Politics / Smart Phones: INEC Plans To Rig 2019 Poll For APC, Says PDP by metromediaboss: 4:48pm On Sep 18, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday condemned the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), to ban the use of smart phones in polling units.

The party specifically, accused INEC of a surreptitious move to prevent the global community from knowing its plan to rig the 2019 general elections.

The National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, condemned the decision by INEC during a meeting with stakeholders from Bayelsa East Senatorial District in Yenagoa.

A statement issued by Fidelis Soriwei, Special Adviser Governor Henry Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State on Media Relations, further quoted Secondus as saying that it was quite puzzling that the commission would attempt to prevent the use of smart phones.

While describing smart phones as the easiest means of communication in the society, during elections, the PDP stressed that the decision to ban its use was the strategy of INEC and the APC to rig the 2019 elections.

Secondus argued that the commission by that singular act had sent the country to the dark, primitive era.

The PDP Chairman also restated his opposition of President Muhammadu Buhari’s refusal to sign the amended Electoral Act in a bid to avoid the use of card readers.

He said, “We have all heard what the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, said about the decision to ban the use of smart phones in the polling units. All over the world, a smart phone is the easiest way of communication.

“What they have said clearly shows that the commission in connivance with the All Progressives Congress have perfected a rigging strategy for the next election. In fact, INEC has sent Nigeria back to the primitive days.

“The same plan to rig the 2019 election is responsible for the refusal of the President to sign the amended Electoral Act because the card reader must be used.

“Our position is that INEC is wrong, there is no where in the constitution or in the electoral act , where smart phones are banned. INEC, if you throw this country to crisis, you will be held responsible.”

Secondus said that Nigeria was under siege as the Federal Government had introduced an obnoxious suspension of the people right to freedom in the country.

He expressed the alarm that more people had been killed in the country in the past one year that those killed in the Nigerian civil war from 1967 to 1970.

He lamented that the APC had introduced dictatorial tendencies that were worse that the repression witnessed under the military.

Secondus also accused the Federal Government òf borrowing N11 trillion in three years in spite of the huge amount of money budgeted yearly to run the government .

He said that the nation’s debt profile had hit the highest of all time under the APC-led Federal Government.

“We have borrowed N11 trillion and you don’t feel the impact of the budget except in Daura. Nigeria has witnessed nepotism, that has never been felt this way in this country.

“The international community is worried about Nigeria. The country is broke, our debt profile has risen to highest level. Nigeria is under siege. Freedom and rights have denied our people. .The country is going through very difficult and trying the moments.”

In his remarks, Governor Dickson urged the people of the Niger Delta to give the expected support to Secondus in his efforts to lead the PDP to electoral victory in 2019.

He described the PDP as the party of the Niger Delta

Politics / Ajimobi Shuts Down Obasanjo Farms, Banks, University Press, Others In Oyo by metromediaboss: 4:35pm On Sep 18, 2018
Oyo State Government is not leaving any stone unturned in its aggressive tax drive as it has continued to shut down major business outfits that are defaulting in the payment of taxes.

Among the companies shut down today is Obasanjo Farms located at Oluyole Industrial Estate, Ibadan, which is owned by former Nigerian President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

Also affected are banks, MRS oil, Black Horse, Heinemann Educational Books, Lister Flour Mills, University Press Limited, Evans Brother, Brooking House, Group Medical hospital, Butterfield bakery, Chicken Republic and Rasmed publicity.

Some of the affected companies are located at Dugbe, Eleyele, Podo, Challenge, Onireke areas of Ibadan.

The exercise coordinated by the Oyo State Board of Internal Revenue, OYBIR, is being carried out by the combined task force team of the Oyo State Inter-ministerial Enforcement Unit.

Speaking on the exercise, OYBIR Chairman, Mr. Bicci Alli pointed out that the exercise became inevitable because of the failure of the affected companies to comply with the state tax laws after given the opportunities to do so. He appealed to the affected companies to do the needful so as to have their businesses back on track

According to him, “the exercise we carried out today is not something new and not outside the law. It is within the law. We went to restrain some corporate organizations that failed to pay what is due to Oyo state government after giving due notices, demand notices and even public notices to that effect and they failed to pay. So we went to those places to distain them from having access to their premises and it’s going to be a continuous exercise, all through the week and even next week.

What they are guilty of is the payment of the environmental development levy. Some of them owe about two years. We wrote to them and gave them notices to pay, they refused to pay. It was as a result of their failure to pay that we now embarked on the needful. But it’s so sad that not until we have to take this step against the firms that they are now actually coming out to pay”.

He concluded, “Government is not interested in disrupting the business of these corporate organizations, the business of government is to create an enabling environment for business to thrive which Oyo state government has done tremendously well in the last few years and that’s why you see businesses springing up on daily basis in Oyo state.

The government cannot disrupt their businesses unless where it is absolutely necessary. The focus now is that we will collect every kobo that people owe the state government, we did publication on August 13, in two widely read newspapers, drawing the attention of corporate organizations and individual residents of Oyo state to pay all their taxes, dues and levies that they are supposed to pay to the state government within 14 days.

But that was like a reminder, prior to that: we served demand notices in line with extant laws on corporate organizations, individuals to pay their taxes. Some of the taxes are due early January, February, March, depending on the position of the law. However, when they failed to pay, we did the reminder in line with the position of the law and we now did a public notice on 14th August, giving them 14 days to be able to pay. So, nobody could tell us that they were not informed”.

The Federal Government has commissioned a gully erosion and flood control project in Akpene Eket and environs in the Eket Local Government Area (LGA) of Akwa Ibom State.

The project to stop flooding and gully erosion ravaging some parts of the LGA was executed through the Ecological Fund Office (EFO) in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF).

Dr. Okey Enelamah, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, who represented President Muhammadu Buhari at the commissioning ceremony, stated that the Federal Government is committed to tackling ecological challenges and is confident that such interventions will bring a huge relief to the affected communities.

The project is one of the 26 Federal Government ecological intervention projects for the second quarter of 2017 approved by President Buhari on the 10th of April 2017. The contract was awarded by the Ecological Fund Office Tenders Board (EFOTB) on 30th May, 2017.

After the inspection of the three sites remediated under this project, Enelamah said, “From the visit to the remediated sites, I am happy about the quality of work done and the takeaway is that this Government is a ‘Doing Government’, committed to project completion.

“Also, the approval of this project by Mr. President is a testimony of his Administration’s promise not to allow any part of the country suffer neglect, irrespective of geographical location or political consideration.”

The minister said, the Buhari Administration is determined to rebuild the country’s infrastructure, which over the years has been characterized by a gap too wide to effectively support economic growth and job creation.

“The administration is focused on rebuilding and modernizing strategic national infrastructure to spur economic growth and development; a viable and sustainable way of increasing jobs, and improving living standards.”

He noted that although countries around the world are facing various environmental challenges from unusually heavy rains causing devastating floods and massive erosion, the Federal Government is resolved to addressing the needs of the affected areas in the country.

Expressing his happiness to be associated with the commissioning of the worthy project as a Special Guest of Honour, Minister Enelamah formally commissioned and handed over the project to the Akpene Eket Communities.

He congratulated the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha and his team in the Ecological Fund Office (EFO), the Project Contractor, Messrs Munaish Investment Nigeria Limited, as well as the Project Consultant, Messrs AAP and Partnership International Ltd for their doggedness in ensuring the speedy completion of the project.

He also expressed appreciation of the Federal Government to the State and Eket LGA Governments, as well as the Akpene Eket communities for their co-operation and efforts at ensuring a peaceful environment for project execution.

Reminding the communities of the need for a healthy maintenance culture, he implored them to ensure effectiveness of the project by preventing indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the drainage channels.

“It is the responsibility of the Communities to take proud ownership of the project and to embrace a maintenance culture that will ensure its sustainability,” he said.

Education / LASU Lecturers Protest Against Olanrewaju Fagbohun, The Vice Chancellor (Photos) by metromediaboss: 6:12pm On Sep 14, 2018
LASU Academic Staff Union Leads Protest To Government House Against VC

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos State University branch, were at the Lagos State Government house to protest alleged mismanagement and impunity by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Olanrewaju Fagbohun.

The protesters, who chanted union songs, also bore placards inscribed with words such as 'Dr. Fagbohun is a political professor'; 'Governor Ambode, set up a visitation panel for LASU now'; 'Fabgohun respect LASU laws and regulations', among others.

The protest, however, ended peacefully according to a statement by the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad on Twitter, which read: "Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) LASU Branch were at the State House to protest. Our men interacted with them, it ended peacefully and they left us their placards and paper signs".

Fagbohun’s troubles date back to the claim by the institution’s ASUU that his appointment as vice chancellor in 2016 was unmerited.

The ASUU had, among others, alleged that Fagbohun’s professorship was illegally backdated from 2014 to 2007 to enable him to meet the 10 years professorial qualification required for appointment as LASU VC.

However, Fagbohun had said the process leading to his professorship award being back-dated to 2007, started in 2012, at a time he never even dreamt of vying for the office of VC.

Politics / Fayose To Fayemi: My Handover Note Will Address Your Worries by metromediaboss: 6:55pm On Sep 09, 2018
Exactly 35 days to his leaving office, outgoing Ekiti state governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose on Sunday says his handover note is ready for the scrutiny of people making enquiries about his government.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the governor did not cooperate with the Transition Committee set up by Incoming-Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.

Fayose snubbed the request by the committee, for certain records of his tenure.

He claimed the committeee is illegal.

Fayose, in a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, urged the Governor-Elect to stop spreading falsehood about him or the finances of his administration.

He described as mere fabrication, the claim that his government had accumulated a debt of N117 billion as against the N18 billion it inherited.

Fayemi was “already preparing excuses for his impending failure at the tribunal”, Fayose said.

Fayose insisted that the State Government under him has no obligation to relate with any committee not empowered by law, stating that the governor-elect should wait for the handing over note that will be handed to him on October 16.

He said it was funny that the same Transition Committee that claimed it did not get any information from the State government estimated the state debt at N117 billion.

He reiterated that his government only received N10 billion grant from the Excess Crude Account, which was released to all States for capital projects as well as Budget Support fund released to states by the Federal Government.

“It is on record that Ekiti State Government was indebted to the tune of N86, 013,689,097 as at October 16, 2014 that Governor Fayose took over.

“The debts are broken down as follows: Bank Loans; N15, 831,613,425.62, Bond; N26, 749,796,784.75, Outstanding Warrants; N15, 522,552,900.76, Outstanding to Road Contractors; N21, 286,126,749, Outstanding Remittances to FG; N709, 883,656.75, Outstanding Remittances (State Govt); N592, 995,374.89 and EKSG Public Servants Outstanding Emoluments; N5, 137,888,224.37,” he said.

The governor counselled Fayemi to face the task of “defending the mandate that he stole and his fraudulent emergence as the APC candidate instead of treading the usual path of deceiving the public to cover up his failure”,

Education / Ekiti Extends Holiday For Primary, Secondary Schools by metromediaboss: 9:22pm On Sep 08, 2018
Ekiti State Government on Saturday announced extention of the current long term holidays for students in public and private primary and secondary schools.

This is contained in a statement by the state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Mr. Jide Egunjobi, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) in Ado Ekiti.

The commisioner said all schools would now resume on Sept. 24, as against Sept. 14 earlier resumption date.

According to the commissioner, the extension of the holidays has become necessary to allow the various schools conduct interviews for fresh students across the state.

Besides, he said the extension would also allow for consolidation of the school system before resumption of pupils and students.

Consequently, all parents, guardians and other stakeholders in the education sector are urged to take note of the extension and disseminate the information appropriately.

The commissioner implored teachers and workers in various schools to brace up for better service delivery as they awaited the new resumption day.

Phones / Phones Can Transmit Virus, Germs, Expert Warns by metromediaboss: 10:31pm On Sep 07, 2018
A Public Health Physician, Dr Michael Oguntoye, has warned that mobile phones could transmit diseases and infections if it comes in contact with body fluids of an infected person.

Oguntoye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that phones are “fomites” which could serve as medium of transmitting viral organism, causing diseases and infections on people.

He described fomites as any non-living object or substance capable of carrying infectious organisms, such as viruses or bacteria.

“Taking a cell phone into the bathroom and then leaving with it, can carry diseases and germs, especially when you do not wash your hands and then coming out,” he said.

According to him, phones can transfer diseases and virus from one individual to another.

Oguntoye, an epidemiologist with Kwara Ministry of Health, advised people to keep phones away from the toilet and observe personal hygiene such as hand washing at all times.

He also recommended cleaning of phones with disinfectant that would not harm the phones.

Career / Radio Kwara Staff Shut Down Station by metromediaboss: 9:12am On Sep 06, 2018
Workers of the Kwara State Broadcasting Corporation, (Radio Kwara), on Wednesday in Ilorin shut down the station and staged a protest over lack of operational equipment and welfare package for staff

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the State Government’s move to cancel the AM Station was part of the trigger for the protest.

A staff who pleaded anonymity said the State government was planning to evacuate the staff from its GRA office to Budo Efo transmission area, a suburb of Ilorin, the Kwara capital.

“This Budo Efo always affects the reproductive organs of the staff working there ,due to the effect of radiation of the old transmitter and the antenna .

“If you notice, some of the staff posted to Budo-efo are childless. while few ones that had children have their children deformed.

“The last option given us is to transfer all the staff to Budo-Efo particularly to enable them sell the land harbouring Radio Kwara AM.

“As we speak, the land surrounding Radio Kwara 2, Midland FM has been sold.

“Since KWIRS has taken over our revenue, to buy diesel to power the station is a problem. That is why both AM and FM stations are running skeletal transmission always.

“The Sole Administrator, Dr. Muyideen Akorede has destroyed the station through his shoddy repositioning since 2016,” the source said.

The source further explained that Dr. Akorede always shortchanged the station’s General Manager by not releasing monthly subventions to run the station since the state government took over the station’s Internally Generated Revenue.

Another worker claimed that virtually all departments in Radio Kwara, including the newsroom, lack working facilities and tools.

He said the state government had perfected plans to kill the AM station and concentrate on Midland FM 99.0 at Apata Yukuba, Ilorin.

“The same FM is dying. The next one is overall welfare of staff, delay in payment of meagre salaries, among others,” he said.

“The state government officials including Dr. Akorede are now patronising private radio stations in the state, paying huge amounts to feature on their programmes living Radio Kwara to die.

“All the staff have been demoralised. We are staging this protest not because of us, but because of the future of Radio Kwara and the state at large.,” he added.

Dr. Akorede, who is the Senior Special Assistant (SSA), Media and Communication to the state Governor and Sole Administrator for all state owned media houses, said rainstorm destroyed a device which necessitated the movement from GRA office to Budo Efo.

He explained that it was in the spirit of keeping the station running that the staff were asked to move to Budo Efo temporarily.

Dr. Akorede explained that N5m has been released to the station for its running cost and that the only salary owed the staff was that of August, which will be paid before the end of the week.

The Governor’s aide boasted that no TV station in the North Central of Nigeria can match the standard of the repositioned state owned television station (KWTV).

He claimed that the state government pays for all its jingles that it runs on Radio Kwara

Politics / Ahead 2019 Polls: 259 Declare Interests In 35 Seats In Ekiti by metromediaboss: 6:14pm On Sep 05, 2018
No fewer than 259 aspirants have so far declared their interests in Senatorial, House of Representatives and State House of Assembly seats, in the forthcoming 2019 general elections in Ekiti.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prospective candidates would contest for the three senatorial seats, six House of Representatives’ seats and 26 seats in the State House of Assembly come 2019.

No fewer than 40 persons are currently seeking the nod of their various political parties for the national and state assembly seats from the five most visible parties in the state.

The number of aspirants is expected to increase as the build-up to the 2019 polls continues to gather momentum.

The prominent parties in the state are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), MEGA Party, Accord Party (AP) and the Peoples Party of Nigeria, (PPN).

Many of the aspirants under the platforms of the parties had already flooded Ado Ekiti and other major towns of Ikole-Ekiti; Ikere-Ekiti; Ijero-Ekiti; Emure-Ekiti; and Ifaki-Ekiti, with their campaign billboards, handbills and posters.

The aspirants include: Senators Fatimat Raji-Rasaki, Biodun Olujimi, Ayo Arise and Olubunmi Adetumbi.

Also, the former Secretary-General of the Nigeria Bar Association, (NBA), Mr. Obafemi Adewale and a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele had indicated their interests.

Others are the former chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state, Mr Tai Oguntayo; a former Chief of Staff in the state, Chief Yemi Adaramodu; and the former Special Adviser on Documentation in the state, Hakeem Jamiu.

The list also include: Dr Segun Osinkolu, Mr. Demola Oladaiye and Mr Abayomi Lostay, among others.

Opeyemi Bamidele who was a former Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State, told NAN that he was in the senatorial race.

He said that this was because the people of Ekiti Central Senatorial District considered him worthy of the office.

Also, Sen. Ayo Arise said he was the best for the job of representing the people of Ekiti North Senatorial District, considering his previous experience in the senate, business background and track record.

Also, Tai Oguntayo, the former NUJ chairman, who is at present the chairman of the Association of Nigeria Authors (ANA), said that he planned to bring his vast experience in unionism and public service into the legislative chamber in the state assembly.

Oguntayo was also a former Secretary to Ekiti West Local Government.

The chairman of PPN in the state, Chief Dare Adekolu, confirmed that many of his paty’s members were, indeed, interested in one elective post or the other.

According to him, the party has no problems with the number of aspirants, saying it shows how democratic a party can be in accommodating all shades of opinions and aspirations.

Adekolu said the INEC had directed that the political parties must conduct their primaries between September and October.

He said the outcome of such primaries would determine who would become the flag bearers of the various parties during the 2019 general elections.

The parties in the state had kept the names of their presidential aspirants close to their chests.

However, the state governorship election was concluded on July 14 with the emergence of Dr John Kayode Fayemi as the governor-elect

Politics / SDP Presidential Ticket Open To All Limitless Nigerians- Official by metromediaboss: 10:01pm On Sep 04, 2018
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) says its presidential ticket is not zoned to any part of the country but open to all eligible Nigerians.

Deputy National Chairman of the party, Abdul Isiaq, said this when he received former governor of Cross River and a presidential aspirant, Mr Donald Duke, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Restating that the ticket could go to capable person from any part of the country, Isiaq said “the party gives Nigerians the constitutional right to test their popularity.

“People make mistake thinking that the decision of the party in power will affect every other political party.

“SDP is an open-door party. It is about mobilisation and canvases. Whoever the party choses as candidate, so shall it be’’.

He welcomed Duke to SDP, saying it was a party with committed members and driving force, according to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.

In his remarks, Duke said that he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he had been a member for 20 years because the party had lost its values and now a shadow of itself.

“The PDP we joined in 1998 is certainly not the same party that is in place today.

“When the former President of the country walked away from the part, you should know there is problem somewhere.

“PDP is the first truly national party, but over the years, you will see that it lost that and became a shadow of itself,” he said.

Duke said that he also left PDP to SDP because the nation was seeking for rebirth and most Nigerians were seeking something different and better which the SDP represented.

“I believe that the nation is seeking for rebirth. I believe that most Nigerians are yearning for something different and better and I am hoping that as like minds, we will come together.’’

He also disclosed that he would be contesting for the position of the president on the platform of SDP, and expressed confidence that though 2019 elections may be tough, he would win.

On the president’s refusal of assent to the amended Electoral Act Bill, Duke said that there were a lot of politics around the Electoral Act.

He that the president’s refusal on the bill may not be unconnected with the issue of re-ordering of the election sequence.

“I think that is still largely the underlining reasons for the president veto to the amended Act. In politics, people want to take advantage of what will satisfy them.”

He expressed the hope that issues surrounding the Electoral Act would be resolved in order not to affect the 2019 general elections.

Crime / Police Arrest Over 1,000 Armed Robbery, Kidnapping Suspects by metromediaboss: 7:10pm On Sep 03, 2018
The Nigeria Police Force said it arrested over 1,000 armed robbery, kidnapping and cattle rustling suspects within one year of the creation of the Operation Absolute Sanity on the Kaduna/Abuja highways.

The News Agency of Nigeria ( NAN) reports that the Force, on July 25, 2017, commenced the operation on the highways.

The team includes Police Mobile Force, Counter Terrorism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Intelligence Response Team, Special Tactical Squad, Force Intelligence Branch and Police Helicopters.

The operation was to complement and augment the on-going Joint Police/Military operations on ground before now.

The force Spokesman, acting DCP Jimoh Moshood, disclosed this while addressing newsmen on the arrest of 32 suspects in connection with armed robbery, kidnapping and cattle rustling on Monday in Tafa, Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Moshood said that the arrest cut across Kogi, Kaduna, Niger, Plateau, Sokoto, Zamfara and FCT, among others.

He said that the force would not relent in its efforts to reduce crimes to the barest minimum in the country, adding that the operation would be sustained and extended to other parts of the country.

Moshood said that the 32 suspects specialised in attacking travelers on the Kaduan/Abuja highway.

He said that items recovered from the suspects included 22 Ak 47 rifles, one Toyota Corolla car, and 127 AK 47 ammunition.

The spokesman said the suspects, who confessed to the various roles they played in the crimes, would be charged to court on completion of investigation.

Moshood said that contrary to insinuation by members of the public, the police did not release suspects after presenting them to the media.

“The police do not release suspects after parading them as alleged by members of the public,” he said.

He said that the police would always ensure that suspects arrested were prosecuted according to the laws of the land.

Moshood, who said that several convictions had been secured, added that the police and the judiciary must work together to achieve results.

He urged appropriate authority to dispense cases to avoid the recycling of suspects by the police.
