We are too emotional about the made in Nigeria car. We lost our 1st chance in the 70s and 80s when the purchasing power was high. Then only PAN and Eddy Bongos made significant impact in increasing local content for the car industry. For real progress to be made, the following must be considered; 1. market availability, 2007 figures for new car sales is very encouraging about 50,000 pc. Banks need to do more 2. availability of technical manpower and right salary 3. availability of of support industries with neccessary raw materials- still very dicey 4. tarrif structure to discourage imports, many countries have used that to grow the local industry, but our borders are porous 5. good export marketing 6. right design to produce correct product mix. 7. good advertisement to promote local consumption and acceptance 8. good training to make repairs easy and cheap 9. availability of cheap spares. With these and some more , the local car industry will blossom
