i'm not sure that was "wages of sin". I think the main figure in the book was a randy man who went about sleeping with women around town until nemesis caught up with him.

The Wages of Sin is definitely the title of the book I described (though I do not know the name of the author so I cannot confirm if it is Ibe Oparandu).

Pacesseter novels and African Writers series. Now, those ones are also classics, and it is unfortunate that the series is no longer being published. I think those series actually gave some publicity to African writers. Now is there an umbrella that all African writers, the new generation could publish, so that their works can be classifed as African literary pieces?

I used to love Pacesetters when I was a wee lass.

The Delinquent, The Undesirable Element, Sis, Too Cold for Comfort, Sweet Revenge, Love on the Rocks, Bloodbath at Lobster Close, The Cyclist, For Mbata and Rebecca (I hope I got the spelling right), e.t.c.

I could go on and on. Who can remember the title of the pacesetter where the guy had a girlfriend. He went abroad i think and she was promiscuous and kept sleeping around. When he came back he wanted to marry her despite people telling him of her infidelity. To cut a long story short, they went sightseeing somewhere in igboland and inside the cave the girl disappeared to shag another guy, so the protagonist dumped her. By the time the she had been through the mill and came back to beg him, he was already married and his wife was preganant.

If you remember this book, please post the title on this thread.
my favourite was Evbu my love. there was one about two brothers, i think they could fight. i can't really remember the name or the storyline. but anyone who has an idea should please say it.

You're very right, the book i was confusing it with was "death is a woman" by Dickson Igbavini! Classic!

"On the road" by Kalu Okpi was a bomb! that guy could write. Coup by the same author was also very good. I think he was the best of the lot.  Phillip Phil-Ebosie was another very interesting pacesetter author.

As a child i had a very active imagination, after reading "sweet revenge" i thought of carving my own gun and pulling off my own bank heist, thank God i did not have the requisite carving skill.

I also loved "tell me no more" i remember the book was so captivating and i could not drop it,   i was reading in under my desk while my English teacher was delivering his lecture. he noticed i was not paying attention and  on close examination he discovered what i was doing, he promptly seized the book. when i tried begging him to return the book after the lecture he harshly told me "tell me no more" to give you this book. he eventually returned it after about 4 weeks when i caught him reading it in the staff room.

If you can recall the storyline in "The Cyclist",  the bicycle repairer told his wife to enter the room and prepare for conjugal activity when he learnt that the woman's 1st husband had just returned from the Biafra war. back in those days that part of the story seemed like full blown pornography. i remember visiting that particular page several times afterwards. ( i was under 10 years at the time). i used to get a kick by just reading that portion over and over again.

i can go on and on about the funny experiences i had with each of those books.

At the last Nigerian International Book fair, the books were on display and i realise that they are still available. They requested that i should write some stories for them but i had to decline because i wouldn't have the time.

This may however be an opportunity for those may want to approach Macmillan with their manuscripts. Who knows,

I must have read all the Pacesetters novels that were available then. I had most of them but I have no idea where they are now. I can't remember most of the story lines except Love on the rocks. I read it many times over. Wink

i loved loved pace setters that was what brought me into the world of romance novels, after my lady bird & Enid blyton series,

When i first read 'Undesireable element' i thought that was the bomb until i started reading others, "ebvu my love", "rich girl poor boy" e.t.c i read a whole lot of them until i stopped seeing them, i even re-read some. very delicious. i loved the African setting, i loved d modesty in d ladies & men in those books. Its a real scary movie to what we have now.

awww,  thanks for bringing back the golden memories of my time in naija. I beg who didnt read  pacesetter series? That was when reading culture was in naija, when you see a primary school kid reading a novel with more than 200 pages. OMG our reading culture has dramatically gone down the rail!  I remember when i first read "The Undesirable Elements" i couldnt stop reading it! How I wish naija could be like it was before!

Why can't the Nollywood use pacesetter series to do their movies instead of the useless storyline they re now using?

Uhh, Pacesetters! I remember the books with amazing fondness! Tho i can hardly remember most of the story lines, i recall such titles as 'Love on the rock' ( I remember taking that title literally at some point) 'The Cyclist', 'Undesirable element'( my fav), 'Sacrificial Child'(hope i got that right), Sisi, Too cold for comfort, Obsessed (spooked me like crazy) the Director and several more i can't recollect.
Those books flagged up my appetite for reading and right down to this day, I'm an ardent reader of a variety of good books. Cool
