. My experience here has been one of joy and regret. Joy because I keep relishing on the fact that I'm fortunate to be out of Nigeria. Regret because I wish I knew some information before migrating. In everything, I give thanks to God.

I'll just chip in some advice for tech folks(and anyone it applies to) coming or planning to come over,so you don't make same mistakes I made.
1. Whatever you learn in class is needful but challenge yourself to hone your software development skills because what really counts are your skills, not your 4.0 CGPA.
2. For the smart geeks, practice Leetcode and HackerRank questions starting from your first semester and get familiar with their problems and solutions if you really want to scale through the tough tech interviews and land a good job that will sponsor your work visa.

Been over a month you two made these posts, but I just wanted to say Thanks. I am taking your advice seriously. After I read your posts, I decided to start the practice by the beginning of June--after my visa interview. I had been planning to do so but had been procrastinating so your posts gingered me. I had to make a decision on Leetcode vs Hackerrank and I eventually decided to settle for Leetcode because I found the challenges on Hackerrank too verbose. I decided to do at least one problem a day starting from 1st of June, and so far so good, today is 16th of June and I checked my Leetcode account and I had successfully completed 16 problems. I am hoping to keep up the pace though I don't know how I can keep up when I resume school. Thanks once again.

On Travel

I was able to book a flight from Lagos to Dallas, Tx for about 385k on Jumia Travels. Same flight on Qatar airways website went for 460k. Anyone looking for flights should check them out, their service was really good. I have also heard good things about Expedia and Travelstart.

Goodluck to everyone.

calculator123:

what steps did you take to get those papers published?

Trying, failing and trying again. I put the papers together the best I could by reading other related papers and studying the format they used. Then I submitted both papers to one Top conference. At the time I submitted, I had no idea it was a Top conference, I may not have submitted it there if I did. They accepted one of the papers and rejected the other. But the best part of it was the helpful feedback I got from the reviewers. I made the corrections based on their feedback and took their criticisms wholeheartedly. I did this for a couple of iterations--Submitting the papers to conferences, then using the feedback I got to improve the paper, and after each iteration, the paper got a bit better. The papers were basically an extension of my final year project. At the end just know that no one expects you to single-handedly write a research paper that will be accepted to a Top journal at this stage (conferences are a bit easier to get into), especially if all you have is a Bachelor's degree. The bar is a bit higher if you have a Master's degree. They are just looking for some indication that you have the aptitude to cut it in grad school when you are given more training. So even if you end up not being able to publish, you can attach the paper when emailing professors along with your transcript, test scores, and CV. The experience will also give you something nice to talk about in your SOP.

What are the basic requirements to publish?

Original research. Basically coming up with a novel solution to solve a problem. Must not be a big problem, might just be a subset of a bigger problem. Even if the problem has been solved before, using a new methodology that is better in some aspect than other existing methodologies is also original research. Stay away from predatory journals. Good luck.

Yes Boss, I meant Ph.D. Thanks for replying me. I made 3.72 / 5 in a Federal University here in Nigeria. Is the conversion equivalent to what can me a direct Ph.D ?

A 3.72/5 would be above a 3/4 but less than 3.5/4. You should use the WES free iGPA calculator to check what your GPA evaluates to on a 4-point scale.

Boss, is direct application for Masters available in all schools or just available in the school you applied to? And is such direct application class of degree dependent?

I guess you meant to ask if direct Ph.D. application is available in all schools. Direct Ph.D. application is available in most schools in the United States. It is not class of degree dependent but GPA is a key factor. Schools will ask for a minimum of 3.0./4 and in many, it is actually a minimum of 3.5/4 for direct Ph.D. applications.

Visa approved today, Lagos Consulate. Fully funded, Ph.D in Computer science. UNT.

Was the very first person to arrive there. Not based in Lagos so I passed the night with my brother that stays at Ajah. He advised we leave early to beat the traffic so we left as early 3 a.m. despite my 7 a.m. appointment time and we got there around 4 a.m. Suffice to say, the stress of the previous days journey from Port Harcourt coupled with getting little sleep wore me out before the time for my scheduled appointment. 7 a.m finally came and we were ushered in. I was interviewed by an African American lady, probably the "notorious" one I hear about on this thread. Something funny happened before it got to my turn, the guy in front of me tried to run away from her. He tried to skip the line and move to the line adjacent to ours that had a middle aged white man as VO. The VO (middle aged white man) caught him, got up and went to report him to the African American lady and she asked that the guy be sent back to her. grin grin grin

It got to my turn.

VO: Good morning, Pass me your passport and I-20

Me: Passed it to her and her eyes went to the estimated costs part of the I-20, she glanced at the I-20 for about a minute and started typing

VO: So how did you find out about this school?

Me: I was looking for schools that had research labs in....(she cuts me off)

VO: So you found it online?

Me: Yes.

VO: what kind of research would you be working on?

Me: Educational Technologies for developing countries. Most of Today's breakthrough in Educational Technology were designed and built for developed countries with reliable and adequate power supply, stable internet connection and a very educated populace in mind. These advances in educational technology while very impressive are sometimes too expensive or not effective in developing countries that still face challenges of erratic power supply, slow and unreliable internet connections and lack of technical support. I am interested in researching ways in which education technology can be built to work effectively in developing countries by taking the challenges already existing technologies face in such countries into consideration and researching solutions that can surmount those challenges. The part in italics is the first paragraph of my SOP. I did NOT say it to her exactly like that but what I said was something similar. I didn't memorize it, I just said it the best I could.

She looked quite impressed

VO: So this schools does research in this area?

Me: yes, I would be working with professor X who already does some research in this area using Artificial Intelligence

VO: What would be your responsibilities as a research assistant?

Me: Write code for ongoing projects, simulation of software programs.....

VO: How many other schools did you apply to?

Me: 6

VO: Name them

Me: University of Saskatchewan, ETSU, BGSU, FSU, Stanford, Auburn University

VO: How many other American Universities accepted you?

Me: 3

VO: Name them

Me: Auburn, ETSU and BGSU

VO: What's your highest educational qualification?

Me: Bachelor's Degree

Vo; Have you traveled out of Nigeria before?

Me: No.

Vo: Do you have any relatives in the USA?

Me: No

VO: I will be approving your VISA, Pick up your passport at X location, bring your I-20 to the point of Entry...., We have a program in EducationUSA....Congratulations.

Congratulations. UNT seems like a great choice. Did you send official transcripts to UNT or upload them during your application?

I will appreciate a reply. Thanks.

I "uploaded". Not really "uploaded", If I remember correctly, I had to send it to them by email along with some other documentation. That is their procedure for international students. For domestic students, it is quite different. Also, have your original degree certificate handy, they will request for it during application.

With the story so far, nothing really significant...

Catelyn would not have gone south, and Tyrion would not have been kidnapped, but that doesn't change much. Ned would have still moved against Cercei and still lose his head. The North would have still rebelled and Tywin would still ravage the Riverlands via Gregor Clagane. Catelyn would have still died during Theon's sack of Winterfell, and Tyrion would still have done everything pre- and post- Battle of Blackwater bay. The Brotherhood would most likely still have occurred, although perhaps without Beric Dondarrion.

So basically, no major plot change. smiley But then, this is all based on the story so far; Season 8: Episodes 4, 5, & 6 are still to come, and completely shrouded in mystery.

D-&-D have been winging it since they ran out of ASOIAF material in late season 5 - that's the cause of the many plot holes you've been seeing since then. But they did receive pointers of how the story would end from GRRM himself, and there is no way will GRRM end this tale with Bran's arc this haphazard.

So get yourself a bottle of JW's White Walker, and prepare to be entertained next week.

Yah, I know there is probably more to Bran than we have seen. But so far it has been much ado about nothing. I really hope he will be of much more significance in the final three episodes.
TV/Movies / Re: Game Of Thrones Discussion (Beware Of Spoilers) by Javanian: 5:47pm On Apr 29, 2019
GMan650:

- The dagger would not have been in place hence Tyrion would not have been arrested by Cat which led to Ned being attacked by Jaime which led to War of the 5 kings. All these brought us to where we are

It was not Catelyn Stark arresting Tyrion or Jaime attacking Ned Stark that led to the war of five kings. It was Ned Stark saying Joffrey was not the rightful heir that led to the war of the five kings. Bran's storyline had nothing to do with it.

- Another angle is there would not have been a new 3ER after the former died and NK wouldn't have marked Bran so he wouldn't have crossed the Wall hence he would still be alive.

No way. The NK did not cross the wall because he marked Bran. He crossed the wall because he found a way to take down the wall and Bran had nothing to do with it. He had been moving towards the wall from s01e01 before Bran's fall and certainly long before he ever touched Bran.

QUICK QUESTION

As at S08e03 which we have just seen, If Bran Stark had died when Jaime Lannister pushed him in S01e01 would anything have turned out differently? Is there any significant part of the story so far that would have played out differently? Other than helping Sam figure out Jon's parentage what else would have been different?

Any takers?

Yeah, The Wire is old but trust me, it's a classic. The Wire set the pace and standard for TV series we know today. It starts off slow but pay attention to every scene and conversation very carefully, they make sense later. The writing and acting is totally superb but you have to pay attention to really get it.

Breaking Bad

Better Call Saul

The Wire

Please watch these 3 series with respect o smiley These 3 are easily the greatest TV series of all time, don't take my word for it, check the ratings. If you are gonna go with them, then you have to be very patient, they all start off kind of slow but it's totally worth it, so pay attention at the beginning even when it sounds boring.

Better Call Saul is a sequel of Breaking Bad so you have to see Breaking Bad first.

Narcos, while a good series, will look like a joke after seeing these three.
