Masters Degree Or Work Experience To Work In Nigeria
« on: December 18, 2007, 12:02 PM »

Hello Nairalanders,

Please i'll like you guys/ladies to please contribute to this discussion.

Which will companies in Nigeria prefer a candidate have:

Both candidates are same age, same degree(Computer and Electronics Engineering) from a very good University in UK:

1.A candidate with a 2:1 degree, Masters Degree and 2 years work experience (contracted with 2 different companies)

2.A candidate with a 2:1 degree, 4 years work experience (contracted with 5 different big companies)

well, i actually think that for employment sake in Nigeria,Candidate B stands a better chance because of the fact that he is going to bring to bear much more experience to the organisation unlike his counterpart.the Uk degree is preferred because of the level of  international networking one garners by studying with people of different backgrounds and not necessarily the knowledge or experience  obtained. So in my own point of view,Candidate B Sstandfs a better chance of being employed.

No 2 guy spent 4 years in 5 jobs. This means he spent less than a year on each Job. No 1 guy spent an average of 1 year per job. A lot of things will be considered here. The 4 year work experience guy may probably not be able to hold down a job. Not many employers want such people.

Again his number of years of experience will only add up if he worked for the same kind of company or related company.

So if I am an employer, I will go for the candidate A. He has two years experience with an advance degree from the UK. With an average ability, he will make up for the 3 years in a year.

Candidate B stands a better chance in my own opinion too, because most of our organisations prepare ready made stuff

Length of the contract between the two candidates was different

, paper certificate is good but it doesnt get the work done
what the company needs in a person that will do the job

if the work experience is relevant in the new job, its better than the masters degree

Ndubest, yea paper certificate in nigeria is nothing but paper cert from UK means a lot because they make feel what is out there. They have productivity oriented education. Do not forget the Masters guy also has two years of work experience not just a green.

hi Carpenter

Will you be able to knock the pieces of experience together? It will need your expertise to accomplish that.

If this guys has been in one job for 4 years, it is a different thing all together.

A.
First job was permanent and was there for more than a yr,second job was contract

B.
First job was a junior role and short contract, and the rest of the contracts was usually 3 or 6 months contracts but mostly got extended.

They've both got solid reference from each of the company they've worked for

company valued most someone in the field with years of experience than a master degree with little experience cause he/she need to learn again from the older workers in which companies dislike, a master degree would have been more appreciative if he/ she is on the productive section and being back-up by experienced colleagues but since there's competition in the field it will be hell there.
  years of experience matters most.

I assume that they both have related experience in their field but I will also consider the responsibilities they handled. If candidate B was moving up the responsibility ladder in between the jobs, he will stand a better chance. Of course in most contexts, a MS degree is equivalent to about 2 years of work experience.

The more experience you have, the better your chances. But it's always better to have a long standing experience in one company.
From the example you gave, they both stand almost equal chances but if candidate B had had his experience in a reputation company for 4 years, then, he'll definitely be the prefered candidate.

To be honest, candidate 2 is a mess.  4 years - in and out of 5 different jobs!

School doesn't teach you what you need for industry standards.  No organisations/affliliations makes you a bad candidate for what you worth.  Candidate 1 stands higher.  You should spend at least 2 years before switching jobs.

He was a contractor with all companies i.e he was not permanent.Once the project is over it is either you get assigned a new project(contract extended) or you look for a new job.

Most companies in the USA prefer choosing person with high numbers of experiences with Bachelor/Master degree and/or Technical/Medical/Teacher certifications than college degree with too little experiences.

CANDIDATE A IS FAR BETTER
WHEN You HAVE MASTERS IT IS BEING COUNTED MORE IN TERMS OF EXPERIENCE
THE RULE IS E.G IST DEGREE WITH 3 YEARS EXPERIENCE BUT
MASTERS DEGREE WITH ONE YEAR EXPERIENCE
IF You HAVE FIRST DEGREE WITH TWO YEARS EXPERIENCE AND THERE IS ANOTHER MAN WITH MASTERS WITH ONE YEAR EXPERINCE
GO FOR MASTERS TO BE A MASTER OF THE JOB
IST DEGREE WITH 10 YEARS EXPERIENCE IS EQUIVALENT TO MASTERS DEGREE WITH ABOUT 7 YEARS EXPERIENCE
ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL -LONG LEG,BOTTOM POWER ,GOD FATHER ETC

If i were an employer in naija , i would actually prefer job experience but when you consider one or two years experience capped with a qualitative masters from a good university abroad which i believe is far more efficient and industry relevant in content that sounds like a good idea.

So eventually i would pick candidate A cause he's got both even though no. of years exp is lesser than the Bs.

i think both have good chances of getting the job but as an employer i will not employ based on their qualifications alone, since they are both well qualified, i will employ mostly based on what i think they can bring to the table, so i will say an interview with both will definitely determine who i will pick

Experince is the best teacher na so Oyinbo talk am, Well qualification also tells aalotexposure, in as much it is an international acquired degree it counts a lot to his side, but Experience couple with exposure will skyrocket ability to perform and proved result oriented,

So in conclusion, both still weight the same, home breed with a lot of experience and exposure to different activities, while the second 2yrs experience couple with international exposure and networks can also take you to another level,

But that can be achieved if the person posses CAN DO SPIRIT, that knows what he or she is doing, enough PALI  from  ILU OYINBO, without performance, so the two can perform your task, but detailed interview on their job role and definition will tell who is the best hand fit for the JOB not PALI

ABINIBI differs from ABILITY, that is the KOKO ORO
