Anytime I'm in America, I always meet Nigeria people trying to speak like Americans. It's annoying that we are telling ourselves that whatever we are is not good enough

They can try all they want--that is all they can do. It is allowed. They can never hide that sweet thick accent! Not to talk of the high tone of voice. No one is deceived. Annoying? No. Entertaining!

It's annoying that we are telling ourselves that whatever we are is not good enough not so all the time. have you ever been in a situation where someone is glaring at you because they say they can't understand your heavily African accent. Five minute transaction extending to thirty minutes or more because you have to keep repeating yourself over and over to a very hostile person/cashier who insists on not understanding anything you say. Not to mention spelling your name like five times in three minutes. A as in Apple, D as in david, I as in Ink, etc etc Na that kind thing dey make people develop complex and begin dey modify their accent small small or in a big way. No blame them. The end justifies the means. No vex for people abeg. man must wack.

My wife, her sister and many of their cousins were all born and raised their whole lives here in the US, and thus consider themselves to be more so African-Americans than Nigerian-Americans. This is mainly do to having a stronger tie to the African-American cultural identity than that of the Nigerian-- due to the environment they grew up in.

Do to the unquestionably implanted identity connection in which the African-American has in-rooted into the American presence--- it allows for a platform in which Africans and other non-formal black-Americans born and raised here in the US can much easily blend into the obscure of the American identity much better than alot of other groups, such as non black and white Hispanics and or Asians.

@ Naija-diva, Asians (at least here in the UK) tend to hold on to their culture and its beyond mere speaking the language.
Look at the Indians, Pakistanis, Malaysians,Chinese, Japanese,Sri lankans.
They speak the language (some also write it) Eat the food Keep their names, instead of changing it to a (White sounding one) Observe their festivals en mass, like Eid, Chinese new year etc Practice their religions Ever seen an indian wedding?, Culture Galore Wear their clothes, in my Uni days, the Asian girls would wear their sari's daily
Compared to many Africans, especially west Africans, they keep their culture when they move to a foreign land. Not only that they are not as eager to shack up witht he nearest White woman they can find who will have them, like those who will remain nameless, lol

BE YOU, DO YOU.
Whatever that is.
People lose their identity because they never had one or are ashamed of the one they got.
most africans won't open their mouths - in fear that they maybe found out. Define your culture and hob nob in it.
too bad most think YT is god.

You can never compare an Asian to an African. They are even more westernized than Africans, but will never let you know. They have a strong sense of self pride enough to keep what they have and demonstrate a committment to self-reliance and improvement always. Now that is what I call "culture". What do Africans have? Like you said, West Africans are the worst. I personally never experience any "culture" per se when I was in Nigeria so I absolutely have nothing to gain by learning a new one. All this one people are making noise here. Let them come and tell us what "African" culture is. A culture of greed, selfishness, ingnorance and mediocrity. . . . . . .And why they keep watching American Idol, Prison Break, CNN and so on and so forth when they cannot even watch the programmes on their local TV stations in Nigeria? I choose to do these because I have already defined what "culture" I choose to identify with. Let the champions of "African culture" gladly explain the reason why they do not patronize elements in their so called "African Culture", instead of chanting empty sentiments with no basis in any given personal convictions or doctrines, as a result of lack of self knowledge/worth if a may add.

Why African loosing their Identity in the west is like a man who used coal, clay and yellow to design his face at night, so in the morning when he comes out people start laughing at him that it's not the way to put make-up, so looking himself in the mirror and looking how others apply their own become a thing to be ashamed of. So he'll try to adjust, adopt other's way to systematize his own.
