Is My Self Esteem Guaranteed?

I have had this argument with some friends and i have been against the idea of father or even mother-in-law taking care of most of the wedding expenses because i see the danger of the groom losing his dignity. I'd rather get married without most comfort and have a say in my marital affairs, than allow my in-laws lavish money and i become a 'mumu'. There are cases of the man becoming 'slave' in the hands of the in-laws. I do agree that u have some wonderful rich in-laws, but still think i have to maintain my self esteem.
