« #1097 on: July 18, 2009, 10:59 PM »

@Septuagenarian  i take it the version of windows you were trying to
install is xp; on some earlier pcs with sata support (like the hp530) you could
get round this by disabling sata native mode in the bios; however i'm not
sure you can do that on the dv5
as to installing ubuntu, i dont know what version you are using but from v7
sata should be enabled by default; you shouldn't have any problem installing it
at all; basically any linux distro released within the last 2 years should have sata support by default

@4llerbe how far now? i never hear from you or u no need d cds anymore?

Re: Ubuntu Linux
« #1100 on: July 19, 2009, 10:22 PM »

@4llerbe
those codec issues have somthing to do with licensing
(redhat, fedora, ubuntu, debian among others all seem to
have that restriction by default)
anyway you could use mandriva (i don't really like it  too much
'cos it automatically mounts all my partitions and shows the icons
on my desktop imagine how cluttered your desktop would look
if you had over 20 partitions but you may find it convenient) besides
it's the only linux distro i've ever used where i didn't have to configure
my modem, i was really shocked
i also have slax and puppy both lightweight livecds - you can use them
without installing and they also have mp3 & dvd support by default
(which windows doesn't even have; you have to install a dvd player
to be able to play dvds on media player )
you're on mtn right? i should think configureing internet on it would be
easy.

which do you guys think is the easiest to configure for internet
(i personally think mtn is)

@4llerbe
ubuntu right (i.e a gnome based os - as opposed to kde)?
are you connecting by data cable or bluetooth?
can you connect in windows?
normally i do such stuff manually, unfortunately i can't remember mtn
settings at the moment; may try when i get home
but if you can set it up in windows i can tell you how to do it in linux
but you will have to tell me some settings though
