Work On A Short Film
« on: December 31, 2007, 10:15 AM »

whats up nairalanders???

i am in search of young talented actors and actresses who can feature in a short movie i want to produce. i am interested in people who realise that there needs to be a change in Nollywood.

the short is intended to showcase each of our talents and to show the world that something international can still come out of Nigeria.

lets keep in mind that most of the internationally acclaimed film-makers did short films to show their worth before they became what they are rite now.

please interested people should contact jemit2002@yahoo.com.

sounds good, jemit,  definitely wish you all the best with this short!

i would love to take part, but since i'm not in Nigeria at the moment, that might be a bit tough,  i'm sure you'll find many folks willing to contribute in one way or another.

still, as i said in the "New wave" post, i would advise you not to go into this production thinking about your objective as "there needs to be a change in Nollywood." chances are that you are NOT going to change Nollywood,  and frankly, Nollywood does not care about you or your proposed changes (unless you can demonstrate that your changes are going to bring in a lot more money!)

just make the film you want to make, and don't worry about Nollywood. and don't worry about what "internationally acclaimed filmmakers" did either, because you have to deal with YOUR reality: you live in Nigeria, not wherever these internationally acclaimed filmmakers live and work. it's up to you to devise a way to progress within that reality.

Why make a short movie?   It's purely for experience right?  Do you recommend that to others?

I don't agree with guys saying you cannot do anything to change nollywood. I will say that your main purpose and aim is not to change nollywood. but this is it. IF WE SET THE PACE THEY WILL FOLLOW. it might be hard but they will follow. If you study film history you will know that alomost every decade a new wave starts tak about french new wave, film nior, new wave of the 70ties, blockbuster ets. some people started it. talk of steven spieldberg, he is one of the blockbuster pioneers in the US. The problem with nigeria is this individuality problem, stuffs like "i don't care whats happening in my society, as long as i'm fine they can go to hell". we cannot see whats wrong and not try to make amends. I believe soon we will make a differience.

man, you're talking about the French New Wave but this ain't Paris, i'm not Truffaut and you are not Godard!

the French New Wave was very different from the Nigerian situation because while in France, the institution of cinema is regarded as "the seventh art," in Nigeria, it's not viewed as an art at all. and the industry is run by people who don't give a good god damn about "art" either way!

Nollywood is fueled by businessmen; the only thing that impresses them is profit.

if you make a movie that makes millions of dollars, THAT will change Nollywood. MAYBE.

but making a high-quality short film with "international standards" is not going to change the bottomline of the marketers who run Nollywood. unless you can prove to them that YOUR way of making movies is going to increase their profit, they really, really do not care about you or anything you have to offer.

and really: why should they?

like i said: if you want to make a quality film, i commend you for that. do your thing, but don't worry about changing Nollywood. because you won't.

Why do you think we can't. We might not be able to but we will lay the standards and open peoples eyes to what can come out of nigeria. soon we will sweep them off. I know one thing and that is that we wont join them even if we can't beat them. but all the same we will do our best to change things by setting a good standard. The money aspect can be a way (thanks for the suggestion combs). I just know that I will not join the train. I left Nigeria to study film because I don't want to join the train.

How can a movie make money if it is not a "good film"?
What you think is good, others might hate, and vice versa.

Nigerian movies of the moment may not appeal to everybody,
but they put food on the table for the people that make them.
That is what makes it an industry. And art films are boring, by the way.

Anyway, send me a mail if you need anything beyond actors for your film Wink

okay,  in this, at least, i kind of agree. with you.

as i have said several times (and blacklion has been saying elsewhere) the current crop of Nollywood producers do not give a damn about your "standards" as long as there are people willing to buy the movies they currently make. the only thing that will change them is if the audience demands better and decides to stop spending their money on mediocre product.

but as it stands, the current Nollywood fans choose instead to make excuses on behaalf of the producers even though they know the quality is crap. they seem to believe that this really IS the best that can come out of Nigeria.

if you can show the audience that much better IS possible--and that they should expect that--hopefully, it will put more pressure on the producers to step up their game.

but even then, it's not a sure thing. because your movie has got to be high quality, and ALSO make a lot of money--which is not easy to do.

ONE of the reasons that Nollywood movies are made in such a slipshod fashion is not because producers don't KNOW how to make a quality movie or don't want to--it's because a limited amount of money can be spent on them, because the economy is only so big: video clubs, pirates, etc. make it so much that there is a limit to how much money you can make from a movie.

so if you end up spending more than you can possibly make, then you are losing. and no producer wants to lose.

and that's why all the talk about Nigeria being "the third largest movie industry in the world" is a line of bullshit.

but anyway, my point is:

Quote
I WILL RATHER MAKE A GOOD FILM THAN JUST MONEY

ultimately, me too.

but Nollywood is not run or peopled by folks like you or I. and that's the reason you will NEVER change Nollywood. because you can make all the good movies you want, but Nollywood is run by people who are only impressed by money.

and frankly, on a realistic level: if your movies are not making money, how do you intend to sustain your career? how will you be able to make more movies?
