Self Medication A.K.A "Doctor in the House".
« on: April 25, 2005, 01:33 PM »

In every home, there  is a "Doctor in the House", you know the one that you tell 'oh I have a headache' and he/she goes 'why not take Panadol'. In my house my mum is the Doctor in the House. When I was in the boarding school as part of my provisions, I had drugs (with prescriptions) for different ailments (stomach ache, headache, fever, etc.)  Enough  to start up a Pharmacy store courtesy of my mum.

Who needs a doctor when there is one in the house, saves cost as you don't have to pay for consultation Grin. Just kidding remember what they always say," if symptoms persist after three days consult your doctor".

So who is the Doctor in your house?

My mum, a licensed pharmacist, is definitely the doctor in our house.  When I was younger, we used to avoid  her when when we had cuts and bruises because she would gleefully bring out her tools - methylated spirit, cotton wool, iodine, hydrogen peroxide, scissors, hot water, etc.  We even tried to hide fevers out of the fear of getting so many tablets to swallow!

But I appreciate what she does now that I'm older and I don't have to take whatever she prescribes.  Besides I like drugs now,

I happen to have a mum who is a nurse and a midwife. I could remember when I was in the primary school, there was never a time that I ever visited a hospital.  She is our "Doctor in the House" because she has the cure to most ailments.  When I was in school, I had lots of injections in my drawer ranging from chloroquine to  novalgin, analgin, buscopan e.t.c. with syringes. All I needed then was a nurse to inject me whenever there was the need.  Now I am used to self medication.  I could say I am my own doctor because I always have drugs in my bag (I just make sure those drugs are coated because I find it very difficult to take drugs that are not). I only notify my mum of any serious ailment which requires urgent medical attention.

My Dad is a doctor and my Mum is a nurse. But most times, my Mum is the one that rams our backsides with injections.

Self medication is not too good.
It is not advisable.
Even some doctors do not administer directly on their immediate family.
It is professional.
You can ask from one who is professionally inclined.

But it's a pity some do forget their oath and go ahead with own things.
But I echo it again self medication is bad.
I am not talking of "first Aid" here Please don't misunderstand me.

When i was In Nigeria, My aunt was the doctor. Her kind of doctor is very scary. She will give you injections when you start sneezing. When you fall down, she'll get towel and put it in Hot water, and she'll use it on your leg/arm or where u fell. After that, she'll use Robb and rob it all over your leg, she don't care whether or not u cry. I remeber there was a time, my cousin brother fell, and he also matched a nail. My mom deep knife in fire, and used it on his leg with palm oil. Ever since that day, I am always with my slippers. I soooo don't want to try that kind of thing. My mom(aunt.... but i grew up with her, so she's like my mom). She was definitely the doctor!!

Interesting!  Huh I wonder why Seun decided to resurrect this thread, started by my whizzyself. Talking about Doctor in the house, mix a satchet of Alabunkun with raw egg (1) and fresh lime juice, all  in a cup and drink for three days ( did I hear someone say yak Grin). It is a very effective cure for Typhoid fever. But you didn't hear it from me oh.

Hey Greatpeter, so what're you saying? that they shouldn't take the quickest way to heaven? Wink. But seriously it has worked for people I know. I haven't tried it though, because I hate concoctions and this is one nauseates me.

I am the doctor in my own house. I once skipped a surgery because the doctor didnt go through the proper procedures and I lost faith in him. I use the mayo clinic website which has tons of information. generally, I use websites.

I still have my tonsilities but when i have the money, i will do it in jand or somewhere safer.
