Igbo Names & Their Meanings
« on: April 25, 2006, 07:51 PM »

Hi.
I'm English and have married a Igbo Man.
When he returns home we will be starting our family, and I wanted to know some Igbo names, that I can consider for our children.
Thanks  Smiley

In Igboland it is the right of the father to name his children, Igbo names are rich in meanings and basically tell a story, event or generally praise God,

Names i would suggest are:

Nkemakolam - My Igbo Name
Ngozi
Chinenye
Emeka
Eze
Ada
Uzondu
Chidebere
Ndidi

The list go on and on

She asked for meanings

Nneoma -- Beautiful/Sweet mother

Ifeoma -- Nice thing  Huh Huh

Amaka -- Beautiful

Nnenna -- Mother of her father [if you believe in reincarnation].

How come I can only "decrypt" female names?

Wow. Hotstepper's got this on lock. My humble contribution:

Chiazor
Ebelechuckwu -
Amarachi - God's grace
Onnaedo - priceless; worth more than gold
Ugochi - God's eagle; Divine prestige
Ndubuisi - life is paramount
*Ejitu*
Anyanwu- the sun, the source of light & wisdom
Anyachi - GOd's eyes
Chijioke
Chika (Chikadibia or Chikekepere) - God is supreme (God is greater than all doctors)
Oluchi - God's work

I apologize for the repeats but these are some of my favs. Can someone (Hotstepper?) please give the meaning of Ejitu. Embarrassed I should know this!

I'll be back w/ more. But remember, there are so many Igbo names that you needn't choose a "popular" one. Peace.
