Politics / Nigeria @56 Time For The Youth! An Article By Charles Onyeukwu (Ocso) by MediaDeveloper(m): 12:10pm On Oct 06, 2016
1st October 2016. Nigeria celebrated her 56th year as an independent nation and the social media was abuzz with lots of beautiful pictures and words glorifying the supremacy of the state called Nigeria.

From what I gathered, the top and most inspiring buzz were created by young Nigerians with lots of them wishing to share in the glory of Nigeria to come. Some of these young and vibrant Nigerian youths especially those from the academia expressed their interest in holding one or more leadership position in Nigeria’s future.

One thing that went through my mind constantly as I was viewing these inspiring post by my fellow Nigerian youths is one old saying that says the youths are the leaders of tomorrow.

Outside the online social media, the federal government declared a public holiday that stretches the weekend into the Monday and offered many Nigerians the luxury of hanging out with those close to their hearts, and make new friends among other things.

The mood of celebration around Abuja was not as glorious as my young friends in the media, ICT and creative industry painted it online. People were merely happy because of the public holiday.

Worse even, most of the young people I interacted with during the independence holiday were busy complaining of the current recession in Nigeria and fantasizing on how they would make Nigerian great again when they occupy important leadership positions.

My young friends were all right in their opinions. The current recession in Nigeria was caused by the action and inaction of those we voted to lead us and those who manipulated their way up to chair leadership positions.

For Nigeria to be great again, it will require the efforts of our leaders to right the wrongs of those who have mislead us and uphold the values and ideas of those who had set the path of greatness for Nigeria.

Our misleaders will continue to mislead and lord it over us until the leaders with good intention and clear vision to rebuild Nigeria stop daydreaming of a tomorrow that will never come and begin to lead this country called Nigeria in every little way they can because tomorrow is now!

Politics / President Buhari Charges Newly Promoted Public Officers To Justify Their Promoti by MediaDeveloper(m): 4:01pm On Jun 23, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari Thursday in Abuja charged public officers entrusted with certain responsibilities to live up to their duties and

justify the confidence reposed in them as this was the only way Nigeria can get out of the current hardships facing the nation.
Report from the office of the SSA on Media and Publicity to President Buhari shows the statement said by the President while decorating two of the newly promoted officers of the Nigerian Police Force deployed to his office with their new ranks.

President Buhari congratulated the officers and urged them to justify their new ranks by increasing their commitment to the service of the nation. He also commended them for their hard work and achievements which brought about their promotion.

He stressed that Nigeria needed their dedication and unwavering commitment for it to achieve greatness and assume its rightful position, cautioning them not to abuse their positions.

Abdulkarim Dauda and Kayode Sikiru Akande, both promoted from the position of Assistant Commissioner of Police to Deputy Commissioner of Police, serve as the Chief Personal Security Officer to the President and the Officer in Charge of Presidential Movement respectively.

Celebrities / American First Lady, Michelle Obama Is Now On Snapchat by MediaDeveloper(m): 7:31pm On Jun 21, 2016
American First Lady and probably the coolest First Lady of all time, Michelle Obama, has just joined social media network Snapchat.

According to The Verge, Mrs. Obama will use the account to post snaps from the White House and give followers a behind-the-scenes view of her daily life and events with the president throughout the year.

She’s kicking off her social media venture with a trip to Liberia, Morocco and Spain next week as part of the White House’s ‘Let Girls Learn‘ program, along with Meryl Streep and Freida Pinto. She’ll present her journey as a Snapchat Story.

Though it’s easy to make fun of one of the most powerful women in the world joining a social media platform often viewed as being “just for teens,” it’s one of the simplest ways for the First Lady to reach a huge audience of (future) voters and taxpayers.

You can follow her at snapchat.com/add/michelleobama.

Nairaland / General / Waitress Upset Over ‘best Butt’ Award Presented To Her by MediaDeveloper(m): 10:36pm On Jun 20, 2016
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- A woman in Southport says she's offended after receiving an award from her employer for having the "Best Butt" on staff.

The woman, who has asked not to be named, is a waitress at Scotty's Brewhouse in Southport. She says on Monday night, during an event where staff was given awards, she received the accolade in full view of about fifty coworkers.

The woman says that when the award was given to her by management, she was then told to turn around in front of everyone so people could take pictures of her behind. According to the woman, other employees were also given awards, but for things like "Best Bartender" and "Best Server." She says she has worked for Scotty's Brewhouse for more than a year.

“I feel like I’m more than just a butt," said the woman. "I feel like I’m smart, I’m going to school.”

The woman says she went to Scotty's corporate HR and was told by upper-level management the award was not their idea. She says that so far, no one has offered her an apology. According to her, she is still working for the restaurant while also holding down a second job and attending classes.

“I have two jobs so I can make money and continue to go to school," said the woman, "and then get my degree and not work two jobs anymore.”

FOX59 News has tried several times to contact Scotty's Brewhouse corporate offices for comment, but so far has not received any kind of a response. The woman said she has consulted with an attorney and is considering filing a complaint with the EEOC.

Business / FG Reduces MTN Fine To N330 Billion To Be Payed In 3 Years by MediaDeveloper(m): 1:16pm On Jun 20, 2016
– MTN fined $1,000 per each unregistered subscribers

– FEC under pressure to reduce the fine imposed on MTN

– FEC reduced the fine to N330 Billion to be paid in 3 years

The Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shittu, clears the air over the MTN N1.03 Trillion fine impose for failing to meet the deadline fixed by the NCC to disconnect the subscribers not properly registered, the MTN was fined $1,000 per each of its affected 5.2 million subscribers, totaling $5.2 billion.

The Minister said this in an interview granted to the journalist in Ibadan, Oyo state, the Federal Executive Council decided to relax the penalty against the telecommunications giant after realizing the negative impact the burden could have on the nation, its people and the economy.

“As far as we are concerned, the MTN issue is a closed matter. The Federal Executive Council has remitted substantial part of the penalty to them. Nigeria as a country must move on. We must not do anything to drive away foreign investors. Foreign investments are potent means of bringing about development and wealth creation

Mr. Shittu said there was pressure on the FEC from different quarters, which later agreed to reduce the fine imposed on MTN to N330 billion to be paid within a period of three years.

Education / Algeria Blocks Access To Facebook, Twitter Over Exam Paper Leak by MediaDeveloper(m): 11:21am On Jun 20, 2016
Mediterranean and Saharan North African country of Algeria have temporarily blocked access to Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites for their citizens after baccalaureate exam papers leaked on social media, state media reported on Sunday.

More than 555,000 students in Algerian students are having to retake their exams as a result of the baccalaureate exams details were leaked over social media.
Blocking access to online services seems to be a growing trend across the globe. While governments may have good intentions when they impose such restrictions, it’s worrying because it restricts people’s ability to communicate with their loved ones and communities in times of crisis and blocks the flow of accurate information and news.

Banning services – even temporarily – can do more harm than good. What governments should be doing, especially in cases like this leak in Algeria – is to examine the root cause of the issue and address it directly, rather than restrict access to a crucial service that’s now become part of our daily lives.

For its part, the Algerian government said that earlier this month, its police forces arrested several people, including officials working in national education offices and printers, during their investigation into how 2016 high school exam papers were leaked onto social networks. Clearly, there’s more work to be done before the issue is sorted in the country.

Sports / Maradona Accuses Sepp Blatter Of Stealing Fifa’s Money by MediaDeveloper(m): 12:24pm On Jun 18, 2016
Former Argentinian football star Diego Maradona on Friday accused FIFA’s former president, Joseph Blatter, of stealing while at the helm of the international football association.

Maradona compared him with a former government official imprisoned for corruption in Argentina, claiming that Blatter has more money than Jose Lopez.
Lopez was Argentina’s public works secretary during the governments of Nestor Kirchner (2003 to 2007) and his wife Cristina Fernandez (2007 to 2015).

He was arrested on Tuesday while trying to hide millions of dollars in a monastery.

The former World Cup champion asked Loretta Lynch, the U.S. Attorney General investigating corruption within FIFA, to come to Argentina so that she could see things for herself.

He said a former Argentina football executive, Julio Grondona, who is already deceased, was the one who taught Blatter to steal.

Maradona, 55, said the current FIFA president, Switzerland’s Gianni Infantino, was “saddened” by the situation involving the football association.

“Infantino has asked me to collaborate.

“Both in FIFA and in the AFA (Argentine Football Association) dynamite has to be thrown in so that a fresh start can be made.

“Infantino was saddened. He could not do anything at all from outside of FIFA,’’ Maradona noted.

Crime / Nigerian Police To Combat Crime With Drones by MediaDeveloper(m): 2:24pm On Jun 16, 2016
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Solomon E. Arase Wednesday commissioned the Nigeria Police Forensic Laboratory and Digital Resource Centre at the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (FCIID), Abuja.

The IGP stressed the importance of integrating the global best policing practices which he said it has been the core focus of his leadership.

Arase said that the forensic-guided police operation represents a critical component of modern policing functions.

He said that biometric support to policing is not only a source of police intelligence, but also a vital aid to successful investigation and prosecution of criminal elements.

Arase lamented on the lack of forensic capacity over the years which has been a major factor the inability of the Police to manage complex criminal situations.

“Today’s event is designed to bridge this capacity gap in the Force in relation to forensic assets of the Force.

“The asset being commissioned today is a traditional scientific investigation tool of police departments all over the world.

“It is also a Personal Identity Management System that the Nigeria Police Force ought to have had long before now.

“The facility has a wide variety of applications for the positive identification of suspects through their fingerprints, iris and facial recognition functions.

“It is designed to collect, store, merge and display the identity of the targeted criminal element even at the scene of crime.

“The system can also convert existing manual record of arrested suspects into digital and searchable format.”He said.

The IGP said that the facility has been set up to complement the existing Forensic Laboratory in Lagos.

He added that the the Digital Resource Centre was designed to serve as an information processing centre where outcomes of analysed pieces of forensic evidence or other specialised policing materials or criminal information are disseminated in the most secure fashion to other Police Formation.

“It has the capacity for accessing over five (5) million Law Enforcement Research materials such as journals, reports, Force orders, annual reports, forensic books and publications by renowned Police authors and experts around the world over.
“From the Digital Resource Centre, officers can conduct research from any facet of policing through the FCIID robust data portal also connected to the INTERPOL Global Learning Centre, Singapore.” Arase said.

He said that other features include full display of digital maps as well as crime scene investigation, and forensic videos.

He also said that the centre will serve as a central Unit for training, presentation and strategic meetings for the various sections of the FCIID.

Arase commended the Police team that coordinated the implementation of the project and applauded their sense of commitment to duty that aided the his leadership in bequeathing the nation a new Police Force that the citizens have been desiring for decades.

He reminded officers that will utilise the facility, that modern policing is no longer by power, might or extra-judicial means.

“It is driven by application of technology, forensic science, intelligence and above all, citizen’s consent.” He added.

The IGP cautioned the officers that there will be no excuse for them to operate in unprofessional manner.

“You, rather, now have the means to align your operations to the rule of law, citizens’ professional expectations, and best international practices. I trust that you shall up your policing game, accordingly.” He said.
