you can all go see my thread on zenith and their pay cut to see what i think of these banks and thier workers.  however, i want to say here that while you guys are saying all you are saying you have to look at the society they operate and get their workers from.  blame the banks as much as you like we deserve the bank we get. they are all the same

Nigeria in my opinion is a dishonest and very fraudulent society. notice i said that is my opinion and i don't know of anyone that do not like taking advantage of banks doing frauds and other get rich quick scams on a daily basis. if the banks allow you guys to come in and get out quick without checking your tellers and cheques properly i wonder what will happen.

i  come  in and out of Nigeria and i have been told you cant take anything into the bank too. that is the price you pay for being Nigerian and having the kind of mindset some of our people have. i used to be able to drive straight into my bank's premises that has been stopped too.

about 22yrs ago ( i mention this period so you know it is not anything new) a young cashier on a very busy day overpaid a school principal just 100Naira which was good money then. at the end of the day the guy couldn't balance his books so a call over was done of how he paid his cheques and other instruments.  the call over guy discovered he had paid out  10 x 20naira notes to a man that had a cheque of 100naira. in his defense, he was maybe 19yrs old,  an extremely busy day with loads of students paying  their school fees and  local govt.  workers taking their salary too.

we went to this man's village his wife told us outside the husband mentioned it  when she spoke ibo to tell the guy why we came he told us he didn't know what we were talking about.

some of you know the society is not a society you can take risk especially when it comes to money business.

when i arrived Europe, you could go into any bank and tell them you were friday monday they will open accounts for you and give you every facility they give to any son and daughters of the land. suddenly my people started coming in massively brought not just their lovely bodies but their twisted mind set too.  the banks here tightened up things for them too. all you hear today is people complaining about banks here too. every business tightens up when they see people trying to abuse privileges.  banking facilities are not rights but privilege.

unless we begin to call ourselves human beings and start behaving like civilized people we will have every area of the society like this.

mobile phones and internet connections are very cheap to own everywhere else in the world but in Nigeria the owners have to work fraud into their cost and what do you find higher bills.  some of you are going to come on here and talk of how lovely you all are which is okay and wonderful but the wider society is not like that.

blame the banks as much as you like we deserve the bank we get

Is anyone still banking with UBA?
I thought they're under lock n key (lol).
I use to bank with them but now, boy, that's a distant past.
My story is this:
When I was a nigerian student (I hail all una we still de kampus oh!) I was 100% broke. My skool was in Anambra state n the nearest UBA bank to my skool was in Owerri (if u've been to ANSU u'll know what I'm saying)
The poor ol' man in Lagos sent money to his son who was starving in d East. Three days later, I borrowed just the exact amount of money that would do for my transport, sure as hell that my money would have arrived, even if it boards Nigerian Railway. What a mistake!
I could not withdraw the money on getting to this bank, I had zero balance in my A/C.
It was a Friday so I slept in a Cafe, hungry and homeles
On the 4th day beign Saturday @ 10 am, my money "arrived" having spent 4 days on d road!
The following week, I went back to the bank and promptly closed my A/C with them.
If you talk about people still banking with UBA, I'm surprise.

you guys almost expect miracles in that society. you expect money transfered to be cleared 3days in Nigeria. and if i am not mistaken we are talking about only one full working day i between. wonderful.  what year are we talking about here?
thank Go you got it the fourth day ie 2 working days in between not bad

you guys want to destroy the banks and you go back to putting your money in the house again

Who's talking about putting money @ home rather than bank?
What I think this post attempt to do is to let UBA know they are performing poorly. Mind you, there are still good banks in Naija of which my present bank is one.

And who told you transfer takes more than 1 day in Nigeria to show up in an account when it's from same bank? within minutes, you can get your money once transfered from any bank in Nigeria except if something happens, but thats not what we are saying here, we are trying to compare one bank out of the rest 25 banks we have in Nigeria. (mind you, all the 25 banks we have in Nigeria have a capital reserve of 25 billion naira in their Kitty) so banks in Nigeria aren't poor or short of facilities. UBA (the scape Goat for today) is way below standard, thats why we have all brought the bank here to sacrifice and to show the rest banks what we would do to them if they are messing up.

calm down. i am not an advocate of poor banking. like i said just check my zenith write up you will see my opinion on them. however, you guys should stop complaining because the guys have to do a double check of everything they receive even from within internal transfers.

have you heard the word fraud before?.  by the way you didn't mention interbranch transfers in your earlier post.  up country transfers takes days anywhere in the world that was my point.

until we can get some injection for honesty into the system/ society i guess we are all going to put up with these shoody customer services.  not even employing you will cure the wahala.

i will tell one of their marketing top notch i know to read this thread.

i have an account with UBA. i have banked with them24yrs now. yes like other banks there are delays but they deliver the goods i need. even when their london branch here was closed i was still able to do most things i want by mails or phone.  i have account with other banks too and i get some troubles just trying to move money from one account to another soemtimes.

it is not about the systems they use it is the society they are trying to work in. anyway if you have enough money to make them feel you moving please by all means move it

Man, you are sounding too funny for my liking, anyways i understand your point, you are in the UK, and all they need to do is to keep up to the standard of the pther banks in Uk, thats why they are acting as if they are good.
But come to Nigeria and see, we are all complaining about them here in Nigeria, Not in Uk. queue for 4 hours and then you will know what we are talking about.
anyways i need to get some things done,  will be back later to look through the thread.

[color=#770077]It seems Tony Elumelu is your brother.  So please tell him to get his act together before the bank become a global flop!

UBA customer service and service delivery is minus zero! They treat you like a leper/ or that they are doing you a favour whenever you want to transact business with them. I went to their Okota branch recently to send money to someone in Ilorin via their Local Money transfer (as requested by the beneficiary otherwise you won't find me dead in UBA).  I waited for over one hour with no one ready to attend to me and no explanation given despite my enquiry on what is causing the delay.  When I choose to leave the bank without completing my transaction no one bat an eyelid!  Imagine a bank that did not care about earning instant commission!  I cannot recommend UBA to anybody, period

Elumelu thought his so called 'whiz kids' that were in the old STB will perform magic in UBA after the merger hence he sacked all the old UBA hands and replaced them with young-get-rich-quick bankers and contract operational staff that he's exploiting to the maximum.  Yoruba adage says "A kii fi owo ekun ra oja erin" You cannot use money made from sorrow to purchase commodity of laughter.  Demoralized staff cannot give the best service delivery.

Well, UBA has its good and bad, all depends on what branch you use, My UNILAG branch treats me well like am a king, but each time i go to the lawanson branch(the 1 very close to cole junction) to pay into someone's account. I come back with headaches. the queue-so mysteriously long, the staffs-all of them are rude. and there is this "go and look for N5 change attitude".
I was trying to make a 4755 payment one day and i had 4760 and i told the lady to forget about the N5, if you see her arrogant display, "Mr, go and look for change" i tell you, i made her regret it.
the only reason i still av an account with them is because i am always very busy, and i dont use the account for real transactions, i only use it for small small transactions

Febuary 2006: I walked into UBA Dugbe branch [Ibadan] to open a savings account. I was turned back. Why? My international passport was less than 6 months old. Never mind if I acquired the passport 5 months ago. What the heck.

I went to Zenith Bank Dugbe. I was told I needed N100,000 to open a saving account. I had only N10,000 in my pocket so I showed myself the way out.  Grin

On the advice of a friend,  I went to GTB Dugbe and opened a savings account within minutes. I have been banking with GTB happily ever after. My business banks with GTB too. Of course, my only problem with GTB is the recent stunt of disabling 3rd Party funds transfer on their Internet Banking platform.

My business uses UBA here in Ghana and I can say that their service in Ghana is great.

Someone stole a cheque leaf from my cheque book and I detected it. I called my account officer to alert him and also gave him the cheque no for him to make the cheque null and void. Two months later, the same cheque leaf was used to withdraw N35,000:00 from my current account with UBA. I later detected this and reported to their Sagamu branch where I was at that moment. To my surprise, they claim not to be able to detect the branch where the money was collected and the cashier that paid the money even though it was evident that my money had been stolen. That bank is all messed up!!!!!!!!!

niyyie even the devils banker will be relaxed in Ghana because the level of open eye for other people money will be fewer than naija.  hope you know even the trees in naija have their own passport. so whatis wrong with a bank that knows how the system work making rules to protect themselves? have you not heard there is anti money laundering rules?

i met a guy calling fire and brimstone in naija last year in one banking hall.  seeing his distress i became the peace maker between him and the bankers some of whom i knew. turned out he had come to withdraw a very large amount with a passport that does not bear the account holders name.  yes his photo was there.

if you were a banker how do you justify paying a person like that?  the delay his stupidity was causing is what you guys complain about but put yourselves in the banks position. what would you do?

you could pay cheques at sight to reduce the delays but you know every mama iyabo and mama ugochi in nigeria will be taking advantage of the situation.

if you guys can tell the banks the solution that would be very nice. while we wait, i say is we deserve the system we have.

first bank, union bank, afribank and wema are inn the same group - you would be foolish to expect quick, prompt, courteous or hi-teck service from them, so let's put them in a class of their own. because they are all 'arugbo ojo' (ancient of days) which is usually xterised by a fear of change, they will not change.

UBA on the other hand has no excuse. they should know better, but act like the arugbo part of the merger.

UBA IS NOT THE WORST BANK IN NIGERIA.HOWEVER,THE BANK IS MOVING /DRIFTING TOWARDS BEING THE WORST BANK.
I SUGGEST THERE SHOULD BE A CHANGE IN THE MANAGEMENT BECAUSE THIS SO CALLED TURNAROUND EXPERT IS DOING NOTHING THAN TO ACQUIRE MORE BANKS AND PAY CHEAP SALARY TO SKILLED AND  UNSKILLED STAFF,ALL IN THE NAME OF BEING THE BANK WITH THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF BRANCHES.
HOW ON EARTH CAN YOU LAY OFF YOUR STAFF WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE?THAT WAS WHAT THE EKPOMA/ HARVARD EXPERT DID.
HOW CAN YOU LAY OFF STAFF WITHOUT COMPENSATION UNTIL IT BECAME A COURT ISSUE?THAT WAS WHAT HE DID.
THANK GOD FOR HIS MERCIES THAT I AM PRESENTLY WORKING IN A GOOD AND BETTER BANK AND ALL MY COLLEAGUES WANT TO CHANGE TO THIS BANK.
DESPITE THE INCREASE IN SALARY(MAY 2007),STAFF ARE STILL LIVING IN FEARV THAT UBA WILL DOWNSIZE AND IT WAS FULFILLED IN NOV 2007.
SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE TO PUT THE BANK ON THE RIGHT TRACK AGAIN.
I MUST CONCLUDE IS NOT A PLACE TO WORK,ESPECIALLY WITH OUR ,

No one hates UBA more than any1 whose eva attended Babcock Uni. Their cashier queues are worse than that of the cafeteria. I have been tryin to get my ATM card since November 2006 and all they keep give me are excuses. To shift my a/c to lagos nko , long thing.
They frustrate u and when it comes to rudeness and sloppiness of staffs, theirs can only be surpassed by Union Bank's (even they are trying to improve)

I even thought it was just BU's branch until i went to their awolowo branch, Jesus,  thats d dirtiest bank on that road except Union Bank sha (u knw dose 1s are special).
and dats a bank dat is so keen on expanding they cud even build a branch on Pluto if it were possible

Anyway i heard from 1 of their senior staffs that its d bad blood of junior staffs that came 4rm d old UBA when dey got married to Standard Trust that's causing the problems

Its been 2 years or more now oooo Elumelu please do something for the few of us who believe in you.

Also abeg does anyone know where Wema Bank's branch is on Victoria Island

To butress your point concerning U B A bank, some times last year i sent money through moneygram transfer to my brother. The cashier said there is a mistake in the question and answer, but all other thing are correct ,that was in their allen avenue branch. After about 20 minute i was able to correct the mistake but for the cashier to say the money is no more in thier system.i went to where i sent the money and they track where the collected the money and find out that it was in another U B A branch in the same allen avenue , we later find out that the cashier in the first branch at allen send the number to the other one at the other branch in allen.we complian to the manager he was not able to do any thing,we then call in the police, the management said the police can not just arrest a staff like that, that we should first go and complain at the headquater,at the headquaters the managemen said they will do something concerning it and that is the last we had.after spending 11,000 thousand naira for the police to recover my money i still lost my 100,000 thousand naira, the onlything the police can say is this mr Kayode again. since then i gave an instruction never to go to any U B A to collect money again.

UBA is so bad that I cannot just list out all their attrocities, bu they are angels when you compare them to oceanic. Those guys are ,  Are,  Are simple nincompoops! Can you imagine me spending about five very long hour trying to pay in a cheque in a branch.
The worst one was that i stood up throughout, sandwitched between two heavy market woman types on the line, with hundreds of others cramped in a small bank.

I nearly visited my psychiatrist (doctor) straight from the bank, I was feeling baaaaad.

Hmm i was enjoying the beggining of this thread until i got fed up of numerous rubbish. I have issues with UBA,strong one,but i think its personal and not reviling them in public (i mean  in the news or to the whole of Nigerians through Nairaland). I'm not a die hard patriot either. This aint the way to address a corporate body. the westerners we immitate wont behave this way. the suffering american will always say 'In God We Trust". wtf is wrong wiv u guys? and SEUN still left this on the homepage and even on the forum? this is not the right or professional way to address your complaints, this is the touts way. I wonder the quality of nairalanders sef.
Its best for Seun  to delete this topic. I guess that is solely in your domain. Leaving it still on the forum still shows that we Nigerians love to swim in our troubles and problems with no solution. This is not good for the image of Nigeria and Nairaland.

I guess i'm making sense.

this is a public forum so people should be allowed to post what they feel about the bank, it is not for anybody to be Mr Nigeria, even, in the so called WESTERN SOCIETIES, discussion forums do worse off than people here sharing their agony,

back to the topic
forgive me if i am wrong but it is only UBA ( olu obasanjo, PH) that discrimnates people making cash deposits i.e N50,000 and below, go upstairs, just imagine the horrendous, endless queue that you always meet, always advisable to take a magazine as the noise level would not allowyou read a novel
