you couldn't have followed all precautions maybe you chose the option for ubuntu to use the entire hard disk. Its a rule of thumb for the Os to preserve your files unless there was a problem with your drive. Do you still have windows installed after installing ubuntu ? try http://wwwhandyrecovery.com

I did take d precaution I suspect that it did not overwrite XP, what I suspect happend was that when it rebooted, i chose what i tot was xp but i realise too late that it was the self reinstalling partition in next sys nowadays that was booted and that overwrote everything even when i tried to stop it. I just need to get my data out now.

Firstly Ubuntu cannot overwrite your OS, windows does that with you installing windows after you might have installed ubuntu. What happened is that you made a mistake duiring the partition or you choose not to migrate you windows installation during the cause of installation in fiesty fawn so you cannot blame ubuntu here. You have two option as solution 1. Boot with the ubuntu live CD it will mount your windows partition if its still there then click on place then computer and you are going to see your windows and linux partitions then open the windows partition and save your files to a flashdrive from there. 2. Boot from an XP cd and located your linux partition and delete it (thread with caution not to delete your windows partition) then reboot you should have your windoze back that is if you've not really deleted it in your cause of installing linux. Good luck

people. stop dual booting. go virtual. get virtual pc 2007(free), virtual box(free), VMware (bloatware, expensive) or parallels workstation (non-free, but i have keygen) and run any other OS from within windows or vice versa. i run win xp and kubuntu simultaneously with vista ultimate. its great.

Now many things could be responsible for that. 1. It could be the iso wasn't downloaded properly, 2 it could be that the cd burning program didn't burn it well. 3 it might be an hardware issue. My advise why not try that cd on another machine, if it has the same problem then it should be the iso that has problem. However check ubuntunigeria.wordpress.com for how you can get a good cd from one of the representatives of the ubuntu nigeria project

See linux has been built to be error free and what causes error is nothing but improperly burnt cd so man DONT use it cause it obviously told you it has error. Contact Brovar he lives there in Lagos he can give u good cd. Cheerio

what i can tell u from experience is that probably the iso u downloaded is defective , or maybe your burner , one thing is sure though , don't try to install it, u can try downloading another iso or if u can wait request for a free cd from ubuntu.com or get in touch with me i have all the ubuntu iso s and am always willing to share

virtualizing is an awesome way to install 2 os on a system, and i use it in my ubuntu to install xp which works like a charm, i can do everything i can do on a normal xp, and i even mounted my vista/storage and ubuntu drives on it, but i would not advise it for someone u really wants to see the power of linux, that can only be achieved if u install it on your physical hard disk , that way u get to enjoy the full potential of ubuntu which would be limited if u use VB or any other virtualization software

Very True Bigbrovar . . . Virtualizing Linux in a virtual drive is not the ishh . . . You really can't get the full Linux experience that way!
