Re: Ubuntu Linux
« #1228 on: August 30, 2009, 02:12 AM »

Guys am back, This time I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 in my hp compaq Laptop. My Laptop came pre-installed with windows vista and have 3 Primary Partitions. After using perfect disk to defragment the hard disk (160GB), I had like 49GB free space but i could not shrink the hard disk to enable me install Ubuntu. After much searching, (i didn't want to use third party application like Partition Magic like someone suggested) I rebooted the system in safe mode and wow! I was able the shrink the hard disk using Vista Disk Management Application.
Then come the problem of installing, using the Ubuntu CD, I could see the free space(After shrinking i had 20GB unallocated space, I selected 20GB while shrinking)  but when i click on use the free space to install Ubuntu, it show me that Ubuntu can only be installed in about 3GB of hard disk. The Vista colour just fills the whole bar of the memory(if u understand what i mean)
I had to read thru this thread from the beginning and thanks to mimoh_mi, his post on the manual partition thing really helped out. I created a root logical partition allocating 16BG of it then use the remaining as swap memory! (you do this in the process of installing Ubuntu)
Finally here we are, and the first thing i noticed is that Ubuntu doesn't play mp3 but i believe i've seen a solution somewhere in the thread so i have to read thru again. but that would be tomorrow, its 2:00am and i've spent the whole day doing this.
Installing on the desktop was very easy cos the hard disk was partitioned into 2, one was still inactive and i used that partition to install Ubuntu
Have to go catch some sleep now, will continue again morrow, Thanking you guys for all the help
Goodnight, sorry Good Morning, Happy Sunday

you can checkhttp://www.gnome-look.org for themes, icon sets and wallpapers. installation is pretty straightforward. just go to system >> preferences >> appearance and drag the downloaded file into the box or click on install and navigate to the position you saved the file. it will install automatically and ask if you want to apply it. note that on the website, if you want to download themes, goto "metacity" link. for icon themes, there is also a link for that.

To install bin files simply open terminal and drag the bin file into it and press enter.

To change or install new themes, right click on your desktop and choose change background. A window would appear, Choose theme and happy customization.

Thanx, will try. Guess same will apply 4 my openvpn which is a .tar extension? I restarted n d fone started workin back. Strange, thot dt only happens in windows. Will give feedback 2mrw.

Ps. wat do u tink abt my tryin 2 put ubuntu on a old harddrive wit table errors? Usually i run live cds on dt pc, but i found dt mountin and accessin d drive works quite fine thru ubuntu, whilst tryin in windows is a unique form of torture. Maybe d ext3 filesystem will work on dt drive? Abi? Or am jst silly?

@4llerb, have you been able to install the java runtime?
if not try this:
open a console window nd type:
sudo chmod +x <java installer>
then
sudo  <java installer>

where java installer is the name of your installer; you can drag the file to the console,
the full path of the ile will be copied
chmod will make the file executable

by the way how do you connect to the internet in windows? perhaps i could be of
help in configuring your pc for internet connection in linux
