@c.wolf, forget story; MS will still take over 85% of the market share; most of the people who
will try out thee google os are adventurous guys like the linux users, not the average joe
who doesn't even know what an operating system is

@bigrovar
how's the performance of kde 4.x? i used to hear that it was buggy (am sure by now it's much better)
the only os i have that uses kde 4.x is opensuse 11 i think, but men that thing drags - ok it's MUCH better than vista
but it still drags; i stil use kde3.5 on most of my kde-based distros

well am finding kde 4.3 to be quite stable ,  although its still very beta and i would not recommend it for everyday use ,  it still has some rough edges ,

Hello, everybody,
i have been reading this thread for the past 3 month now, trying to decide whether to switch to this Ubuntu OS. For people like me who have never known(used) anyother Os apart from Windows, honestly it a tough decision and am really scared but I have decided to try some new.
So here we go, i tried downloading the iso like suggested somewhere on this thread but was getting 45kb of data and can't write it on a cd. and pls house am a bit confused with all those mint, gloria.kde stuff are they the same ubuntu os,
My location is Enugu, can someone help me with a cd,
Thanks all, peace

That's a decision most of us had to make. But I don't think it's such a drastic move considering the fact that you can revert back to Windows or simply dual boot (run both windows and Linux). With Linux, you won't have virus problems as linux is pretty much immune to all that. Most win32 applications have Linux alternatives, although Linux is a bit internet dependent, you should enjoy it.

Perhaps, your internet connection is not the way forward . A standard Ubuntu .iso shouldn't be less than 600MB, depending on your internet connection, downloading that will be like playing 'whack-a-mole'. 45Kb is definitely, not it, unless it's a .torrent file you downloaded or an .iso file to grab the other packages off the internet as you attempt to install which isn't recommended.

The best thing for you to do is take some time off, read tons of guides / articles on the internet and with no time, you'll get to understand things.
Linux mint is an operating system, much like Ubuntu. Gloria is the default desktop on Mint. KDE is a desktop environment that can be installed on existing linux operating systems. It does basically what the win32 explorer does such as provide basic / advanced desktop functionality and applications for your daily need. The default DM in ubuntu Gnome which, IMO is pretty much stable until you break it like mine.

Sadly, I can't help you with that. I'm currently in Abuja chilling with my folks (thanks to ASUU) and will be back to Benue when the strike has been called off, if you know anyone around any of the aforementioned areas, I could send a CD your way.

Hi guys am sorry for being silent for a while ,  well its because i have been banned from posting msgs on Nairaland ,  the reason given was that i posted   *spam* here , in Nairaland ,  i tried mailing the mod for computer section (dhtml) and i even left a msg for seun that this most be a mistake because i have never posted spam msg here ,  ever since i have been a member here i have tried to abide by the rules of decent discussion expected on a public forum. well i guess it was all to no avail. as it is my normal nairaland account bigrovar is no longer active ,  i had to create this account so i can post this msg ,  after which i have no intention of being a part of the board anymore ,  its really sad that things have to turn out this way ,  and this is no way to run the biggest on-line forum in Nigeria. anyway i want to thank everybody and all my friend that have made my stay here a memorable one ,  will miss u all  for those who still want to get in touch with me u can do that thru twitter http://twitter.com/bigbrovar  or thru my blog http://bigbrovar.wordpress.com or the ubuntunigeria mailing list http://groups.google.com/group/ubuntunigeria/ ,  so i guess this is it ,  bye

Bigbrovar, please, don't leave like that. I had the exact same thing happen to me and all I did was clicked the 'Report to Moderator' link in one post and inform them of the issue. Ideally, it's pretty much stupid and insensitive to think that an active participant of the community with over 500 posts would post spam. Perhaps, it was a (stupid?) mistake. Some Administrators or Moderators need to be (re)introduced (bad english) to the term 'spam' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam).
