Most likely your webcam is working. Try using ekiga to test it. If it works then download cheese. Or if you have gstreamer installed then press  alt+f2 and type gstreamer-properities and press enter. Look for test input. If webcam is working them you should see your face.

About your audio files you probably lacking one lib file or the other. Try searching within synaptic for wma or codec or non-free codec or gstreamer-ugly or gstreamer-bad or gstreamer-good.

to solve the codec problem, you could install VLC or Mplayer. both media players come with all the codecs you will need. alternatively, you could install all the Gstreamer codecs.
to install VLC or Mplayer: go to Applications >> Add/Remove and search for VLC or Mplayer. click on the check box and click apply. after it installs, you can find it under Applications >> Sound & Video. alternatively, you can open up your terminal and type this (without quotes) "sudo apt-get install vlc" or "sudo apt-get install Mplayer". it will prompt you to enter your password (dont worry if you dont see anything as you are typing) and then you press enter. after it instally, you will find it in the same place as before.
to install gstreamer plugins (this will enable you play your files with the media players you already have): goto System >> Administation >> Synaptic Package Manager. in the search bar, type "gstreamer" from the results, select gsreamer1.10-plugins-good, gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly. click on apply. after it installs, check to see id you can play back your files.
as for the webcam, you can google to see if your webcam is supported by default. if it is an inbuilt webcam for HP or Dell, it most likely is already supported so all you have to do is install "cheese" by using similar methods to the one outlined above or typing "sudo apt-get install cheese" in the terminal. (terminal can be found in Applications >> assesories >>terminal.

@ cwolf

i good thing about ubuntu is that if it finds a file it doesnt have any supporting extension to run it with, it prompts you to go on line to find a valid extension to run that file with.

what type of media player are you using? have you performed a major update on your system to get updates for packages running on your system,

and like muyiscoi said, u can download vlc player, which in turn would download every codec you need.

try update your ubuntu, to get going,   Cheesy

@hansibone
when u said at home where were u referring to ? The island or where
About the deb issue, i'd go get it online myself. I've been doing that now for some time now. The easy way is to mark the package u need in the synaptic package and generate a package download script from the file menu. Now you can view this script and copy the links to the deb files you want even in windows

Re: Ubuntu Linux
« #1201 on: August 21, 2009, 09:00 AM »

@4llerbe
hansibone already have u a guide on how to install from source files. Also source files contain install instructions. If you extract the archive, inside it you should see a file named install, open it and read the instructions. Its the same as what hansibone wrote.
If you now want to make a deb you can install checkinstall.
Really installing from source could be a real pain at time cuz of some real strange dependencies

Please can i get help getting  my visafone ADU-510 (usb) Modem to work on ubuntu(9.04). I previously was using starcomm's sierra's aircard 580 (pci) which worked out of the box, all i had to do was to configure my user name and password to get it up and online. On windows its actually recognised as cd-rom drive and it auto installs. it has actually worked once on ubuntu and since then i have never gotten it working again, ubuntu recognised it as a cd-rom just like windows. The network manger also recognised the device. I know Ubuntu 9.04 recognises and supports most modem devices out of the box, even mobile phones being used as modems. I was just wondering is it my modem that has some kinda of hardware defect or is there anyone else in this forum that has the same issues.

N.B: I know if i try the Vdail thingy it should work,  i just believe there should be a straight forward GUI way it shld work.

Another little thing, my biggest issue with ubuntu is streaming flash videos online ,  its always choppy,  youtube, porn e.t.c. anybody got a way around this issue?

Thanks!

Re: Ubuntu Linux
« #1209 on: August 23, 2009, 05:26 PM »

@jedikight

streaming contents all depends on your browser, so wat u do is try to update your flash plugins on your browser or simply,  use apt-get upgrade,  to upgrade any application dat needs upgrade,

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get install

dat should help

As for the visaphone stuff, try deleting d previous profile in the network manager and i bet it would reconfigure it again,

@nazr,

gimme a call,

@afo

i am deleting your file, dont think u nid it,

@prof why u nefa call me

@Hansibone,

Thanks for the reply,  As per the flash thing. I have tried all that,  i have even downgraded to an earlier flash version, tried the alternatives an so on. All the browsers on ubuntu use the firefox's flash plugin. it's definitely not an upgrade issue. Does your youtube stream well on Ubuntu.
this issue is on particular to ubuntu. flash works great on Linux mint though. i heard mint has java and flash built in.

I will try what u said on deleting the profile on the network manager and see if it works.

Thanks,
Bless!

@ Hasibone,

Thanks for your replies. My internet connection speed  is pretty decent so i don't think thats the issue with the flash streaming.Also the visafone modem still didn't work. I tried what u said, still no show!

Anybody with any ideas? not being able to get online with the modem is really cramping my Ubuntu style.  Wink

@jedi

now i dont understad y your fiefox is having problems with flash contents and mine is not, as for youtube and speed yes it does,  dos your connection attain speeds of 100kb and above? mine clocks 5mb (NOT bragging),

as for the visaphone moderm, what make and version is it,  network manager is automated to configure modems,  so i dont know y visaphone is not working,  i have tried my ends on alot of em,  even the notorious reltel modem and network manager configured it with no wahala, just had to fix in the dial up number and thats all,

 Undecided

Re: Ubuntu Linux
« #1215 on: August 26, 2009, 10:50 AM »

@jediknight

i just check d configuration for your modem, it is an autoplay type, which means, gnome network manager should be able to configure it, check your config and see if u nid to enta anything else,

note

network manager is updated to function with major telecommunications carrier in Nigeria (MTN, GLO, CELTEL) for every other one, it detects the modem and you would have to input either the apn or the dial up numba.
