Since I've been here at nairaland.com, I've tried to familiarize myself with Pidgin. Several fine people whom I've encountered here have been helpful to me in that regard. To those persons I am, and shall remain, grateful.
However, allow me to address this to everybody. I would like to learn Pidgin, so that I may more readily understand some of the postings made here (and for a possible trip to Nigeria, as well).
Is there a good method of learning it? Do I have to simply struggle through reading it and trying to approximate its pronunciations?
What do you suggest?

@ drrionelli try learning Hawaiian pidgin English , that is the closest thing to Nigerian pidgin English, i think you will be better able to understand 9 j a pidgin then |

Is the language pronounced in a phonetic way, i.e., is it largely pronounced the way it would seem to be in proper English? Example: Is "sabi" pronounced sah-bee? Is "una" pronounced ooo-nah or yoo-na? |

Here are the questions: Why do you want to learn pidgin? For what purpose? Are you married to a Nigerian? Are you friends with one? WHAT IS UR PURPOSE FOR WANTING TO LEARN PIDGIN? Most of the other non-Nigerians that are on this site are either married to one, have dated a few or are good friends with one. You have all these questions on our language and culture. That's all well and good. I'm flattered that an oyibo person wants to learn about us. I have only 1 question that I really need the answer to, why do you want to learn pidgin? |
