UEFA Champions League-Real Madrid host Manchester City as Group D of the UEFA Champions League kicks off in stunning style on Tuesday.

Champions League
UEFA Champions League Group D preview

The champions of Spain and England meet at the Santiago Bernabeu in the most-anticipated match of the group stages, with City desperate to improve on last season’s showing in the competition.

Roberto Mancini’s men failed to make it out of a difficult group – which contained Napoli, Villarreal and eventual finalists Bayern Munich – despite winning 10 points from their six matches last term.

And progression will be even tougher this year for the Etihad Stadium outfit, with the group also including Borussia Dortmund (champions of Germany) and Ajax Amsterdam (champions of Holland).

It has every right to be called the ‘Group of Death’ and not one match will be easy for any side, something City midfielder James Milner is well aware of.

“To get the group of champions is obviously a bit unlucky,” Milner said.

“But you play in the Champions League to play against these top teams. And we know we can beat anyone on our day. It will be a very tough group but it’s down to us to play well.”

The former Leeds United and Aston Villa man said his side were ‘unlucky’ last season but they had learnt from their experience.

The true test of that will come in Madrid on Tuesday, with Jose Mourinho’s men sure to come out breathing fire after a lacklustre start to La Liga so far.

Whereas City are unbeaten and sitting fourth in the English Premier League, Real Madrid have won just once and sit 14th domestically, with reports continuing to circle about the future of Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo’s admission that he was ‘sad’ for professional reasons in the wake of Real’s 3-0 La Liga win over Granada has filled plenty of column inches and Mourinho needs to make his main man happy if Real are to stay in touch with table-toppers Barcelona, who are already eight points clear.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Chelsea News : Brazil's Oscar Signs For Chelsea by joeyfemous: 2:27pm On Jul 20, 2012
At the beginning of this month there cannot have been many football fans in England familiar with Oscar dos Santos Emboaba Júnior. Chelsea have provided roughly 25 million reasons for that to have changed but the message from Oscar's Brazil Olympic colleagues is clear. The Premier League and the Chelsea support, in particular, can be very, very excited. When the transfer from Internacional is officially signed off, the London club will welcome a precocious talent.

"Chelsea's fans can expect a very intelligent player," Menezes says. "He is somebody that is able to read the game and solve any problems that arise for his team. He does not rush and dribble with the ball at this feet but he finds good things to do with the ball."

"The thing about Oscar," adds the Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil defender Thiago Silva, "is that he is a very calm guy, always with a smile on his face and never complaining about anything. He is the same on the pitch. He doesn't call much attention to himself, he is discreet but he is always very smart and intelligent."

The public on these shores is poised for its first glimpse of what the fuss is about. Oscar is part of an almost surreally gifted Brazil squad that is here with one thing in mind: to take home Olympic gold. It is a curiosity that Brazil, five times world champions, have never won the Olympic football tournament and it is something they fully intend to put right.

The household names trip off his squad sheet, beginning with Neymar, Brazil's biggest star, who will play in Menezes' front three with Hulk and Leandro Damiao. Hulk is one of the three overage players; the others are Thiago Silva and Marcelo. Premier League fans will recognise Rafael and Tottenham Hotspur's Sandro. Pato, Ganso and Lucas Moura, the Manchester United target, are expected to be no more than substitutes.

"We are under huge pressure," Thiago Silva says, and Oscar, who will be charged with pulling the strings behind the forwards, might feel the burden more than most. In many respects the Brazilian public beyond Porto Alegre, where Inter are from, are only just waking up to Oscar. His profile is not enormous – it is dwarfed by that of Neymar, for example – as he has not made his name in Rio or Sao Paulo and his personality is not of the look-at-me variety. But Brazil will always have great expectations of its No10.

Oscar, though, is adept at taking things in his stride. This is a 20-year-old who has lived almost all of his professional life amid an extraordinary conflict, which saw him sue his first club, São Paulo, and endure two enforced breaks from the game. Oscar is a young man with admirable focus; lesser characters might not have made it to the other side.

Talk to Brazilians about the ownership battle that has coloured Oscar's story and they say that, if it is not entirely normal, then it is not unusual. But to English ears it confirms the perception of there being rather murky practices in south American football.

Oscar joined São Paulo at 13, where he made a name for himself in junior football before, briefly, forcing himself into the club's first team. But the problems started when, according to his agent Giuliano Bertolucci, São Paulo failed to pay the salary that they had promised. And so Oscar took them to court, before he walked out on them in December 2009.

In Brazil a player can become a free agent if he is not paid for three months and Oscar's representatives also argued that his contract was null and void as, in contravention of Fifa's rules, he had signed for more than three years when he was 16.

Oscar did not play until June 2010, when he joined Inter as a free agent but São Paulo continued to claim he belonged to them and they lodged legal appeals, which finally came to a head this year. The Brazil Sports Tribunal put a stop to Oscar playing for a period and he missed vital Copa Libertadores fixtures for Inter before, on 30 May, São Paulo announced that they had reached a settlement on his 'sale'. Oscar was cleared to play again.

There was a triumphal note about São Paulo's statement, which detailed a fee of 15m Reais (£4.75m), which represented a record between Brazilian clubs. But it is Inter who are laughing now, having found a way to pay São Paulo with the help of a third-party investor to turn round a massive profit with the Chelsea transfer. Inter's deal with São Paulo saw them take 50% of Oscar's rights, with the remainder being divvied up between Bertolucci, Oscar and the investor.

Oscar has much to look forward to in Chelsea blue yet it is tempting to speculate that the small things will feel golden, such as being paid on time and in full, and the knowledge that he will never be legally prevented from playing.

"Oscar has shown his strong character to get over various issues," Menezes says. "He is very mature and he has shown this with his determination to choose where he wanted to play. It shows how mature he is."

Oscar starred for Brazil at last year's Under-20 World Cup – he scored a hat-trick in the 3-2 victory over Portugal in the final – and, more recently, he has taken advantage of Ganso's injury problems to establish himself in Menezes' full international side. To date he has six caps.

Sports / 2013 Afcon Final Qualifing Round Draw by joeyfemous: 1:25pm On Jul 07, 2012
2013 Afcon participant are now ready to take on opponent, given the result of yesterday night draw in South Africa.

Heavyweight contenders Ivory Coast last Africa Cup of Nations finalist and Senegal have been drawn together in the final round of qualifying for the next Africa Cup of Nations.

”"

It means at least one more of the continent’s top contenders will miss out on next year’s tournament in South Africa, joining record winners Egypt on the sidelines.

The Ivorians host the first leg of the knockout clash in September and then travel to Dakar for the return in October.

The Ivorians did not concede a goal at the Afcon in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon earlier this year but still contrived to lose on post-match penalties in the Final against Zambia.

Senegal went to the 2012 tournament as the best performer in the preliminaries and were highly fancied, but despite a squad filled with European-based professionals they lost all three group games and suffered the embarrassment of being the first team eliminated.

Despite the setback, they were expected to provide another credible challenge in 2013 tournament but in order to do so must now get past the Ivorians.

2013 Afcon Final Qualifing Round Draw

Nigerians were left relieved on Thursday night when former captain Daniel Amokachi drew Liberia as the Super Eagles opponents for the 2013 Nations Cup final qualifier.
As the Nigeria assistant coach held out the little strip of paper that read ‘Liberia’, the collective exhale around Nigeria could have well have been enough to cause a tornado.

Even Amokachi could barely hide a wry, relieved smile when he looked at the name he had just drawn up.

It is an indication of Nigeria’s current brittle state of transition, that none in the country are willing to risk facing high value opposition on the road to South Africa 2013.

Liberia’s Lone Star are yet to win a single game against the Super Eagles after six attempts.

But Sylvanus Okpalla, one of Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi’s assistants, insists that there will be no room for over-confidence.

“I know people are relieved that we got Liberia, but I can assure you that they will be no walk-overs,” he said. “For them to be he, means they deserve to be here.

“These two games will be different from the last time we met. And we must play them with respect and treat them as equals.

“Our goal is to qualify for the Nations Cup, and everybody has to work hard and stay focused for us to do that.”

Thursday’s draw in Johannesburg also produced derbies between Sudan and Ethiopia, who both played at the first Nations Cup in 1957, and Algeria and Libya.

The qualifying ties will be played on the weekends of September 7-9 and October 12-14.

The 15 winners join hosts South Africa in the finals from Jan 19-Feb 10 next year.

Sports / Fernando Torres Revels In Euro 2012 Crown After 'complicated' Season by joeyfemous: 3:34pm On Jul 04, 2012
The 28-year-old struggled for form for both club and country in 2011-12, but was able to add the Euro title to FA Cup and Champions League triumphs.

On top of winning the Golden Boot award, Torres became the first player to score in two European Championship finals, and he did not hide his happiness to have had the chance to silence his critics.

"It was a complicated season for me," he told Guardian. "It does not mean it was bad, far from it, but it was complicated with very difficult moments for me.

"But to see my family happy after the final, you see whatever happened during the season was worth it.

"I will leave the poor memories behind and just remember the three titles, with this final against Italy so beautiful for the team, the whole country and everyone who follows Spain.

"After a year that was so tough, and during which we suffered so much, it made it all worth it.

"I am sure the Chelsea fans will also be happy. Now I have to rest and make sure I am ready for next season, which I am sure will be full of great moments. At least, I have to think like that."

Despite scoring three goals at the Euros, Torres had to settle for a place on the bench for three of La Roja's six matches, as he fell victim to Vicente del Bosque's preference for using Cesc Fabregas as a 'false nine'.

"I didn't have as many minutes on the pitch as I used to in previous tournaments, but these are the finals where I scored the most goals," he continued.

"Football throws up these things. Playing in a national team like this gives you the chance to make history. We have won two Euros now and I'm so happy and proud."

La Roja made history by becoming the first team to win three international competitions in a row, but Torres has warned that they may not stop there.

"There is a lot more left for this team to achieve," the Chelsea man added. "We have a lot of ambition and targets ahead of us.

"We will enjoy the celebrations, of course, but our heads are already turned to the Confederations Cup [in 2013] and the World Cup [in 2014]. I hope the majority of this squad can be there.

"It has not been easy. To win three consecutive major tournaments had never happened in the history of the game, so we have to value it. The numbers say this team is the best.

"But, luckily, we are not finished yet. Of course I want more. It is clear. When you win, you want more.

"And we are realistic. If you see the age of the team, and the people who maybe didn't have many minutes on the pitch, then you will see important people for the future.

"They are coming from outside [the team] and there is a lot more left in us for a while yet."

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Manchester United News: I Won't Wear Seven Shirt-kagawa by joeyfemous: 1:51pm On Jun 25, 2012
Manchester United News

Manchester United: Shinji Kagawa has turned down the chance to join a list of Manchester United legends by wearing the famous number seven shirt, with the Japanese international insisting he wants to make a name for himself rather than live off former glories.

Kagawa completed his switch, believed to be initially worth around £17.7 million, to Old Trafford over the weekend having completed a medical and obtained a UK work permit.

Michael Owen previously donned the number seven shirt, worn by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best and David Beckham, however it is now vacant following the Liverpool man’s release earlier this summer.

Kagawa wore the number 23 shirt while with Borussia Dortmund and he wears the number 10 for his country.
Manchester United News

“I've just joined the team and haven't accomplished anything yet,” said Kagawa of his decision. “I want to make a name for myself [at United] on my own terms.”

The Japanese international revealed that he turned down the number seven shirt for one with ‘personal meaning’. His new squad number has yet to be confirmed.

Kagawa went on to reveal that he has already been inspired by his first trip to Old Trafford to sign his four year contract.

'When I was at [Old Trafford], I thought about how incredible it would be if I could score there,' he said.

Sports / Euro 2012: Italy Advance, As England Exit Euro 2012 by joeyfemous: 1:30pm On Jun 25, 2012
Euro 2012 News

Euro 2012: England’s penalty curse struck again in Kiev Sunday as a far superior Italy advanced to the semi-finals of Euro 2012 with victory in a shoot-out after a tense quarter-final duel finished 0-0 following extra-time.

The Italians will face Germany in the semi-finals in Warsaw on Thursday after England’s campaign came to a bitterly familiar end with their sixth defeat in a penalty shoot-out in seven attempts since 1990.

Italy clinched a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win after Ashley Young sent his spot-kick against the bar and Italy captain Gianluigi Buffon saved from Ashley Cole to seal England’s fate.

The winning penalty was struck by substitute Alessandro Diamanti to leave England desolate once more at Kiev’s Olympic Stadium.

England had taken a 2-1 lead in the shoot-out after Riccardo Montolivo hit his spot-kick wide but Young ceded England’s advantage when he crashed his penalty off the bar.

Antonio Nocerino scored to restore Italy’s advantage and when Buffon saved from Cole, Diamanti stepped up to clinch victory.

The defeat extended England’s poor record of never having won a knockout game on foreign soil against a top-level football nation.

But England could have few complaints after being comprehensively outplayed over the 120 minutes of normal and extra-time, Italy with 35 attempts to England’s 9 while enjoying 64 percent of possession.

The tone for a surprisingly open first half had been set after only three minutes, when Daniele De Rossi rattled the woodwork with a thumping shot from 25 yards that had Joe Hart beaten.

England responded immediately and squandered a golden chance to take the lead when Glen Johnson’s effort was superbly saved by Buffon.

With their confidence lifted England enjoyed their best spell of the match and a curling Johnson cross saw Wayne Rooney’s diving header fly over with the Manchester United striker under pressure from Ignazio Abate.

But having soaked up the early English pressure, Italy soon got into their stride with man-of-the-match Andrea Pirlo springing England’s offside trap to send Mario Balotelli racing clear on 25 minutes.

The Manchester City striker took just a fraction too long, however, and John Terry was able to snuff out the danger with a fine cover tackle.

Italy finished the half the stronger of the two sides, Antonio Cassano testing Hart with a long-range effort which was parried wide.

Cassano then turned provider when he headed back across goal for Balotelli, only for Joleon Lescott to get a vital touch ahead of his City team-mate.

Italy’s dominance stretched into the second half, and England continued to live dangerously.

De Rossi wasted a golden chance to put his side ahead when he hooked wide after Claudio Marchisio headed Hart’s punched clearance into the box.

Hart then rescued England with a fine double double-save, parrying De Rossi’s long-range effort before blocking Balotelli’s follow-up. Montolivo shot over the bar but England breathed again.

Hodgson made a positive double substitution on the hour-mark, bringing on Andy Carroll for Danny Welbeck and replacing James Milner with Theo Walcott.

The changes had little effect, however, with England unable to exploit Walcott’s pace, leaving the Arsenal winger a frustrated spectator.

Prandelli meanwhile rang the changes for Italy, bringing on Diamanti for Cassano and Nocerino for De Rossi.

Diamanti was soon into the action testing Hart with a firm low shot. Nocerino also had a chance to snatch victory two minutes from time, latching onto Marchisio’s lovely pass only for Johnson to block.

Rooney sent a late overhead kick flying wide before the game went into extra-time.

Italy again dominated in extra-time, Diamanti’s curling cross eluding the entire English defence and hitting the post.

Then with five minutes remaining Nocerino had the ball in the net from Diamanti’s across only to be correctly ruled off-side.

Sports / Euro 2012: Greece V Germany, A Political Game by joeyfemous: 6:38pm On Jun 22, 2012
Euro 2012 News

Greece v Germany: For almost three years, Greece has been going through one of the worst crises it has ever experienced.

Since the 1-0 victory against Russia and the entry into the Euro 2012 quarter-finals, euphoria is in evidence again for the first time.

Of all the teams they could have faced, Greece plays Germany, in the most political match a European tournament has seen for a long time.

The Greeks are looking for payback against the Germans. They feel that a duel between Greece and Germany has been going on for much longer, an unequal duel.

Since the start of the crisis, they think they have been insulted and dictated to by German politicians, as the country has had to introduce sweeping austerity in return for bailout payments.
The 'bailout game'

Its Germany vs Greece in the Euro quarter finals. Odds-on Germany to impose penalties, at least Greece can grow their own half-time oranges

Presumably for Germany v Greece the German manager will be able to pick the Greek team and impose tactics?

Greece at halftime of Euro match asks Germany for emergency loan of 4 players.

Greece vs. Germany on Friday. Otherwise known as "The Bailout Game"

They criticise the fact that Chancellor Merkel is sticking to the austerity plan, even though the situation in Greece is worsening and homelessness is on the increase.

The arguments have already escalated to the extent that Ms Merkel has been depicted time and again in an SS uniform on the front page of Greek newspapers.

And over 70% of Greeks now believe that Germany wants to bring in a "Fourth Reich".

On the German side, incomprehension reigns at the Greek reaction to the policies introduced after the crisis, and they refuse to send further billions to a country which is clearly overburdened with the reforms.

Many Germans who in previous years spent their holidays on Greek islands have booked their holidays elsewhere this time.

And now, the football.

One of the few Germans still considered untouchable in Greece is Otto Rehhagel. As the manager of their football team, the German led the Greeks to victory in Euro 2004 and since then has been a hero.

In an interview with the Bild newspaper, Mr Rehhagel said: "Germany shouldn't underestimate Greece."

In fact, numerous players in the Greek squad have already announced that they will be especially motivated against Germany.

Ahead of the duel, Greece's newspapers have been taking aim at Ms Merkel once again. Hardly anybody is talking about the German team and its footballing abilities.

The Live newspaper quipped: "The referee should give Merkel a fright and toss a drachma coin at the beginning of the match."
More than a game

A Gata sports newspaper joked: "The first measure that our new government has to push through on the urging of Merkel: we have to lose against Germany on Friday."

The German press has also drawn humorously on the eurozone crisis. Bild newspaper said on Tuesday: "Be happy dear Greeks, the defeat on Friday is a gift. Against Jogi Loew, no rescue fund will help you."

And Berliner Kurier newspaper printed a cartoon depicting a government spokesman telling the German press "our stance on Greece remaining in the eurozone depends entirely upon how the quarterfinal goes".

People in the streets of Athens are also feverishly awaiting the game - and repeatedly drawing parallels with politics. So far, Greece's matches have hardly been accompanied by any big celebrations, but the bars are expected to be full on Friday.

Nikos Petsas, a 56-year-old salesman, says: "I'm worried that a lot of Greeks are confusing politics with sport with this match. I've put money on the Greek team, because we're in a better position psychologically. Our players have lots of fire in their bellies."

Postman Dimitris Tzikas, 46, says: "There are no problems between Germany and Greece. But with the crisis, Mrs Merkel has chosen to break us as a country.

"The Greek players must run and fight against Germany, so we can win the match. For our country it's much more than a football match."

The news that Merkel was going to be sitting in the stands caused much joy among Greek journalists.

They now hope that new Greek PM Antonis Samaras will also travel to Poland to be at the match.

But whatever the outcome, the politicians will still have a crisis to solve. And that's no laughing matter.

Sports / London Olympics: Team Nigeria’ll Win Medals At The Olympics by joeyfemous: 4:08pm On Jun 20, 2012
London Olympics 2012

London Olympics: Nigeria’s Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, is optimistic that the country’s team will do well at the 2012 London Olympics.
•Nigeria Sports Minister, Abdullahi

Abdullahi is happy with the level of preparations by the various sports federations, and believes Team Nigeria will win medals at the London Games.

“I am very confident that we are going to do well at the Olympics. You remember when I was still the supervising minister, people asked me how was the preparation, I was not so sure but with what I have seen so far, I am confident that we are going to do well.’’ The sports minister said.

Abdullahi said he was not pledging medals haul at the games, but that there was hope of winning medals in some games.

’’ I am not in a position to promise medals. The various federations have promised me medals. But I am not going to start saying, this is it. In boxing, I am very sure we are going to do well. I am confident we are going to do well in wrestling. I am confident we are going to do well in female boxing especially. I am also sure that we are going to do well in weightlifting.

“Our athletes are going to Port Novo next week for the All Africa Open. So, I am confident that the preparation that we have made so far is enough to take us somewhere,’ he said optimistically.

’’I believe that we are going to do very well. I am not saying that we are going to be where we should be. That requires greater work than we have done. But I am confident that Nigeria will do well in this Olympic Games,’’ the minister said in an interview monitored on voiceofnigeria.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Basketball Federation, NBBF, has outlined the itinerary for the men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, ahead of the London 2012 Olympic Games qualifying tournament in Venezuela.

D’Tigers, who have been on a training tour of China, will head to Houston, the United States, to play against Great Britain’s national team today.

Thereafter, the team will travel to Brazil for a 4-Nation Tournament, scheduled to hold between 25 and 30 June, where they will face Greece, New Zealand and the hosts, Brazil.

They will then head for Venezuela for the London 2012 Olympic Games Basketball event qualifiers, billed from 2-8 July in Caracas.

D’Tigers, made up of 8 foreign-based players and 3 home-based stars, earlier featured in some build up games against Foshan Long Lions Basketball club of China on 9-13 June, which they won by 84-54, 74-47 and 110- 67 points respectively.

They also defeated Fujian Quanzhou Bank Basketball club by 84-56 on 14 June before beating Shanxi Zhongyu Basketball team 94-80 on 16 June, in what seemed like the toughest build up game in China.

Drawn in Group B of the qualifiers, the Ayo Bakare-led team will face Lithuania and the hosts, Venezuela.

Euro 2012

Euro 2012: England made it through to the knock-out stages of Euro 2012 with a narrow 1-0 win over Co-hosts Ukraine at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk on Tuesday.

Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney opened the scoring just after the restart with a simple header from close range.

Despite a late push from Ukraine, Roy Hodgson’s men held on to their lead and just did enough to secure all three points.
France Advance Depite Loss

Former World Champions France made it through to the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 despite losing 2-0 to Sweden in Kiev.

Les Bleus missed too many opportunities in front of goal and conceded an outstanding second half goal courtesy of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Erik Hamren’s men, who had no chance of making it through to the knockout-stages, looked in great shape and eventually made sure of the win thanks to a late goal from Sebastian Larsson.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Chelsea Hire's Di Matteo Manager by joeyfemous: 2:55pm On Jun 15, 2012
Chelsea Hire's Di Matteo manager

Chelsea have appointed Roberto Di Matteo as their full-time coach on a two-year contract.

The Blues have moved to confirm the Italian as their permanent boss just three weeks after he led them to their first Champions League title while in interim charge.

Di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas for the final 11 weeks of the season and inspired a stunning rejuvenation as they won the FA Cup before their famous penalty shoot-out win over Bayern Munich in the Champions League final.

Di Matteo, who turned 42 last month, was ecstatic to take on the role permanently.

"I'm obviously delighted to have been appointed as manager and first-team coach," Di Matteo said.

"We all achieved incredible success last season that made history for this great club.

"Our aim is to continue building on that and I'm already planning and looking forward to the squad's return for pre-season."

Despite Di Matteo's success there was speculation Chelsea would look elsewhere for a full-time boss, with Pep Guardiola apparently atop their wish-list following his departure from Barcelona.

Owner Roman Abramovich was said to be keen to bring in Guardiola despite the Spaniard showing little interest in revoking his decision to take a year's sabbatical from the game.

Rumors Guardiola could be swayed grew stronger as the weeks passed since Chelsea's Munich triumph, but in confirming Di Matteo's appointment chief executive Ron Gourlay labelled the former Blues midfielder the "right man to lead Chelsea onto further success".

Gourlay also revealed Di Matteo had been involved in the decision to make recent signings with the club having already made the big-money capture of Eden Hazard following the end of last season.

"Roberto's quality was clear for all to see when he galvanized the squad last season and helped the club make history, and the owner and board are very pleased he will be continuing his good work," he said.
BLUE MOON

Chelsea fans celebrate their heroes with a special parade in London. We have all the images.

"We all believed he was a young coach with much to offer when we first asked him to take charge of team affairs in March and the manner in which he worked with us, the players and all the staff, and the success that followed, made him the clear choice when it came to selecting the person to take us forward in the seasons to come.

"We will be working closely with Roberto in the weeks ahead, some exciting signings have already been made and Roberto has had input into those.

"Although he has set the bar very high in the short time he has been in charge, we know that Roberto is the right man to lead Chelsea onto further success.

"We are already looking forward to the 2012-13 season which kicks off when Roberto, his staff and players return for pre-season."

Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins, who left the club shortly before Di Matteo filled the same role, believes the decision to hire the 42-year-old full-time will bring much-needed stability to the Stamford Bridge club.

"I'm delighted for him. It'll be nice to see that interim manager title now taken away," he said.

"I think Mr Abramovich was hanging on to see if Pep Guardiola wanted to come out from his year-long retirement. I think it's no secret he sees him as the man to take Chelsea forward.

"I don't think he has to change too much but I think there will be a few changes - with new players coming in whether it's the summer or in the December/January transfer window.

"Roberto in his wisdom selected older lads towards the latter stages of the season and it was fruitful. You need the senior players - your club is only as good as the senior players in it.

"They were playing with smiles on their faces and they got away with things (against Barcelona and Bayern Munich) through sheer persistence and endeavor.

"Roberto put a smile back in the dressing room. The confidence was pretty evident towards the end of the season.

"It's very important they bring a bit of stability back into the club and I think it'll go well for him.

"He's a former Chelsea player so the fans can relate to him as player and manager. It's not often you get a manager come in and within six months win the FA Cup and the Champions League.

"But now it's extremely difficult to surpass what you've already done. It's going to be a very tough season for him."

Chelsea Ready to name Di Matteo their full-time manager - report

The Italian guided the Blues to a FA Cup win and a first ever Champions League crown after taking over on a temporary capacity in March following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas.

Those accomplishments seem to have persuaded owner Roman Abramovich to reward Di Matteo with a permanent role, after reported previous target Pep Guardiola elected to take a year out of management.

It has been speculated that Di Matteo will be offered an initial one-year contract with an option for a further season.

Chelsea’s league campaign, however, was disappointing, as the west London outfit eventually slipped to sixth place in the Premier League, their worst finish since Abramovich bought the club in 2003.

Their league campaign appeared to take a back seat after they achieved an unlikely comeback against Napoli to progress to the Champions League quarter-final.

The Blues toppled Benfica before knocking out defending champions Barcelona with two remarkably robust performances in the semi-final which saw them go on to defeat Bayern Munich on penalties in the final.

And Abramovich now looks set to embark on a spending spree in order to return Chelsea to title contention next season. Lille playmaker Eden Hazard will join the club next month in a deal with over £30 million, with a possible deal for Porto forward Hulk also reportedly being negotiated.

Sports / Christian Obodo: Christian Obodo Finally Freed by joeyfemous: 2:18pm On Jun 11, 2012
The Nigerian police in Delta State on Sunday rescued Italy-based Super Eagles player Christian Obodo, who was kidnapped in Warri Friday night.

Both the the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Ikechukwu Aduba, and the chairman of the state Sports Commission, Pinick Amaju, confirmed Obodo’s freedom.

Obodo was released by the abductors who had initially requested a N30 Million ransom after frantic efforts by the Delta state Police Command. He was rescued at Enevo, a village in Isoko, Delta state.

“Christian is with me now”, said Amaju, who also doubles as the state FA chairman.

“My men carried out the operation and rescued the footballer at about 8.30 pm,” Aduba, the police commissioner said in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.

“Obodo is alright; he is not hurt in anyway. Right now, he is with us, under police protection.”

The commissioner said that the policemen also arrested some suspects during the rescue operation.

News of the abduction of the Super Eagles and Udinese midfielder by gunmen on Saturday elicited reactions by some ex-internationals who expressed shock and disappointment over the incident.

Chelsea stadium move stalls: Chelsea stadium move stalls as club outbid on Battersea Power Station site

Alternatives will now have to be found after the club’s attempts to move to the Wandsworth area end having been outbid by Malaysian developers SP Setia and Sime Darby.

Chelsea have lost out on securing the abandoned Battersea Power Station site, as they look to find suitable grounds to build a new stadium.
The club were outbid by two Malaysian companies, SP Setia and Sime Darby who have acquired the rights.Don’t Miss

The newly-crowned Champions League winners have been looking for a new site on which to build a stadium as their current home, Stamford Bridge, is deemed too small as it is unable match the revenues that Manchester United and Arsenal bring in.

When they submitted their plans last month, Chelsea revealed that they would turn the site into a 60,000-seater stadium which would be “one of the most iconic in the world”.

Around 15 bidders submitted plans last month to buy the site on the River Thames, after proposed plans to turn the area into homes, shops and offices collapsed in December.

A decision was made on Thursday morning and a statement followed from administrators, Ernst & Young, confirming the news:

The statement reads: “Following an extensive global marketing campaign, undertaken by Ernst & Young Real Estate Corporate Finance and Knight Frank LLP, the joint administrators are pleased to announce that on Wednesday 6 June 2012 they entered into an exclusivity agreement with SP Setia and Sime Darby and are working towards a timely exchange and completion of the site and associated land.”

Sports / Nigeria's Super Eagles:eagles Depart For Malawi. by joeyfemous: 2:32pm On Jun 06, 2012
NIGERIA'S Super Eagles; Eagles will fly out of the country to Malawi tomorrow to honour a Nations Cup qualifier against the Flames of Malawi.

According to the travelling arrangements released by the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, the Eagles will travel tomorrow night aboard a chartered flight, for Saturday’s 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against the Flames.

Officials confirmed yesterday that the team will leave tomorrow night and arrive in Blantyre, capital of Malawi, in the early hours of Friday, and will be able to train on Friday evening on the artificial turf of the Kamuzu Stadium.

Already, an advance party of NFF officials yesterday left the country for Malawi, so as to prepare ground for the team’s arrival on Friday morning.

The programme stated further that Saturday’s match at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre will start at 2.30pm Malawi time (1.30pm Nigeria time) and will be refereed by officials from Mauritius.

Meanwhile, the NFF has denied a report that the sum of $80,000 belonging to the Federation went missing.

The story claimed that the sum went missing either during the U-20 Women’s Team’s trip to Kinshasa for a 2012 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying game or on the team’s return, without being certain of the specifics.

NFF General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu said the report was shocking because the said sports paper is highly regarded by the leadership of the NFF.

“There is no iota of truth to the story and coming at this time that we are at the beginning of a busy and very important month in Nigeria football, it is disheartening.

“If our money was missing, we would be the first to declare so and state where and how that happened. This is a case of outright mischief.

He said further: “That story is only in the imagination of those who wrote it. There is nothing like that. If money was missing, players and officials would not have been paid their allowances and match bonuses and there would have been some spurious excuse for that.

“On the contrary, everyone (players and officials) received their full allowances and match bonuses and there was definitely nothing like any money missing”. Amadu called for the support of the entire nation in a month the Super Eagles has kicked off well with three points against Namibia in their start to the race to 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, and in which they still have to play Malawi and Rwanda in major tournament qualifiers, and the Super Falcons host Zimbabwe in an African Women Championship qualifying match, stating that this was no time for distractions as wished by mischief makers.
