Long overdue. The level of filth and environmental degradation in that area is something there. Just a little rainfall, you'll see feaces and all sorts of rubbish being transferred by flood to saner neighbouring properties. I wonder how people survive there.

Politics / GHANA PLANS TO EXPORT POWER TO NIGER by Nicols(m): 4:30pm On Sep 22, 2023
Ghana plans to export electricity to Nigeria.

Aghogho UdibyAghogho Udi 1 day ago in Energy, Industries

Ghana is actively strategizing and implementing policies and initiatives to advance its power sector to achieve “100% universal energy access” and potentially export electricity to its “big brother” neighbour, Nigeria.

Mr. Hanson Monney, the Head of the Generation and Transmission Unit at the Ministry of Energy in Ghana, conveyed this during his presentation in Lagos on the 2nd Day of the Nigeria Energy Leadership Summit.

Monney highlighted that Ghana has already achieved a remarkable 80% to 85% universal energy access within its borders through robust policy formulation and implementation.

In his words,

“So, we are working on all these things to make sure that the power system of Ghana continues to be as good as it is or even better, and then, maybe, we can be exporting more to our big brothers in Nigeria when the grid is finally settled.
So, ladies and gentlemen, this is an overview of the Ghana power system and challenges.”
This statement comes in the wake of Nigeria, Africa’s largest nation and leading oil producer, experiencing its second national electricity grid collapse, resulting in a complete blackout for homes and businesses.

In contrast, Ghana is actively pursuing various energy options, including grid energy, mini-grids, and solar-dominated renewable energy, to achieve “Universal access to energy by 2024” as directed by the country’s President.

Challenges of Ghana’s electricity industry
Monney acknowledged that achieving universal energy access in Ghana, especially in remote islands, riverside, or lakeside communities, presents significant challenges due to geographical constraints. To address this, he noted,

“So, now, we are trying to scale our renewable energy access, and that is how we have planned in 2022 to scale up our renewable energy program.”
Tariff problem
One of the foremost challenges in Ghana’s power sector is financial sustainability, as the government grapples with mounting debts and excess capacity procurement.

Monney stated,

“There is so much debt that the government has to shore up to make sure that the system is afloat because we have procured a lot of excess capacity, which comes with attendant costs. So, these financial challenges require some policy actions to eliminate legacy debts.”
High electricity tariffs are also a significant concern in Ghana, and Monney expressed the importance of making electricity more affordable, especially for industries.

He explained, “We saw that in Ghana historically.

These industries have been subsidizing the residential sector, and it should be the other way around. Industries should remain viable so that businesses can thrive.” Monney indicated ongoing efforts to rationalize tariffs to rectify this issue.

Gas supply challenge
Additionally, Monney highlighted the issue of gas supply security in Ghana and expressed gratitude to Nigeria for consistently supporting their gas supply needs.

He noted that while Nigeria provides gas from the east, more measures are necessary to ensure a consistent fuel supply.

Currently, Ghana is facing an 80-day shutdown of its gas supply, significantly affecting the power sector.

Despite these challenges, Monney affirmed that the Ghanaian government is actively taking steps to address them and continue advancing the electricity sector in the West African nation.

He emphasized Ghana’s holistic approach, involving collaboration among regulators, the private sector, and various stakeholders, and mentioned the existence of an “Integrated Power Sector Master Plan” to consolidate long-term plans for the sector.

SPOT ON! I am Not Wike's fan, and this is mainly because of his awkward personality and the role he played during the last election but when it comes to performance, you really can't compare him with his Lagos counterpart. Please if you are reading this and you earn 150k upward, please save and switch to solar.

I know the initial capital investment can be high, but try. In my case, I saved for 6 months to pay for the entire system. To add to that, I bought the batteries, inverter, and solar panels myself, then call a technician to install.

Correct guy.
I had 1m and was looking for a loan of 700k to meet up with the 1.7m quotation that my friend who happens to be a solar expert gave me until my wife suggested that we go to Alaba and buy the little we can get for the moment before prices go up. Surprisingly, we got everything that we needed for the installation within 1m. Everything apart from cable which I late bought from my neighborhood.

Get a solar system. I saw it coming so I was prepared for it. I took 5 kegs to the fuel station just a week before inauguration and got them all filled to the brim. That was about 160liters plus 80 liters in my tank. I laughed when people at the fuel station were just asking me if fuel was about to get scarce.

The money I should have used to complete my fence and do screeding/painting, I used it to install solar system. Since then, I have not touched any of my 3 generators. About to sell two of my them cos they are of no use to me.

You must not but 10kwh battery bank to use LifePO4.

You can ask/contact @Valto for 24v 200ah LifePO4 since you use two batteries.

Mind you, the fact that you use 3.5Kva does not mean that you have to limit yourself to such size of battery bank, you can go for higher/lower bank.

Very insightful @the bolded. Thanks.
I can see that everyone is recommending Valto whenever lifepo4 is mentioned. Will contact him asap.

Irrespective of the amount of battery you have, a 1.5hp submersible pump will shut down your 3.5Kva inverter. I dare anyone to try this and report back to the house. I have tried with a 3KW HF inverter before and it promptly shuts down. The pump initial power surge can get to almost 5kW. A good transformer (LF) based inverter may try, but I will like to see a report.

My inverter is a 3.5kva with 2x 200a gel batteries that are connected to 8 x 200w panels. I have been using it for my 1.5hp submersive water pump without any issue though I always make sure that I switch off all other appliances and I pump during midday when the sun is high. Is this a bad practice which might affect the system in the long run?

How much first depends on the following:

1) the capacity of lifepo4 battery you want, is it 75ah, 100ah, 150ah, 200ah, 220ah, 280ah, 320ah etc?

2) the number of lifepo4 cells you buy which is dependent on your inverter dc voltage such as 12v, 24v, 48v inverter system.

3) the make of the lifepo4, eg freestyle lifepo4 aka "anything you see, take", CATL, Eve, Lishen, REPT, etc

4) the grade of the lifepo4, there is grade A, B and C

5) the condition of the lifepo4; is it new or used or fairly used.

Lifepo4 is a just a battery chemistry with more number of cycles and higher energy density compared to the old school lead acid battery.

But if you don't want to bother your head with all these, there is a nairalander that is doing well in selling good quality lifepo4.

I recently got two 200a batteries for a start due to the urgent need for alternative energy and limited fund at the time of purchase and I'm running them off grid on a 3.5kva Felicity solar inverter with a plan to increase/upgrade the batteries and panels anytime soon. A friend told me that lifepo4 would be a better option. Last time I asked a dealer about lifepo4, he told me that they sell in packs and that the packages usually come in 5 or 10kva configurations which are far above the capacity of my inverter. What do you advise pls?

Your house is in the middle of the snake community.... you should be expecting them to explore in search of mates ... food ... and shelter. I would suggest you avoid the spraying and use of chemicals within your house and immediate surroundings. Instead of weed killer to get rid of the grass why not get someone to weed it? Chemicals do have long term effects ... most are carcinogens and should not be used around people... especially children.
I would suggest you keep a wide area around your house clean at all times... low grass only. If snakes are really plenty beyond... buy diesel and pour it along your fence line ... and around the wall of your house. Snakes do not usually cross diesel.

Thanks for the advise and suggestions. That was really insightful.

I had already sprayed herbicide in the last 4 days which is gradually killing the grasses, just waiting for them to dry up before i burn them. That is if this heavy rain in the island will subsidise.

Today, I was spraying the exterior part of the building when I sited this reptile right outside the dwarf fence that separated my property with an undeveloped plot of land at the back of my building. I quickly grabbed a stick and hit it before bringing it out to finish the job.

My next project is to ensure that i secure my property with a proper perimer fence while I continue with the routine fumigation.

We used to have monkeys coming inside of of the uncompleted flats to play and look for what to steal, but their access points have all been blocked, now we have more dangerous creatures to contend with.

If you know any pesticide that is more effective in killing or repelling these creatures please share.

So I got myself a sprayer and decided to do some DIY cos I can't trust anyone to do a more thorough job for me. The first time I fumigated the interior part of the building, the pesticide forced a little black snake to creep from the staircase landing area where we kept shoes and other items ....it jumped downstairs and then disappeared into the Bush. It was a very scary experience, I must confess and I imagined what would have happened if this thing had found its way inside any of the living rooms.

I met my kids discussing while pointing towards the direction of the septic tank. I just brought them back from school and they went ahead of me towards the entrance to the building while i was trying to repark.
When i looked towards the direction they were poing their fingers, I saw this little creature hiding under a wood but she forgot that other parts of her body were already exposed.

I grabbed a stick immediately. The first hit landed on her middle and the second on her head. Who knows the name of this snake and how dangerous is it?

Its a newly completed house but there are some uncompleted plots with pockets of grasses in the neighbourhood. I'm yet to complete the fencing as I'm still trying to recover from building and relocation expenses.

I earn about 450k. It can rise above 550k depending on overtime payment and other allowances. My rent in a 2 bedroom apartment is 350k. I pay 70k monthly allowance to my wife and I have three children in primary/secondary schools. I really do not have any savings due to high monthly bills. Fortunately, i am building my house in the Lekki-Epe axis with extra income from side hustle and that has been my consolation for now. When I was working as a security guard with a 45k monthly salary, i thought I'd be more comfortable if I have a job that pays me 100k monthly. Now i know better
