However, we want to share some tactics you can use to make money from our China Store without necessarily spending your own capital. The products you see in our store have been analysed by our products research and procurement team (our Inner Circle) which is headed by Jerry Ihejirika. They are products that are either new, unique, innovative or hot in the international market, that will appeal to our local customers and that have the potentials of generating high-profit margins in our local market.

Let me ask you these two questions before we share the step-by-step methods of how you can make money from our China Store:

1. How many of your friends and family members deal or are interested in dealing on any of the products listed in our China Store?

2. How many people do you know that deal or are interested in dealing on any of the products listed in our China Store?

Here are the processes:

Step 1: Take your time and create a list of people who you think will be interested in buying some quantities of any of the items listed in our China Store. Write their names down and the products you think they might be interested in, and focus more on the big retailers and wholesalers. Some are them are actually looking for new, unique, innovative or hot products to buy but you wouldn't know until you approach them.

Step 2: Take a digital (photo or video) or real sample of the product to them and let them know you can help them source for the products from China. (You can contact us to know if any stock is available in our Nigeria Store and you purchase one piece as real sample.) Tell them the cost price of the products in China (we have listed our best prices in USD so just add your own little cents on top of it), tell them how much some people are retailing the products in our local market (you can check that out online or in the local market), tell them how new, unique or hot the products are (we do not list common or cold products in our China Store), tell them how they could make some good profits from the product as early sellers (some of our new products are yet to enter the local market or are known to just a very few local sellers), and then tell them to buy small quantities first to test market (we have a minimum order quantity on each product listed on the platform). Keep searching for other persons who might be interested in buying any of our products as the more people you have, the better your chances of making cool profits. However, focus more on importers, wholesalers and the big retailers, and the people who will trust you the most with their money are people who know you.

Step 3: If some persons agree or are interested in giving you money so you can help them procure some quantities of the products from China, just head over to our China Store and negotiate with us. We will inform you of the total cost based on the quantities you want to buy and the logistics fees. You can then relay the information to your customers and do serious business with us.

Let's say you are a new mini importer and you have your capital of N100,000 (around $270) ready, which hot in demand products are you going to buy? And when I say hot in demand products, I mean products that are not so common in the local market. Trust me, the big importers won't allow you have a high-profit margin on any product that's HOT in demand and COMMON. So, you need to source for something that's unique/new/innovative (stay ahead of the market), lightweight (to avoid high shipping cost) and very cheap (should not be more than $5/pc and negotiate well) in China. Trust me, there are a lot of such items!

This is one of the reasons why I said the products research part is the hardest part. There are small to big importers at Idumota, Tradefair Complex, Alaba International, Onitsha main market, etc, who no longer travel that often to China because of the dollar exchange rate. They have the cash and customer base and are willing to buy all your products (because your quantity is very small) and pay you cash if you do your products research well and if you want fast turnover. With their experience, they know products that could be hot in demand if they see one. You can also choose to retail your products yourself and make higher profits.

But then, I ask again, how are you going to discover those hot in demand products that are not common in the local market? How are you going to do your products research? I have answers for you: If you want to learn fast, look for a products research expert to learn from or a products research team to join that are targeting the local market. While learning, tap some newly discovered products from the research team - you are definitely allowed to do that, perform your due diligence on the products you just tapped, buy a few of them from China, sell them in the local market, make some good profits and continue learning on-the-go.

If you want to learn slowly, do most of your products research on Amazon and AliExpress. Get to discover some of the cheap and new / hot-selling products on those platforms that are not so common in the local market, that would appeal to local customers, and with the potentials of having high-profit margins in the local market. Then go to Alibaba or 1688 (not AliExpress or Amazon) and search for reliable manufacturers/suppliers of the products. Negotiate for the best price based on your quantity and quality guarantee, buy, ship to Nigeria, start creating some awareness and start looking for customers once the goods are shipped, then sell your goods once they arrive. Repeat the cycle and move from being a mini importer to a seasoned importer this 2018.

If you are thinking about starting your own mini importation business in 2018, and you have a very small capital, one advice I will give you is forget about the niche thing (Yes, I said it!) and focus on discovering hot-selling products with high-profit margins that would appeal to customers.

Once you have your capital ready, the three major things you should focus on are:

Your Products Research: I always tell a lot of mini importers that the profit doesn’t start from selling but from your product research. If you take your time to do your research, you will discover cheap and quality products with high-profit margins. For example, some choker necklaces were cheap to source from China and had high-profit margins 2 years ago, and girls loved it. Some fidget spinners (anti-stress toys) were cheap to source from China last year and had high-profit margins, and people loved it. You are already limited by your small capital so do not focus on a niche but on discovering cheap, quality and hot-selling products that would multiply your money fast. You can research for those products on Amazon, AliExpress and Jumia. You can also target some of the hot-selling “Ship from Abroad” or “Jumia Global” products on the Jumia website and beat the drop shipper of that product with a better price and faster delivery.

Your Purchasing Price: That a product is cheap and hot-selling doesn’t mean you should just accept any price you see on any Chinese website. Use Amazon and AliExpress express only for product research purposes. Whenever you have discovered and are ready to buy your hot-selling product, go to Alibaba or 1688 (use Google Chrome to translate the website to English). Their prices are usually 20-35% cheaper than what you will get on Amazon or AliExpress if you do your research and negotiation well. Do not accept any price you see on Alibaba or 1688 until after you have negotiated with the manufacturer/supplier on WeChat, WhatsApp or Skype. Negotiation is KEY.

Your Marketing and Sales Strategy: You don’t even need a website to sell some hot-selling products. Create a video about the product and promote the video on social media, or do some webinars and promote the product at the of your webinar, or warm your email list about the product, or promote the product on your social media accounts, or do some Facebook ads if you have extra cash, or list your products on online marketplaces and classified ad sites, or search for niche influencers who would give you a shout-out/talk about your product, or search for an unbranded video of your product and use it to promote your product, or look for any good retailer of your product within your State or location and supply your products to them, or do a combination of any.

You can make it BIG this year in your mini importation business.

How It Works

Once we receive your request, we will get in touch with you within 24 hours to verify your request and ask for other necessary information to fully understand your request.

Step 2: Product Request Confirmation – We will notify you within 24 hours if your product purchasing request is rejected or accepted. If your request is accepted, we will send you our bank account details to pay for your product research fee. The product research fee will enable us to help you search for reliable manufacturers/suppliers of your product and to negotiate with them based on your product description, product specifications, estimated quantity demanded and other factors. You can pay the product research fee in Naira or USD. Once your payment is confirmed, then our research and negotiations will begin.

Step 3: Detailed Feedback – We will give you a detailed feedback within 5 working days. The feedback will include the summary and key points of our negotiations, cost of the product (in USD) based on your estimated quantity demanded and other necessary information. We will still be open to more negotiations with you and with the suppliers/manufacturers.

P.S. You can inform us to purchase a real sample if you want to confirm the quality and packaging of the product before booking your main order. You will be responsible for the sample cost and shipping expemses.

Step 4: Confirmation and Procurement – Once we receive your final confirmation for the order and payments (total cost of goods + money transfer charge), we will quickly pay the manufacturer/supplier to produce and package your item(s). Please note that filling our online payment notification form would enable us to quickly verify and process your payment within 3 working days. Failure to fill the payment notification form will result to delay in processing your payment. We will notify you via email or WhatsApp once payment is done.

Step 5: Shipping and Delivery – Once your goods are ready, they will be delivered to your shipping agent in China. You would need to contact your shipping agent for the receipt of your goods. Have a little issue here. I wasn't able to get an aliexpress agent to help me buy, so i managed to get the contact of a shipping agent who introduced me to their Chinese agent who does pick up for clients from sellers on 1688. I've made my order on their site and waiting to pay. But my challenge here is that there's no form of escrow to fall back on. I can't ascertain the weight of my goods myself so i would rely on whatever they tell me. I also cannot tell when i would have delivery of my goods because i would pay completely and wait for God knows when to have them. Does anyone have a solution to proffer here?

Things are cheaper on Alibaba and 1688 than on AliExpress because AliExpress was built for retailing or drop shipping purposes. If you want to buy at least 20pcs of an item, go and look for a manufacturer/supplier of the item on Alibaba or 1688. The main secret in getting good price is to negotiate with several manufacturers/suppliers via WhatsApp, WeChat or Skype. I have always gotten a reduced price via negotiations and it helps build relationship with the manufacturer/supplier. I also do help some clients in Nigeria buy cheaper and quality items on Alibaba and on 1688.
