Don't you ever settle for a salvage car.  They aren't safe and in many states, not road worthy and ineligible for registration.  Besides safety and durability, it's not less than a tenth of its resale value.  Purchasing it at standard resale value is a complete reap-off.  This is the reason why they don't disclose it to you at purchase.

Worse off, you can't sell it to anyone when you want to get rid of it.

Don't dream of purchasing a salvage Mercedes.  I guess you can imagine what I am going to imply.  That Mercedes is prone to rust, even if you take care of it and could be so bad that its frame could fall off it's wishbone plates and the frame off it's suspension.  That is Chrysler for you.  Some dealership will treat rusts at no charge and some, out of your pocket.  Numerous electrical problems but not half as bad as 99 - 02.  You won't top this with a salvage title cause you won't be able to get rid of it.

Use AutoCheck or Carfax.  You can stop at a dealership and have them run your VIN or contact your insurance agent.  There is no charge for that but may not be detailed.  Never use CARMAX.

This vehicle has a JUNK title (damage is more than 75%).  It's been declared junk by the state of Florida and cannot be registered.  It's a TMU (total miles unknown) or actual mile unknown and shipped to Texas where it gladly got a new owner.

If you are considering this as a vehicle, I recommend you reconsider or get a second opinion.

Vehicle was in an accident in January 2005.  Vehicle was shipped to Benin in April of 2007.  nB - Vehicle for its age already has had suspension serviced.  This isn't a high velocity or performance car and would not require such till ten or more years have lapse.  There is a report of "suspension system" service noted in 2002.  Camry's have no suspension system but McPherson struts configuration.  Something just isn't right.    Take note of that.

Ivvie,
Thanks a lot man.But i need to know, what does JUNK registeration mean?

It is Junk Title and not Junk Registration.  A vehcle is salvage and deemed as 75% or more less than it's current market value.  A junk title (from the name implies) is of no value.  It probably at a junkyard or something waiting to be crushed.

Open up a thread and ask fellow nairalanders.  They will give you the appropriate answer to the question.  Do not consider buying such a vehicle.  It should not be an option.

This is a CAMRY with 4 or more owners within Florida.  It's a '98 with more than 210,000 miles.  It has a clean record.  It probably has gone through a colour change 'cause exterior colour was noted more than once.

This car is a total fraud.  It's been accidented, salvaged/rebuilt, probably been in flood, mileage has been rolledback and probably done its mechanical limits.  It has been categorised a LEMON.  Status shows that it was imported to Nigeria @10/18/2006.  It's a CAMRY.  The worst thing you can do is to ride a car that has been wet (flood or immersed).  It automatically becomes a mechanical coffin on wheels.  It is condemned and cannot be redeemed.

Why would you buy a Toyota with more than 210000 miles?  You are going to need to replace the engine because it's journals and bearings would have worn out and fragmented.  The lobes would be roundish when the engine would be taken apart.  It's designed for 10 years and 200000 miles.

Guys,

The lesson from this thread is that buyers should beware!! People are importing Salvaged and Junk Lemons into Nigeria. This is very sad. Many of these cars are not fit for any road and cause a lot of serious accidents, sadly.  Guys, before you buy a Tokunbo car, you owe it to yourselves and your loved ones to check it out. I challenge everyone advertising any car here to post their VIN numbers if they are confident that the cars are clean.

I will help as much as I can visit this site. Thanks Ivvie for a great service to the comunity of this website.  Smiley

Cheers

Hei, what up?

Mileage differs from car to car.  If you are buying an american car and approaching 80,000 it's almost gone and everything begins falling apart.  They aren't built to last that long.  I've been in a few, at 30 - 45000 miles, they ride uncivilised (I'm not referring to performance).  If you read between the fine printed lines, there is a disclaimer "Best in Initial Quality."

Toyota's are designed for 10 years 200,000 miles.  In today's technology, Toyota claimes 10 years 250,000 miles.  Mercedes before 96 built 50 years 1,000,000 miles and a free Merc. when you roll over (whichever comes first).  Volvo claims to roll on forever (which is far from true, 'cause I'm not experiencing that).   All these is categorised in engineering as Material Science and LifeCycle  (if you want to research it).  It's basically detailing mechanics of deformable bodies or components with time being a constant factor.

Depending on how much you want to spend - a Toyota at 70,000 miles is a good buy but scarce or pricey.  A BMW at 100,000 is a joke.  Be ready to buy another transmission because it's overdue and needs replacement.  It isn't servicable and sealed for life.

You will need to consider the previous owners.  I personally will not buy if it belonged to an ex-college student.  There will be a lot to fix.
