Have You Ever Experienced Racism In Yankee?
« on: April 23, 2006, 08:23 PM »

Have you ever experience racism in Yankee? I used to hear about racism but l never really believed in it until lately at my student job as a waitress . I got the shock of my life from one of my new supervisors. Imagine , one day  l had a costomer come in to eat at my job and then the costomer left the job for some wierd reasons, so l asked my boss while did the costomer leave the job and he replied that , when my so called white costomer saw that l was around , they left because they couldn't stand me. " What tears pouring down my eyes"! Shocked Huh Cry Cry Cry Cry Shock of a lifetime. I don't know if it was my naija blood in me that couldn't stand that statement , l found myself abusing my so called supervisor and calling him a hard core "racist"before his very eyes. The shock of his lifetime. He will never forget me in his lifetime. Grin Grin Grin

good thing you let him hear you call him a racist but i'm telling you that every body that is not white has been a victim of racism, most people don't know it though, especially on job interviews. the worst thing is if you are the only black kid in school or hood then you are really alone.

OFFTOPIC:

I have taken some time to meditate over my original response to this topic as well as the replies.

Nferyn has sensitised me to the reality that Nigerians abroad - about 83% - have to deal with the painful issue of racism from time to time.  As a result, it's important to show some empathy, which is something I have not considered until now.

Characterizing disney's response (not disney, but her response) to her boss as being "like a black monkey" was calculated to shock people into seeing things from a different angle, but it backfired massively because people were responding to me as the forum admin and not as a random member with unpopular views.

This upsets me.  Not because of how people may percieve me personally - I don't care about that - but because of the impact of such insensitivity on the Nairaland members (Nigerians in the diaspora) who have genuinely suffered from racism.  As the Nairaland admin, I hereby apologize for the insensitivity I may have shown.

As a person, my views haven't really changed, but I'm going to open myself up try to understand the feelings of Nigerians abroad who are affected by racism.  Thanks for reading!

I see it , i breathe it and i drink racism everyday here in the US. I use to be emotional about it but not anymore, ignore the idiots and live ur life the way it should be. Not all them whites are racist anyways. I have really good white friends too. So what do i do to piss the racist off?

I go out with the white girls and make out in the public. I make sure that em racist see me with em girls and its my joy when they look at us without a blink

Very disturbing situation. But disney, was the supervisor telling you what the customer said or what he thinks etc? Did you quit? What Uni do you attend? (Or for discretion) Where do you go to school?

Really quite sad. Undecided I also started to experience racism when I went to my "diverse" college.

Dating white women is not a subversive act b/c racists think that all black men want to f*ck white women b/c of their racial superiority etc. My dude, just do you. White women or not.

I face this nearly every week in College and i always report the teacher to my personal tutor but she's stupid enough to say sorry and still reapeat the racism behavior, its in their blood. at the moment I'm not really bordered because i know in the area i live if u say it to their face without swearing that they are racist, they will cool down.

Racism in Nigeria? its unbelievable. Nigeria must be turning to hell for some people now. God help us (Solution). We can't blame others being racist toward us when we are toward ourselves. We need to wake up and unite if not we just started complaining.

Well i haven't yet experienced any serious outward racist act. The racists here are really good at being two faced so u never know. Undecided

I don't get overly upset about racism because every racist is ignorant no matter what kind of education they have, so why should i waste my strength being upset over an ignorant person. Cool

I go about life with my heads high up, its only if those racist are deliberately hindering my success then we have a problem Angry but for the most part i go about my life being happy and thanking God for everyminute,  ehmehm, well as of as i can Grin

It was prevalent in my polical science class and the teacher knows i don't like the way he portrayed the blacks in the capital punishment issues we dealth with. What he is saying is true but anything that will hamper the way a student thinks about race should be avoided. Anything that will cause racial.

I wrote my capstone paper on racisim in defence of the blacks and the teacher graded it bad, so I have to argue on why my grade was low but  nothing could be done about it because all my trails to get to the dean ended to no avail.

@larger_20
OMG!!! The same thing happened to me in a History class I took my freshman year. My TA gave my paper a B- b/c he said that the media started the civil rights mvmt. and not activists. Angry When I tried to reason w/ him he was basically like "You're a freshman" and very, very dismissive. The prof (who was a 1st year, 1st semester prof at the time) was totally unsupportive and acted like she couldn't understand the concept of my paper etc. Angry Angry Angry Throughout the class, I could tell he didn't think much of black people and wanted to down play their achievements.
That's totally wrong. College & Unis are supposed to be bastions of knowledge. And not only are they falling on their face, it's eating my money sha! But, as I always say, it's the ignorance of the educated that's most striking.

You can't cry recism casue we all know it exists, the sad part is that we are all a bit diecriminatory,
You tell me you wont favor your Nigerian colleague, Just aim for the sky and shatter that glass ceiling man

Statistics in Canada show that the poorest individual in Canada is the black women
is this due to racism o is there other hidden factors?

hi y'all, sad truth is racism is a reality in whatever form it rears its ugly head. if it wasn't racism, it would be tribalism or sexism or any of the other 'isms.' i'd rather not dwell on it because u tend to have a victim mentality. fact is people will always discriminate, against what they don't understand.
the caste system exists in almost every nook and cranny on this planet. in ibo land its osu, and the indians have the untouchables.
until everyone looks inwards and abolishes the superiority complex (which is inherent in everyone), only then can they point fingers.
think about it!

i guess the bottom line is that there would always be discrimination.
