sci fis hardly get any oscar nominations. what are they goiung to nominate in thjis movie? captivating premise, sure, good acting from will, certainly-but! what else? except maybe technical award for the CG new york gimmickry-but even that is so-so given the ludicrously conceived and badly animated baddies. if it was any other actor i will say the movie sux but really will did a good job given his mileage in the star system.

the likes of bucket list, juno, no country etc are the real contenders here. you know, character movies about the human condition, lots of dialog, teary-bleary feel-good stuff yada yada. me, i love sci fi.

ive seen lots of decent sci-fi/ horror movies with tons of oscar material that however sadly get sidelined. truth is, hollywood don't much like horror/ sci fi genre. have not seen jessica alba's The Eye yet but already its picking up some serious critique.

@Busta,
Girl i know right? I always try to see will's movies and he has been pretty lucky so far.  No absolutely horrendous choice yet (IMO) wellMIB:2 was hmmm! but not disastrous.

@Neotenyoh but there were some hoping for a nomination LMAOright!!
Most sci-fi movies get the technical nominationssame with horrors.
Have no urge to see The Eyehollywood does a crappy job of re-doing Asian good horrorsplus Jessica Alba can't act!

how can anyone possibly think big willy would get an oscar nomination for this, ok even if it was that good (overhyped IMO), the academy doesn't usually consider films like this. I saw the trailer for his next film can't remember the name again but it looked good.

@iice

technical nominations don't mean squat. the credit is for the geeky crew not the director or the actors or even the script writer. its too abstract. can you imagine the lighting guy walking off with a gong while the helmsman or leading star gets the piss?

you hit with with the hollywood-converting-asian-movies thingy. horror films are no longer made the way they were in hollywood. in horror you can do so much with so little as in the sixth sense where the mere suggestion of something harrowing gives one the goose bumps. but the focus now, sadly, is in "haunting" music score, computer effects and other crap. heck, ive seen great and genuinely frightening flicks with no score and no computers. only great acting and camera suggestions and dim reflections in the mirror.

i thought white noise was going to redefine the category but they killed it.

jessica alba (larf!). thank god she got a razzie! dreadful outing in fantastic four. she should of stuck to dark angel on tv.

um, Rambo, anyone?

@Neoteny LOL but am sure the lighting person would be ecstatic to get one of those golden statues.

Oh after the Ring, i just knew it would take hollywood a couple of tries to get the right combination.  I didn't even bother with white noise, i just had a feeling it wouldn't be all that.  I was going through one site for watching movies and majority of the movies on the list that came out last year were crap.  Same story which is, someone/a couple/friends go traveling/hiking/driving then they get kidnapped/snatched/caught by some psychos/nut jobs who torture/kill them.  I was like are you kidding me? That's all the movies that get released these days? All same stories with slightly different scenarios.  I think people thought hostel and saw were working and thought why not make 20 more movies like that? Undecided Huh

Really? She got a razzie? Hahahahahahawell she deserved that.  As sue storm, she totally sucked.  Very stiff.  Didn't watch Dark Angel (Not really a fan of all that women kick ass shows).  I thought she couldn't act then, still can't act.

Sorryyou just need shades to read with my font Tongue Cool Grin

girl i need goggles with ultra violet filters to read your font.

yup yup. slasher movies present oiled-and tanned teens and young uns stupid enough to get stranded/lost/kidnapped and then it tapers to humdrum sicko nonsense. the trajectory of most movies these days is easily predictable. from the opening scene you can tell how its going to end, how much of your day its going to ruin and how you can't get  back 1 hour 45 minutes. saw and hostel ought to be confined to the dustbin of film history. sadly some people like them.

<yawn>

yes, she got a razzie alright, as eddie murphy did for every single character he played in norbit. i think he did that movie deliberately to be damned.

yes, all same movies with slightly different scenarios. though if you looked well, its the same scenario. all they did was shift the camera angle.   Grin

I'll put that on santa's list then - googles for neoteny Tongue

There are those movies that just make you feel like what has the movie world come to but you get to see some good ones and think thank goodness, not everything is shitty.

Yeah i remember eddie's razzie ahahahahaha.  He has been overdoing the multiple character bit.  And since his disappointment at the oscars, he has lost focus on things.  I don't bother watching his movies anymore.  It's just so sad.  Halle also won a razzie years ago lol.  I think she's a beautiful woman but can't act that much.

@earth realm
hey dude. howz the realm.

catwoman. damn. is it a deliberate policy that most movies based on licensed material sux? you know what i feel? hollywood has been taken over by a bunch of prehistoric aliens, while the talented folks have moved on to indie films. surprisisngly the ongoing writers strike doesnt seem to affect no-action, non-sci fi movies. recent dramas are good. not as godd as they could have bin but still good. i think morgan freeman has one of his best turns in bucket list. ellen page did good in juno. its silly how a smart girl like juno could be careless enouh to get preggers but i guess every movie is entitled to a human lapse or two.

catwoman has millions of lapses, so much so the whole thing is a travesty. halle berry is many shades like beyonce: sex appeal, terrible talents.

seen the preview of vantage point? i love the trailer though ive learnt from minority report to take trailers with a grain of salt.

I am a Legend is just another vampire movie. I came up with "what was that about?" after watching it. In fact, the only attraction there is Will Smith, who is incidentally a huge box office draw. The story line was boring and lacks creativity. The producers just cashed in on Will Smith's image (which is why the movie sold very well).

Look at this for example, The whole of new york (or wherever the film is set) is meant to be deserted and turned into a jungle with animals roaming the streets. Where did Will Smith get electricity and state of the art equipment to conduct his experiment to find a cure for the plague? If he was cut off from the world, where did he get supplies?

Honestly, 5 minutes into the movie, I wanted to yawn and sleep.

Actually thought Juno wasn't all it was hyped to be.  Ellen page sure did good but i don't see any 'wow' in her performance.  I think many could have pulled off her role there.

@Neotenyyou sound tired of hollywood, i don't blame you, too much crap these days.
I still adore it even when they disappoint me.  But every once in a while, you get a few good movies.

@albato

i wouldnt call IAL "just another vampire movie", and the story crtainly was captivating. the movie is a remake of two other remakes which in turn are based on a very well written novel (though all movies bear little resemblance to the novel except perhaps omega man) . the concept of one man left alive as a hum,an after a ravaging epidemic is to me interesting. sometimes i close my eyes and imagine myself a robert neville. imagine how silent the world would be, how lonely one could feel. its a bit like 28 days later except in that film they went to the country side.

perhaps five minutes in to the movie, you DID ywan and sleep.

i don't agree with you theres no creativity. its creative the way they presented a dead new york. they coulkd have done better with the ending and some of the lapses, because those are the film's weakest points.

of course 28 days later was actually a ripoff of IAL, not the other way round. the novel and early movies were there fisrt.

my only problem with IAL is the slight laxity on portrayal of neville's mental atmosphere and the poorly rendered baddies, as well as the shoehorned ending about the colony of survivors. of course, his sacrifice would mean nothing if there were no survivors to save the infected, but i much prefer the ending in the novel, in which neville' last thoughts, on seeing how the darkseekers feared him, were 'I AM LEGEND'.  that is a classic ending. and in the novel his mental state was very credible.

in the movie its safe to assume he pilfered his equipment in the daytime from the city hospitals and businesses. lord knows there are enough of those in new york, and 3 years is not enough to finish suppiles given the vastness of the city. as for electricity, in the novel he ran off gen, so we can assume he did too in the movie though i would have loved to hear its chugging in the background (which could alert the vampires to his presence?). my only gripe is who pumped him water?

@iice

juno is very much like IAL: the lead characters performance sort of redeemed the movie. thats not to say its not enjoyable, but its hardly groundbreaking stuff. ellen page did good, i love her lines. but she still was dumb to get pregnant.

gothika had promise, just like darkness, but the plot is so jejune and her acting so flimsy i wanted to hate her. thye should have cast tandy newton for that role.

hollywood is shifting its focus and going the route of bollywood: quantity over quality. just about any script is bought and movied and they project how much we will pay for the privilege of being assaulted with tripe. somehow the independents and some international players are making better movies.

lots of well-trailered stuff didnt live to the hype: avp2, national treasure 2 (ed harris did good), rambo, war, beowulf, etc.

hope vantage point holds up. i like the plot already.

My God! Listen to yourself. Contradictions. I said the film lacks creativity and you just confirmed it. Read the highlighted section of your statement above. A film that is a rip-off (re-make) up to three times is creative in your opinion? How many times have wee seen this "single bloke stranded in a lonely neigbourhood" setting? What is creative in washing a pig and dressing it. It remains a pig. I think the film has effectively launched a platform for a good video game. Watch out for it. You know what I mean. One of those gun totting, blood thirsty games where one guy shots up the world in order to save it.

Thanks you at least agree with me there was no logical reasoning in the settings.

Anyway, this is the trialer for Will's latest flick. Its called Hanckock. Here he is doing what he does best. Comedy: http://www.octoclick.com/video/movies/movie-trailer-hanckock-will-smiths-latest-movie.html

the whole point of remakes was to infuse CREATIVITY to an existing project. you are mixing CREATIVITY with ORIGINALITY. none of the other remakes projected new york as in the current flick does. its creative the way it was done because it works.

you can wash a pig and dress it. and i can wash a pig and dress it in a CREATIVE way. no contradictions here.

it seems robert neville in I Am Legend was running off generators afterall. after the lions and deer scene when he returned home, under a cabinet are a series of portable Honda generators. they look like the standard 900VA-1Kva two-stroke affair we see around all over the place in naija. i don't know how those could power the entire house, the floodlights outside, the lab equipment and probably the water heater because in the shower scene he was bathing in hot water.
