while searching for icons/pngs over the weekend, i stumbled on this app

launchy

thats it above 8 start, in a black glass skin

it works the way search in vista's search menu does. ie, just type in text, and the target pops up. its wonderfully customsable, you can index documents, start menu, etc. skins are in deviant art.

Nice info on the application (Launchy). I'll look it up. Oh and many thanks too for the link to 8start. I've downloaded it (took much less time that I expected). I'll post up some screens real soon!

Cheers

Hey man, every one knows there's no such thing as the "Best Desktop". What may appeal to you may not appeal to the next person. Some like clear empty and organised desktops while others enjoy having every last file and software to cover every inch of their desktops.  Sad

Some don't even believe it's possible to work with a clear desktop free of untidy icon arrangements and stuff.  Lips sealed

Some have no idea of certain software available for use, or rather how they would look while running on a particular system.  Cool

The real essence of this thread is enlightenment! After a reasonable no. of posts, yeah we could have a poll to see whose desktop ranks highest to the general house.

We acknowledge the fact that Bigrovar's desktop screenshots are real cool, but Your earlier comment saying all others are crap won't go down well with any other forum contributors. Especially one who hasn't contributed yet!  Undecided Undecided

And to finally answer your question - Of course we want to see your screenshots. We don't have to start begging you for something others submit willingly and whole-heartedly.  Undecided Or, is there something we all stand to gain from the contents of your desktop???  Huh

well said ,  for me i hate to having a spec of file or link on my desktop,  i love it to be very clean and organized,  my desktop is my virtual living room,  so i like it clean and tidy (everything that my room is not) i also love to use dock programs and widgets,  most importantly,  i love and am a sucker for a Free and Opensource Desktop,  cus with that there is no restriction to what i can do with it, i own my desktop and i can bend it twist it and make it look just like i want,

The first screenshot has my amarok music player which displays  the lyrics of any song i play on it ( if am online) and it integrate with pidgin (an open source messenger  (yahoo) client),  so that what ever song i play get displayed as my yahoo status

the second picz is just what u can get on a linux deskop if u don't want a cube

I have over 4 different desktop environment installed on my ubuntu system,  unlike windows were the only desktop environment u have is the windows explorer on linux there are many Desktop environment u can install,  but the must popular is KDE and GNOME,  each desktop environment is quite diff from each other, and most times have their default applications even though KDE apps can work on a Gnome Desktop,
to switch between desktop i just log off a current desktop and i select the new desktop i want to log into

sorry for the late reply

i 've found that sometimes, 8 start launcher does not start working immediately after installation( why this is, i don't know). it couls be a registry issue. anyway, after a couple of days, prpbably less- it WILL start working. i had the issue when i first installed it on xp on my oold toshiba machine, and when i first installed on vista on my current dell machine. within a day or so, after a reboot i think) it was working. no long thing - go easy on the WMD

i decied to start using visual task tips - which emulates task tips in vista - you can get this at crystalxp.net

skin consortiums ebonite skin for winamp at 80% transparency, with
album list 2.05 and classic spectrm anaylzer plugins enabled

the basicfx skin for cursor xp

will prolly soon have to do the ram upgrade thingy. . .

for anyone that uses recent x, a newer version(2.016) is out . . . it ain't freeware, but those who know what to do - will know what to do  Wink

Hey, nice stuff still.

About the 8start, I noticed it could be a little tricky to get used to the buttons, but if you give it some more study time, you'll figure it out.

In my case, I found that 8start crashes when I try to use the option of "copy" instead of "link" for placing icons in the tray. Also, when I log on after hibernation, 8start shows as running from the task manager but it's fully hidden from sight. I have to end the process from the task manager and start it up again before I get to see it.

Anyways, its a good software.

Cheers

an 8start hack/tip - if you naviaget to the settings folder in 8 start, you can copy and past shortcuts directly to the folders there, then just restart, and presto, the shortcuts are there. its a faster method of adding program links

also, if you know how to change shorcut icons( usually by clicking on cusytomize , and change icon, you can ghange the appearance of soem icons. i did this for my modded dukenukem and doom . I'm using snowberry to run hires doom and the hrp to run a high res dukenukem. the shortcuts to these are not game icons. so i simply changed the icons to game icons via customisaton )
