Re: Ubuntu Linux
« #160 on: November 24, 2006, 08:36 AM »

So how much space do I need to budget for VMWare and WinXP installation? I wish i could just refer VMware to my existing XP installation so I can use Ubuntu all the time.

I don't have much HDD space left because my 60GB laptop HDD is almost gone even though I've burnt most of my irrelevant files on DVD, not much space to spare anymore, I partitioned 6GB for linux, 5Gb for the OS and 1.5GB for swap space.

Help me o.

I can help you with downloads, i'm with a major ISP, so I'm connected directly 2 Sat-3, esp. at night. Ubuntu however took me 3hours 30 minutes to download.

Just send the link. If you stay @ ilupeju, I can drop d CD @ Palmgrove Estate so you can come pick it up.

Meanwhile, I don't want to waste my HD space if i'll need to install XP again ( I already have 2 XP installations on my HDD.)

Thanks adewaleafolabi, thanks for the offer, but i already have two cds of ubuntu,
my problem is that it just won't go past 55% when it installs.I have about 40gig which I reckon should be plenty.
I 'm thinking of trying another distro but ubuntu appealed because I didn't have to mess with looking for drivers and all that, even for my  network connections.

@All

One fact about Linux, it gives us the power to explore. So if a particular process works for me,
it might not work for you. Why ?, different kernel exit for different processor. Personally, am using
amd, but an Intel clone works for me, however slow. So had to download the amd k7 kernel, and
my speed was hoooommme. My advice on dual system, is to install windows first, as the boot loader
will detect it, but if you install Linux first, the MBR of the HDD will be overridden by windows
installation. If possible to use the boot loader to install windows, but long process.
For the partitioning, I stick my neck, please don't cut it sha, with partition magic, your window
installation remains intact.

@ adewaleafolabi

Please can u help me download sun solaris 10. I uses dial up with make downloading large files
difficult, and with our brother PHCN, one can't be sure of power for that long. Thanks in
anticipation

These are just the characteristics of the modem and the driver. We don't need most
of these infos  to use the modem. Ok type dmesg on your terminal. You should get a
message like this :

@christino

Thanks for the offer, here is the link to solaris solaris download page,
On the page, select only solaris.
http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp

@adewaleafolabe
Used same script we have been build. The only difference was
that I had to get the celtel IP address from windows system,which
i posted. Notice that you have to set your phone to use data as against sim
for the motorola blade. Basically, switch whatever phone to data, or data/voice
if availabe. Connection was very slow. Before, I forget also make sure you are
able to connect directly from the phone before setting it up with your system.
Sorry, I don't use GSM, Why very personal.

@rozilla
Basically, your message indicate that the starcomm modem was detected by your system.
So,you get to it details like manufacturer, model,driver, etc So, what you need to do know is
type run the configuration wizard like, this will actually tell you which /dev the modem is
attached to and build your connection scripts for you. Dead simple ok ! Just follow this step

sudo wvdialconf
  --detech the modem and the /dev which it attached, write your first script /etc/wvdial.conf
next command

sudo pppconfig
  --GUI application easy to use, just supply username and password, DNS ip  address, authentication
method, alway use PAP, starcomms does't support CHAP. Also, use static IP not dynamic.
Finally
pon starcomms
you sre connected.
Last thing to note. If you have other usb devices connected to your system, it is better to
unplug them, run your configuration and then re-plug them back,the reason, is Ubuntu
dynamically hotplug usb devices, and the wvdialconf might not be able to detech the modem.
If you must leave them, then you either have to plug the modem and re-start  the system or
hit ctr-alt-backspace to restart the system without having to shutdown.Then run the config tools

@adewaleafolabi

Finally got the celtel connection working, speed was just good enough.
Infact am making this post with the connection. Here are the procedure.
PROCEDURE 1

open the terminal and type
sudo wvdialconf celtel          // just to setup another connection, named it celtel

A file name celtel will be created for your. So type
sudo gedit celtel and edit the file as follows

[Dialer Defaults]
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
Modem Type = USB Modem
; Phone = *99#
ISDN = 0
; Password = 0000
; Username = 0000
Stupid Mode = 1
Modem = /dev/ttyACM0
Baud = 460800
FlowControl = Hardware (CRTSCTS)

save the file.
To avoid editing other files manually type
sudo pppconfig
just file the stuff as we did earlier,
specify the DNS, PAP authentication  and co.
when you are through.

Type sudo wvdial celtel
you should get an output like this.

mimoh@mimoh-laptop:~$ sudo wvdial celtel
Password:
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.55
--> Warning: section [Dialer celtel] does not exist in wvdial.conf.
--> Cannot get information for serial port.
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT*99#
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT*99#
CONNECT
--> Carrier detected.  Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Tue Nov 28 21:52:25 2006
--> Pid of pppd: 7648
--> Using interface ppp0
--> pppd: [05][08]
--> pppd: [05][08]
--> pppd: [05][08]
--> local  IP address 10.100.134.216
--> pppd: [05][08]
--> remote IP address 192.168.100.101
--> pppd: [05][08]
--> primary   DNS address 196.46.241.5
--> pppd: [05][08]
--> secondary DNS address 196.46.241.6
--> pppd: [05][0

do worry, you will get the connection, but still can browse.
open your browser, click Edit ---- Preferences
click Connection Setting and select Manual Proxy Configuration and type
   172.18.254.5
in the Http Proxy textfield and 8080 in the proxy port field restart the browser and
enjoy free celtel internet access.

# replace password with your password.
# If you have different providers with different passwords then you better
# remove the following line.

/etc/ppp/resolve/celtel

# resolv.conf created by pppconfig for celtel
nameserver 196.46.241.5
nameserver 196.46.241.6

Note
After getting the system to detech the modem, just proceed with pppconfig
It will write the DNS Ip addresses to /etc/ppp/resolve/celtel ,
write the chap and pap secret files.

finally set the proxy of the browser manually. and should look like
this.

Discovered that with the settings above, you can not
browse some sites using other protocols like https
and co. So, Just select the Use this proxy server for
all protocols. Here is my settings. It works for me.

Hello Ubuntu Freaks' Grin,
I've been away for couple of weeks,  very very busy! Huh

On my way to the office,  i received a call from Afolabi (adewaleafolabi) that his sim got spoilt so he couldnt come online and that his number could not be reached for the main time.

So if you want to contact him,   you may call this number
08058554739

Now I need some help,

My system spec first

P4 1.8gh
384 RAM
80 G (20g for linux)

Cloned system

The Problem,
every steps go through but failed to create swap space which makes  the installation exit.

Though am planning to buy a new HDD so i can installl my linux on it. I have install successfully on a branded system (which i'd to uninstall for HDD space reason).

The last time i used  partition magic,  i lost my files including my projects,  that had no backups.

What do u guy think could be the problem to the swap failure? etc. any suggestion is welcome.
