Sports / David Moyes Blames Poor Manchester United Results On Fearful Players by Napolitano(m): 1:58pm On Oct 20, 2013

Manchester United boss David Moyes has rejected claims that the Premier League champions have lost their fear factor since he succeeded Sir Alex Ferguson.

United are eight points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal after being held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday.

"Sir Alex Ferguson has a great history and his experience will always work in charge of any team," said Moyes.
"But the fear comes from the team on the pitch."

United have only one victory from four league games at Old Trafford since Ferguson's retirement, but Moyes insisted: "The players have always been the people that have to turn out and do it."

Ferguson, who won 38 trophies during 26 years in charge, watched from the stands in his new role as a club director, but United could not build on their win at Sunderland last time out.

It was the first time United had failed to win in successive league home matches for six years. They have 11 points after eight games and have suffered three defeats. At the same point last season United had been beaten twice but were third with 18 points.

"I am disappointed because we wanted to get a bit of momentum going today and we weren't able to do that," said Moyes.

Manchester United drew 1-1 with Southampton on Saturday. They presently stand at the center of the league rankings only 11 points.

Sports / Arsene Wenger Agrees To New Arsenal Contract Till 2016 by Napolitano(m): 11:43am On Oct 17, 2013

Arsene Wenger has agreed the terms of a new Arsenal contract that will keep him at the club until 2016.

The Frenchman is set to formally sign the two-year extension to his current deal within the next few weeks.

The new contract will end the uncertainty surrounding Wenger's future and extend his Arsenal reign to a remarkable 20 years if it is honoured, by which time he will be 66.

Wenger retained the full backing of American owner Stan Kroenke and the rest of the board, even when he came under more pressure last season from disgruntled supporters than at any point in his Arsenal career, and he has now agreed in principle to remain at the Emirates Stadium.

Although Arsenal have not won a trophy since 2005, the board place far greater importance on his record of top-four finishes and success in navigating the group stages of the Champions League year after year.

Sports / I'll Fight Klitschko For $100 Million - Lennox Lewis by Napolitano(m): 11:17am On Oct 17, 2013

Lennox Lewis has told Russian promoters that he will come back to fight one of the Klitschko brothers for the biggest purse in boxing history. The 48-year-old, who is still the most recent undisputed world heavyweight champion, was offered $50million (£31.3m) in Moscow at the weekend while attending Wladimir Klitschko’s successful defence of his world titles against Alexander Povetkin.

Lewis responded by promising to return to the ring for $100m (£62.6m). The promoters are considering doubling their bid and Lewis says: “That is my price tag and it is under discussion.

“I have told them I can be ready in six months and I am in provisional training.” Lewis, in London to launch his new training academy for potential world heavyweight champions, is running in Hyde Park each morning.

He reports himself to be “already well under 136kg”. He weighed around 111kg in his prime. Lewis believes that in a fight next spring he can surpass big George Foreman, who regained the title at the age of 48, as the oldest world heavyweight champion of all time.

His price for coming out of retirement would give him the biggest pay-note in boxing history.

Floyd Mayweather holds that record having been guaranteed $41.2million for last month’s super fight with Mexico’s Canelo Alvarez, with his take expected to rise to $70million once all the pay-per-view revenue is accounted for.

Lewis was talking in terms of $50million when he last considered a return to the ring.

Now he says: “I said at the time that it will take $50million to get me out of my pyjamas but now I have to consider the value of my legacy of having retired as undisputed champion. That will cost them $100million.”

The older of the Klitschko brothers, now 42, who holds the WBC world title, has campaigned consistently for a return bout. And if that were to become his last fight before retiring to seek the presidency of his native Ukraine it would be worth an absolute fortune.

Lewis would prefer to fight Wladimir, 37, saying: “I beat Vitali so I would like to fight the other brother but we’ll see how it works out. I want to bring back the Sweet Science to heavyweight boxing.”

Boxers who came out of Retirement

George Foreman – After a decade out of the ring, he returned aged 38 and fought for another 10 years. He regained the IBF and WBA world titles he’d lost to Muhammad Ali 20 years previously by beating Michael Moorer in 1994.

Evander Holyfield – Quit in 1994 with a heart problem but returned after seeing a faith healer on TV. Last fought against Brian Nielsen in 2011.

Riddick Bowe – Retired at 28 to join the US Marine Corps Reserve but quit three days into training and returned to the ring seven years later. His last fight was in 2008, when he was 41.

Ricky Hatton – Quit after defeats by Floyd Mayweather in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2009 but returned in 2012 to face Vyacheslav Senchenko, who stopped him in eight.

Sugar Ray Leonard – Retired four times from 1982 and 1997.

Sports / Novak Djokovic And Serena Williams Win 2013 China Open by Napolitano(m): 5:07pm On Oct 07, 2013
Novak Djokovic of Serbia beat arch-rival Rafael Nadal 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to win his fourth title at the China Open.

The match marked the first loss this season on hard court for Nadal, who has won 10 trophies in 2013 including the French and US Opens.

Despite the defeat, the 27-year-old Spaniard will return to the top spot in the ATP Rankings on Monday for the first time since June 27, 2011.

Unlike the three and a half-hour marathon US Open final in September, Djokovic stunned Nadal with a quick win in the China National Tennis Stadium.

"I needed this win today. I really wanted to get my hands on the trophy and win against Nadal, who has been the best player so far in 2013," said Djokovic.

With the packed fans chanting and clapping for both players, Djokovic's aces in the tenth game were just too fierce for Nadal to return. Djokovic soared to the air after he sealed his first win against Nadal in recent six months with another love game.

"This afternoon, (Djokovic) he was too strong for me," sighed Nadal. "He was able to hit all the balls where he wants to hit.

"When that's happening against a player like Novak, you are dead. That's what I was looking for, actually, to get that positive energy on the court of sharing the court with somebody, the team spirit," Nadal said.

Top seed Williams defeated No. 8 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2, 6-2 to take her 10th WTA title of the year, the first player to achieve the feat since Justine Henin in 2007. It was her 56th WTA title.

“Everyone is beatable, I think, at some point. I know I am,” Williams told reporters. “Everyone is a threat, you know. I don’t feel like I’m above anyone. I’m just playing and doing the best I can, that’s all I can do.”

Sports / Klitschko Successfully Defends His Heavyweight Titles Against Povetkin - Oct 5 by Napolitano(m): 12:49pm On Oct 06, 2013

Oct 5.
Wladimir Klitschko may divide opinions, but the Ukrainian knows how to win a fight as he retained his WBO, IBF, WBA and IBO heavyweight titles with a unanimous decision over Alexander Povetkin in Moscow.

The 37-year-old's title reign of more than seven years became the second-longest in history, but even though he still has to continue his dominance for another five years to catch up with record-holder Joe Louis, Klitschko remains a cut above the rest as he saw off former Olympic champion Povetkin to end the Russian's unbeaten career run.

The jabs of Klitschko and his defensive strategies may not be appealing or entertaining to most audiences, but Povetkin, who Klitschko regarded as "his best opponent", was unable to find a way past him.

Bagging a career-high $17.5 million compared to Povetkin's $5.8m, Klitschko hurt his opponent in the opening round with a left hook at the conclusion of it, despite the best efforts of Povetkin to get inside Klitschko's defence.
A short left hook from Klitschko ensured Povetkin fell to the canvas for the first time in his career in the second round, and by taking the third round Klitschko was in total command of the bout.

Klitschko was landing the heavier blows and managing to duck Povetkin well, and the latter struggled to make an impact as Klitschko held him mostly throughout a scrappy fifth round.

With Klitschko in a comfortable position, the Ukrainian turned up the heat in the seventh round by dropping Povetkin three times, beginning with a left-right combination. Somehow, Povetkin was able to get to the end of the round, but at this moment Klitschko was a long way in front on points and Povetkin required a knockout to get the win.

Klitschko was docked a point in the 11th round for throwing, but it made no difference to the outcome as he closed out the victory, with all three judges scoring the bout 119-104.

Sports / Faith And Football: Soccer Stars Who Are Devout Christians by Napolitano(m): 11:42am On Oct 06, 2013

Out of the bunch there are many footballers that are christains, and though all cannot be mentioned we can do our best to highlight some of the devout, who in some way bear witness in and out of the pitch. Also, who would most likely spend their Sunday mornings in the house of God.

Didier Drogba

Drogba might not seem all virtuous on the football pitch, but he does witness to his faith while playing, both by crossing himself every game and praising God when he scores. And unlike many footballers, he actually puts his money to good use, establishing the Didier Drogba Foundation, which provides education and healthcare support to African children.

Anton Ferdinand

Early in the season, Rio’s younger brother Anton “came out” as a Christian in an interview with The Daily Telegraph. In the interview he tells of his aim to start up a prayer group at his new club QPR, having left an evidently strong community of Christian players behind at his previous club Sunderland.

Javier Hernandez

Nicknamed Chicharito or “little pea”, Manchester United’s Mexican forward Hernandez is a wonderful witness, offering himself completely in prayer on the pitch before every kick-off.

Steven Pienaar

The South African Spurs/Everton player often has a t-shirt underneath his strip proclaiming “God is Great”, which he reveals whenever he scores – most famously in the picture above following his equaliser for Everton at Old Trafford this season. He is also very open about his faith on his twitter account @therealstevenpi

Kaka

The world's second-most expensive footballer is also one of the most religious. Indeed the Brazilian is so pious that he famously took off his shirt to reveal the message 'I belong to Jesus' after AC Milan won the Champions League in 2007. The Real Madrid star, who decided at the age of 12 that "faith decides whether something will happen or not," has donated millions to his Evangelist Church and plans to become a pastor once he retires.

Falcao

Falcao has taken world football by storm lately. Here we not only see Falcao a leader on the pitch, but away from football he is head of a church youth group named Locos por Jesus. The goal-gobbler is a devout Christian.

Park Chu-Young

South Korean star Park Chu-young is known as a devout believer. Living Light News noted: “The striker, who writes ‘Jesus is Christ’ next to his name in autographs to fans, kneels in prayer after scoring. This is a sight which is becoming increasingly common.”

The article quotes an interview with the player from The Guardian: “The first and main reason why I play is to evangelize people. It would make me happy if just one person became interested in Christianity because of me.”

David Luiz
The Chelsea footballer, who has links with Brazilian organisation Athletes for Christ, has never hidden his Christian beliefs and says his faith gives him strength and inspiration. He was famous at his previous club, Benfica, for stickers on a van that he used to drive to training – one saying ‘Christ is life’, and the other ‘God is Faith’ and later on praying for fellow teammate Torres live on TV.

There are so many others, who are also worthy of mention like Tim Howard, Zé Roberto, Mancini, Lúcio, Edmilson, Sylvinho, Bordon, Legrottaglie, Cris, Mertesacker, Boateng, cristianos, Essien, Malouda, Cicinho, Edu, Ceará, Marcos Senna, Daniel Alves, Luis Fabiano, Lee Young Pyo, Adebayor, Kuyt, Gignac, etc

Culled from various articles and blogs.

Sports / Klitschko To Defend Title Against Russian Alexander Povetkin On Oct 5 by Napolitano(m): 7:22pm On Oct 04, 2013

MOSCOW -- Heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko is confident he'll put an end to Alexander Povetkin's undefeated record when he defends his WBA and IBF belts against the Russian on Saturday.

After open training sessions on Wednesday, Klitschko (60-3, 51 KO) said he came to Moscow to win.

"That's what I will do on Oct. 5," Klitschko said. "Believe me, I will do everything for my victory."

However, Klitschko made it clear he would not underestimate Povetkin.

"He hasn't lost or drawn a fight and was never knocked down," the Ukrainian said. "So, I think the night will be a complicated one -- for those who will watch, as well as for Alexander and me. Each sportsman has his chance and each of us will try to capitalize on it. How, we will see it."

Povetkin (26-0, 18 KO) avoided the usual pre-bout banter, saying he was prepared for the fight.

"There's no need for extra words," Povetkin said. "I could have said that I would bury him or something like this. But you will see it on Saturday."

The WBA heavyweight belt became vacant when Klitschko was elevated to "super champion" status in 2011 after beating David Haye. Povetkin became the mandatory challenger for Klitschko when he beat American Hasim Rahman last September.

A sell-out crowd of 14,000 is expected to attend the match at Olympic Stadium.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Chelsea Made Me An Offer - Alex Ferguson by Napolitano(m): 8:29am On Oct 04, 2013

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that he was once offered the position of manager of the Chelsea FC when the club was purchased by Roman Abramovichin 2003.

Ferguson says he was approached to replace Claudio Ranieri at Stamford Bridge when Abramovich arrived in England, but the offer was dismissed immediately.

"They used an agent to approach me when Abramovich first took over the club and I said no chance," he said in an interview on American TV.

Sir Alex ended his Manchester United career in May after 26-and-a-half years at the Old Trafford. During his time, he won 38 trophies with the club, including 13 Premier League titles.

But the 71-year-old Alex Ferguson reaffirmed confidence that the Red Devil's new coach, David Moyes is capable of achieving success at Old Trafford, and reaffirmed his decision to retire from the game.

"United are in good hands with David Moyes. He will be fine. He's a good manager," Ferguson said.

"I'm not interested in managing again or getting myself worked up about Manchester United's results.

"You would be throwing your money down the drain if you put any money on me coming back as a manager. I made my decision. The timing was perfect. There is no way back for me now. I've got a new life. I want to go to the Kentucky Derby and the US Masters, the Melbourne Cup. I want to visit vineyards in Tuscany and France."

Sports / Man Utd's David Moyes To Get £100m Spending Fund Ahead January Transfer Window by Napolitano(m): 6:45pm On Oct 01, 2013

Manchester United boss David Moyes is to be handed a £100m fund shower by the club's owners to avert a nightmare scenario of the Red Devils finishing outside the top four and failing to qualify for 2014/15 Champions League.
Moyes will be given the funds ahead of the January transfer window. Targetsd within his radar include Everton's Leighton Baines and Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.

The Glazer family, which owns Manchester United, do not share the view of some excitable United fans who are already asking if Moyes was the right man to succeed Alex Ferguson, with the club languishing in the bottom half of the table after six games.
"The Glazers' willingness to back the Scot in January reflects an understanding that the first transfer window for Moyes... was always going to be difficult," explains The Guardian. "Beyond this, the owners recognise that the Premier League has become far more competitive this season."

According to the Daily Telegraph, Manchester United's owners "remain comfortable with the club's immediate prospects and the ability of Moyes and his players to overcome their dismal start to the season, but there is also an acceptance at Old Trafford that the squad left behind by Sir Alex Ferguson is badly in need of new blood".

"United's shortcomings in midfield have been well documented and several players who provided a bedrock of success for Ferguson are well into their thirties," it adds, suggesting that Rio Ferdinand could be the first casualty of the new regime.

The challenge for Moyes will now be to identify and secure his transfer targets.

Sports / Arsenal's Owner Kroenke Hopes To Win EPL by Napolitano(m): 3:17pm On Sep 28, 2013

Arsenal's American owner Stan Kroenke has affirmed support for coach, Arsene Wenger and admitted his desperation to win the Premier League title.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, the Gunners' largest shareholder, expressed belief that Wenger will extend his Arsenal contract when it expires at the end of this season. Wenger, so far has indicated he'll address the matter at a later date.

"There's no one I feel more strongly about and I think he is doing a great job," said the Kroenke. "We are proud of him, proud of the club, the way the club is run and how it holds itself out to the world."

"I had my son and a bunch of his friends at the training ground. A couple of them are NBA players," he said. "We were standing out in the rain watching. It rained like hell. This was going on for several hours. I was getting worried about players getting hit by lightning and Arsene was out in the middle of it. He's out there coaching every day."
Nonetheless, the fact remains that a club of Arsenal's stature have now gone eight-and-a-half years without a trophy and it's a decade since they last lifted the title.

Kroenke confessed he's anxious to see the club crowned league champions. "There would be nothing more thrilling," he said. "I'm not getting any younger. It's something I would like to achieve. I've done it a couple of times in the US [in American Football and basketball] and it was unbelievable."

Kroenke also believes the signing of Mesut Ozil will go a long way in helping Arsenal top the league. "What a great player," he said. "His spirit is great... We stayed in close touch as we went through the process. Everyone wanted to get him, other teams wanted to get him and to get him here is fantastic."
