@4llerbe
If you basically want qt4 why not download kde4 applications as it comes with qt libraries and which i think is what matters than trying to compile.

About the proxy thing i have had that problem myself before and it was caused by the update manager working in the background and as you know apt, synaptic and updtate-manager are basically the same (thing more or less). Simple reboot fixed that. And you said that you are not using any proxy directly or indirectly? open top in terminal and see if any application that might be using apt, like if u using mint there about four or five application using apt in mint. google for the problem cos am always too lazy to consult google

thnks jare my broda, av already arranged the qt.
that port thing is realy annoying and av tried restarting and all that to no avail. been googling too. the closest av come to an answer is a prog called lsof. am yet to download it sha, will try that too. its supposed to be able to show u wat application is using what port.

i spend my lesure time with ubuntu dese days so am always full of issues. i was trying to co-opt a new desciple today and i suceeded only so fatr. his install had no sound so he was discouraged.

the thing is the sound card is an intel/ conexant ac97 audio thingy.  the system actually sees the card.
lspci, lsmod | grep all give valid answers, even in the sound settings the card is right there as seen with its full name for alsa,

but no sound. iv tried to modprobe but i dunnowats happening o!n even terminal commands aint working e.g update-modules says no such cmd and so on and so forth.

PLS IF U KNW HOW TO WAKE THE THING PLS TELL ME

i take it he has only one sound card right? sometimes i have a problem with sound but usually the problem is that i have 2 sound cards and my music player is trying to use the other soud card

what about using alsamixer what do you see?, it may be that something is muted

if you still have the problem you could paste the output of lspci and give us a screenshot of alsamixer

at the rate u are going, you'll soon be better than us, some of the issues you've raised are on things i havent yet tried, i guess i'm either too busy or am not as challenged as i used to be

oh d bloke has left my end jare. he wanted to yank the thing but i told him not to as i would solve it. Hmnnn, well i did check the alsa mixer in terminal and nothing was muted. dunno oh. lspci did list the card too. next time i see him i will continue that thing.

weaver wat do u think caused my data loss? really strange.

then id really appreciate help with that issue with ripping cd's. i pulled grip,  asunder, audio cd extractor in terminal but they all do not work. for 1 they refuse to rip mp3's. i can play mp3's so i guess the codecs are present. whenever i start ripping into any format they simply close.

Re: Ubuntu Linux
« #1476 on: October 16, 2009, 10:48 AM »

the problem is that most open source software have a problem with proprietary formats; unfortunately i've only used kde-based applications to rip to mp3 and even they didn't do that well; however have you tried soundjuicer? i googled ripping to mp3 and that was the first thing that came up and it's gnome- based too; perhaps that may work

about the data lss, when did that happen? i think i missed that although that could happen if your pc suddenly went off - especially if you were copying a file - but i don't know the scope of your data loss

just wondering; how many partitions do you install ubuntu to? i.e. do you have your user home directory on another partition or everything is on one partition 'cos is seems all you lost was your user settings basically all the things in your /home/user folder; i may be wrong though; what i'm trying to say is that if that is so then it may be that your user home folder may be on another partition that is not getting mounted in which case check the /etc/fstab file and your boot messages to see if and why a partition is not being mounted (not i'm fishing here, if everything is on one partition this will not work)

but was it just the contents of your  home folder that you lost?
how any OSes do you have on that pc?
i don't know how you can recover those files but i have a suggestion that could help for the future especially if you have more than one OS on that pc:
my pc is heavily partitioned; like you know i use many OSes because of this a lot of my files are on other partitions; for instance i have a partition dedicated for mp3s since i want to be able to play them from any OS; also program setup files that are downloaded are on a separate partition, that way if i do a fresh install i can get most of those programs back without going back t help for further useghto the internet -- just thought that mi

@4llerbe
yeah blackweaver is right that unless your home directly that fail to mount that kinda of thing has not happened to me b4 in my years of using linux solely and try sound juicer its the best around and concerning your music reaper crashing of some sort lunch them from the terminal you know that should give you the clue where the problem lies. If its lack of mp3 encoder thats causing them to crash install lame.

I cant wait for the new gnome to arrive or maybe i'll be making my switch back to kde. Cheerio

o boy 4llerbe na wa oh, next thing you'll be asking how to modify the kernel source code to work with some hardware that only came out yesterday, u just dey fly go; anyway i'm sure it's possible only i've never tried it or been interested in doin so. pity bigrovar np longer comes around, he might hav had some ideas; as it is u'll probably have to google it up, though i don't think u'll have to search for long before you find an answer to your issue (although i think the dd command might work but like i said google it up)

@4llerbe
Theres this debian/ubuntu application that does it though its natively debian package have forgotten the name but its in the normal ubuntu repository, forgotten the name but just search the synaptic, if i remember well after mirroring your drive if allows you to burn it to the dvd the file system alone and not your personal files i.e content of the home folder you can boot from it as a live cd from another system. its awesome have only used it once and thats a long time ago but i stumbled upon it live last year while checking for a particular application through the synaptic. goodlucks

The reason why i dont post is because of this very forum its a pain in the ass sometimes what you post will not be displayed and what i posted yesterday was not what i originally submit. Anyway you can search the synaptic and am not talking about quick search use the word livecd and check the result one by one and am sure you'll see it the pacage name start with d,sorry i have this short memory problem. yes it can mirror the harddrive to create some sort of livedvd that you can used to boot from another system other the one you create the dvd from. I don have a linux system now i could hv search for it you

never heard of a new kernel causing data loss; i've recompiled my kernel more than once  (tho not recently), even had multiple kernels so i could choose which to boot with and it has bnever affected my user files; as for the proxifier thing i will try to find out what it does and look for something that works similarly

And there are other ways to install apart frm make, it depends on d sourcn files. And since dis open kiosk is based on fedora, am suspecting maybe u will hav 2 get d source files of some dependencies frm dt site too n compile them seperately. Maybe after u hav done 1 system successfully u can make a deb frm all those source files for oda systems
