Actually i think its a common misconception among non-igbo speakers and even some igbo speakers that those names are insults or bad in some kind of way.

Yes. It should be Igbo. It was my grandmother's name. But my own mother doesn't know what it means. Undecided My cousin is also named that (after granny of course). I'm thinking that maybe it's an archaic name. And we're from the country somaybe it was never popular in other areas. Who do you suppose I should ask? Does it sound like another language to you? Which? Thanks for asking around for me.

It could be that your grandmother was named after her grandmother who came from Huh

The same with me my igbo name ended up not being an igbo name but  from "Bendel" name.

Its also possible you come from one of there boarder villages  were people will always argue with you were you come from.

Re: Igbo Names & Their Meanings

Ugonna translates "Father's eagle".

Or if God is meant by "Father" than "God's eagle". (But then Ugochi translates to "God's eagle" spot on.)

I've also heard that the meaning of Ugochi is "Divine prestige". The divinity would be God's annointment persay & the prestige would be the eagle so you are the "feather in the cap".

So Ugonna could be "Divine prestige" or "Father's prestige".

Someone, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong. . . Smiley
