About The ICAN/ATS Examinations
« on: April 09, 2006, 08:36 AM »

Nairalanders, do you know something, anything or everything about ICAN?  Its exams, fee, materials, requirements, past questions, duration, advice, experience,  its relationship with ATS?  Please, share it right here!  Thank to you all.

hi Le govo,

i will try and be brief here,
first ATS is for people that are not yet graduates. its has 3 stages 1, 11 and 111, the exam is usually written in MAR and SEPT each year
while ICAN is for graduates, its a professional exam and it also has 3 stages and written in MAY AND NOV each year

the relationship to ATS is that once you pass the ATS you can then be qualified to write the ICAN (remember its for non graduates)

the fees are based on the level you are writing - and its always advertised in the Newspaper, towards the exam period.

the materials are available from the various tutor houses and ICAN office (ie past questions and pilot

the duration is as a result of your successes.  However it takes approx. a yr and six months to qualify (if you pass each stage\diet---) TRUST ''Nigerian factor'' Angry
that is if the system will  ''let its people go''
.
However don't be discouraged, they have changed the syllabus and has a credit  system now which allows you to get a credit of what you have passed and re- write the failed one. so you have a better chnace now unlike before (because they have lost many students to ACCA- london, thats why the hurried change of the old system)

my advice is that u go for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Though just be ready to study very hard. the end justifies the means.

Anabib's given a low down but then u don't av to be a graduate before proceeding for the ICAN exams. My sister's not been to the university. She started wit ATS n is now in the  first stage of ICAN, about to write her exams in May. She even got a job in a bank with her ATS cert. With ATS, u can also get a direct entry into 200 level in the university.

Please can u recommend good text books and ICAN tailored materials for P.E. III exams. I intendĀ  studying on my own(for November Diet) since I'mĀ  in a state where there are no ICAN tuition houses. Your recommendation will really be of great help.

Thanks

Naijapikin,

Well for PE 3 exams its best you get the following textbooks

Financial mgt-- by Oye or (this guy at pye- can't remember his name)
financial reporting-- by kalu
Auditing--- I used my note, so u can get a photocopy of a most current note from someone and also read in line wt your syllabus. e.g ISAs and SAS
MDSC---- use ICAN past questions and tutor house lecture pack (WYSE in lagos)
Tax-- will get his name later, written by (SAFE) lecturer

Really, the secret is studying past questions and Ican pilot packs
and if u can get a photo copy of an Ican tutor house lecture notes, that would help streamline what you have to read.

Ican syllabus is wide, and they expect you to know all well, so get familiar with the happenings around you, issues etc especially for MDCS as it has no text book.

All the best!!!

Anabib thanks alot.

I was in a similar situation last diet-I had reference in M.A. Hope to make it this diet.

I will not have the time, due to work, to go to Lagos(I presume that's where I can get these materials) so can you please give me in detail full names of the authors and editions so that whoever I send will buy the right textbooks.

Thanks once again. I really appreciate your quick response.

Hi all!

I am currently studying for ICAN/ATS and intend schooling in Lagos probably UNILAG to enable me attend lecture centres close to me.

But going by the way things are in UNILAG, they frustrated me last session by setting cut-off marks for JAMB score after post-UME cut-offs which i beat.

I would really appreciate advice from my fellow Nairalanders, whether to go ahead with schooling in Lagos due to studies for ATS or to change Institution to somewhere outside lagos that would only rely on post-UME for admission. But how do i get good lecture centres there! or even know whether they exist?

I guess you'll have to search before making your decision.

Thanks Seun.

But any one in the house believe you can just read on your own for such exams without attending lectures. That is if there are no lecture centres available to you.

The ones i know of are: PYE close to Yabatech, WYSE, SAFE at Surulere close to Lagos State Polytechic, Gbaja, Surulere.

ATS 1 at SAFE is N13,000 FT, N10,000 PT including Question Packs for all subjects. While you can still get the Insight Past Questions (10 Diets) N1,000 for all subjects.

Hope you find these useful.

Goodluck !

HELLO All,
l graduated from the department of business admin and l am very eager to be chartered
l started the ast program while l was still in the university but couldn't write their exams not that it was difficult, but because then, all their exams do clash with my school exams. and now l have graduated and l still intend to become a chartered.
can anybody please tell me where to start because l have heard that since one is a graduate, there is no need going through the ast of a tin and l don't know if my discipline will give me the direct access to writing the exams or l still have some foundation programe to undertake.
l will really appreciate your contributions towards helping me achieving ,my dream
