« on: December 17, 2007, 08:18 AM »

The movie was released in cinemas in the US 14/12/07 and stars Will Smith as Robert Neville the last man in the world.Ironically it was adopted from a novel by Richard Matheson with the same title!I saw the previews and thrailers and can't wait for the movie to make its opening in cinemas here in 9jah.It goes to show again just how good the veteran actor---Will Smith is Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy a breathtaking performance by the king of Box Office,we are only just getting over IN THE PURSUIT OF HAPPYNESS and here he  goes again with I AM LEGEND Cool Cool Cool

Well the movie is a interesting, but what i didn't like about it is that he(Will Smith) died at the end.

Here is a brief summary of the movie.

A genetically reengineered measles virus called Krippen Virus or KV, created as a cancer cure (by a doctor in a cameo by Emma Thompson), rapidly spreads and wipes out the population of the world by the end of 2009, leaving military virologist Robert Neville (Will Smith) the last human survivor in New York City and possibly the world.

The virus killed 90% of the people on the planet; fewer than one percent are immune. The remaining survivors were infected, initially exhibiting the early symptoms of rabies, but then degenerated into an animal state driven by hunger and blind rage. Neville is watched by these "Infected" people, who react painfully to UV radiation. They therefore avoid sunlight and hide in the dark underground, and in buildings (in groups called "hives" by Neville), swarming out at night. Dogs and rats are also susceptible to the virus. By 2012, Neville has not seen another normal human being since the virus' release three years earlier, and suspects that the Infected have succeeded in killing the remainder of the immune survivors. Neville is outnumbered by the infected and running out of time as he seeks a cure.

His isolation broken only by the companionship of his daughter's dog Samantha (Sam), Neville's life centers around a strict, daily routine of researching a cure, foraging for food and supplies, and security. He is regularly haunted by flashbacks of his wife's and daughter's deaths while being evacuated during the chaotic, militarily enforced quarantine of Manhattan in 2009. He also waits each day for a response to his continuous radio broadcasts to any uninfected survivors. One day his research appears to find a promising treatment, so he captures and treats an infected woman, but without apparent success. Shortly after, he is ensnared and attacked by the Infected. He escapes, but is forced to put down Sam because she has been bitten by an infected dog and begins to transform into one of them. Despondent over the death of Sam, Neville suicidally attacks a group of Infected that night and is nearly killed. He is saved by a pair of survivors — Anna (Alice Braga) from Sao Paulo, Brazil, and a boy named Ethan (Charlie Tahan) — who bring him back to his fortified home in Washington Square Park. Anna and Ethan, immune like Neville, survived the chaos aboard a Red Cross evacuation ship. Hearing Neville's broadcasts, they have come from Maryland with plans to take him with them to a rumored survivor colony in Vermont. Anna tells Neville that God sent her to Neville to bring him to the colony. Neville refuses to believe her, saying that everyone is dead.

The Infected attack the house that night and overrun its defenses. Neville, Anna, and Ethan retreat into the basement laboratory, sealing themselves in with the Infected woman on which Neville was experimenting. Discovering the last treatment has been successful afterall, Neville quickly draws blood from the patient and gives the vial to Anna, telling her it contains the cure. He then pushes Anna and Ethan into a coal chute. Neville sacrifices himself just as the leader of the Infected breaks through, killing him and the attacking Infected in the laboratory with a hand grenade.

Surviving the explosion, Anna and Ethan escape to Vermont and locate the survivors' fortified colony. Anna gives the cure to the guards. In the voice-over, she states that Neville's cure enabled humanity to survive and rebuild, establishing his legend.

Watched it yesterday and for it was not all that. It gets 5/10

All that build up and it kind of just whimpers out in the end.

Once again Will Smith has been in a film that will not gather any critical applause.

got it a few days ago via usenet on alt.binaries.movies.xvid (don't worry seun its not a link) dvd quality. have read the novel before so heres my take on the whole thing.

in the novel (which i can share as pdf if anyone cares) the darkseekers are "normal" vampires, and the dominant factor was neville's psychological atmosphere and his perception of things, the silent city was not as stark as in the movie. i believe that in the film the city, the silence, the echoes and the threat of something in the shadows was more harrowing than diving into neville's mind as presented by matheson. what i enjoyed more was the sweet irony of a silent, dead, dark new york much more than will smiths excellent performance or the sometimes shabby cgi effects.

however much i enjoyed it, i do have some misgivings about the whole movie. perhaps someone can clear it up:

1. neville seemed surprisingly calm after only three years of losing his family, friends and everyone else. he cut his hair neatly, cleaned his house and cars, groomed his dog, wore an apron, made jokes and watched movies, come on now! he ought to be portrayed as very near the edge, suicidal, morose, desparing. i know i would!

2. he was fishing in a pond. a pool actually. shouldnt the fish all be dead after three years of someone not changing the water? wheres all the algae? don't tel;l me neville had enoufgh time to actually sanitize the water.

3. this one gets asked a lot. um how come the new york equivalent of water board was actually functioining? he was in the shower and he bathed his dog in the tub.  who filtered and pumped the water? hang on, there was no electricity in the city! all the PCNH/NEPA staff had turned into zombies! so who pumped the water?

4. the darkseekers had some semblance of intelligence, and yet they didnt know neville existed until he grabbed the head darkseekers shorty. after all the racket he made stalking deer, riding reclessly, shooting and a-whooping, you'd think they'd track such hot meat to its den.

5. ethan and his mother just casually showed up. at night. when the darkseekers, millions of them, throng the streets after sundown. even neville-armed and with garlic- locked himself up. how did they even get there? werent all the bridges supposed to be blown up? or where did the ship anchor?

6. was he running on generator or batteries? if its gen, how come its so quiet?

8. the scene where Fred The Mannequin was used as bait (by whom? the darkseekers or neville) the dummy actually turned its head and stared at neville. it moved! if you don't believe me watch it again, at the point where he looked out the window of his car and saw the dummy. why did it move?

7. after the darkseeker unleashed the dogs and neville and sam finished them off, why didnt the darkseeker attack? one must assume he was watching his dogs get mauled.

8. the survivor colony. they just invented that one because there was none in the novel. and how come they didnt pick up nevilles radio broadcasts even though ethan's mum did? canada isnt that far from the US.

and the cgi was just passable. newyorkers come in all shape, color and sizes. but the darkseekers all look THE SAME.

whatever its inconsistences, its a great movie. we finally get to see new york silenced!

Its good that we all have our different opinions and views about the movie but seriously do y'all think the movie is in contention for an academy award next year?I know it slashed box office sales with millions stashed in its first week of release?thats Will a box office king, but com'on men this is the oscars we are talking about, not with all the movies that were released?whats your pick Wink Wink

Odadacare to edit? Tongue Oscars not Grammys.

I kindda agree with Neotenyone of reasons why i said it was kindda short
Though i think Will did a great job, I don't consider it his best performance.
Ohhh i think why he was a roving lunatic those years without human connection,
was prolly because a) he had a dog. . .(those of us who have connection to our pets know this)
b) he practiced his skills on those mannequins lol
c) most importantly he was determined to find a cureit was essentially what kept him going. . .

Odada, sure he is the reigning king of the box office
if there was to be a nomination, it will be for his acting, but he will not win this year. . .
Sorrywe have an eclectic list of probable nominations next year - Josh Brolin (i hope he wins), Casey Affleck (these are the favorites to win). . .Also a box office hit doesnt always ensure an oscar win
