I know very few gay Naija men but a decent number of lesbian Naija. Is this becuase Naija boys generally trained to hide their true feelings?
There was a discussion I had with some friends a while back which was spurred on by the Broke Back Mountain movie.
What is life like being a gay naija person? Will Naija folk ever accept "gay people" as widely as it is in the western world? We seem to adopt all things western, i think it's only a matter of time

Well Nigeria is a country that injustie prevails. Doesnt it sound ridiculous that someone is a criminal just because of their sexual orientation? The government needs to work on something better!

I'm not certain the Nigerian public can ever fully accept homosexuality, as most (if not all) of our cultures and religions are against it. Of course, many ppl would eventually accept it, but many wouldn't.
I think the govt. wants to deal with this issue now b4 it bcomes a big problem, like it is in other countries. Nigeria isn't the only country to take such a decision; it's also a crime in Cameroun.

@Senge Is this because Naija boys generally trained to hide their true feelings? Thank God for NL, now we know what girls talk about, Now, hope you are not implying that a whole lot of Nigerian males are gays? and what kind of "feelings" do you expect a man to have, more than to have feelings for a woman"? By the time Nigeria begins to mass-produce gays, dont you think we would fall into a lot of problem as a country? who are you going to marry if the guys around you were gays. If you're married, who are your male kids gonna get hitched up with in future, on a more serious note: picture this: years from now, you're a mother, your kids are all grown up, some working, some in the University etc., and perhaps if your first born is a boy - someone whom you've(you and your husband) loved sooooooo much, labored over, prayed for day and night, toiled over, to get him an education, a decent life, etc., and whom you love so dearly, that you could give your own eye for him, and when he reaches the time he should get married, and you're expecting to have a daughter in law, real soon, and you're praying for him to make all the right choices in life, what would you do, if he walks in one day with a man behind him and introduces him(the other man) as his future parner, then tells you a loooong-story about how hes been gay for the past how-many years? would you feel happy and accomplished, as his mother, or would you feel a total failure?, im just asking, Ask any woman, who has a male child turned gay, if she's truly happy and proud of her gay-son? Put everything aside: religion, upbringing, background, put everything aside, and think about it. Well Nigeria is a country that injustie prevails I'm not certain the Nigerian public can ever fully accept homosexuality, I think the govt. wants to deal with this issue now before it bcomes a big problem I do not expect any reasonable government to fold their hands and watch as the "foundation of mankind" gets destroyed. At least, for the mere fact that the Nigerian government speaks against it, and people generally still frown against homosexuality, I feel happy that Nigeria still has hope. Its an indication that our values and virtues have not been totally lost. Nigeria Has Hope!!!

I'm interested to know how criminalising it and locking people up is going to stop people being gay? It doesn't seem to work for anything else?
There always have and always will be gay people everywhere in the world. It's just that society in some places forces them deep undercover.

regarding your first question, i don't know so i can't answer that and pertaining to the second,Nigerians in Nigeria completely accepting gayz is almost equal to the complete eradication of racism(not meanin to insult anyone, but that's how i see it).

I personally do not believe that anybody was born gay. People just develop this dirty habit from an ugly/distasteful experience sometime in the past! It's like other dirty habits that people develop. Take lesbianism for instance, a lot of the so-called lesbians at one time or the other have lived or schooled in a girls-only environment. And it's public knowledge that girls in girls-only schools take part in candle stick insertion into their private parts for sexual pleasure. From there they graduate to body touching. Girls who have taken part in such activity would see it as risk-free and safer than having relationship with members of the opposite sex. With boys, a lot of the homosexuals are people that have been abused at one time or the other by other males. To be able to live a 'normal' live they claim to have been born that way. It ain't TRUE!!!!! It's a dirty habit that has eaten deep into their system. They actually need therapy to come out of it.

@Mongue,
Personally, Yes, i don't believe locking them up is the way to go, but on a more serious note, i believe that those of us that are educated should profer reasonable ways of preventing moral decadence in our society rather than arguing that homosexuality is a normal way of life, and we should leave the practitioners to continue.
Wont it be better if we can help blind men regain their sight, rather than providing them with a walking stick so that they could continue in their blind state of life.
@Rottweiler I agree with you, don't think so too, that anyone was born gay. How can someone be born gay. Were any of our for-fathers/mothers born gay/lesbian? They didnt have all the problems we have today, in their own time. Too much of education, lack of home-training, lack of personal integrity and principles results in greater problems that man can handle. In my school, i remember a girl-classmate who was a girl in her first year, a notorious lesbian during her 2nd and 3rd years. Everyone even thought she had gone totally crazy. Before we graduated, she became a girl again, this time with a boyfriend. Today she's married with kids. Tell me that such a person was born gay. As you said, they allow this vile and evil habit to eat deep into their system and they soon begin to believe in it. Not only therapy, but a serious one.

Nigeria will come to accept homosexuality. As soon as the country begins to turn out a higher percentage of educated people, things will get better. Right now, Nigeria is reduced to degenerates, praise-singers, and self proposed people God. The country is still in its early stages of social development.

@mamaput: I applaud your sentiments and the eloquence with which you present them!!
There are, indeed, children starving. There are people sick and dying. There are so many temporal needs of so many people that are being unmet. Why is it of such importance what two consenting people of legal age are doing in with their own bodies, especially when it's not hurting anybody else? Should we not be giving more attention to issues such as schools? Hunger? Medical attention?
