How do I configure my starcomms Huawei ETS2556 phone?!
« #554 on: November 30, 2007, 10:58 PM »

Help!!!
I just installed Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon a week ago and I can't get the thing to detect my Starcomms Huawei ETS2556 phone. I'm using a USB cable not serial.

I tried "sudo wvdialconf" and I got this:

"Scanning your serial ports for a modem.

ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 2400 baud, next try: 9600 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- failed with 9600 baud, next try: 115200 baud
ttyS0<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 -- and failed too at 115200, giving up.
Port Scan<*1>: S1   S2   S3   S4   S5   S6   S7   S8
Port Scan<*1>: S9   S10  S11  S12  S13  S14  S15  S16
Port Scan<*1>: S17  S18  S19  S20  S21  S22  S23  S24
Port Scan<*1>: S25  S26  S27  S28  S29  S30  S31  S32
Port Scan<*1>: S33  S34  S35  S36  S37  S38  S39  S40
Port Scan<*1>: S41  S42  S43  S44  S45  S46  S47  S48
Port Scan<*1>: S49  S50  S51  S52  S53

Sorry, no modem was detected!  Is it in use by another program?
Did you configure it properly with setserial?"

By the way, what is setserial?
Please help so that I can finally kiss windows goodbye, downloading all those dependencies manually is a serious pain in the ass.

Re: Ubuntu Linux
« #565 on: April 17, 2008, 10:30 AM »

well to have it on  your system u have to install what is called grub-gfx which is the tool that give some applelling visual effect to grub ,  to install
u can download it here [url]http://quasarfreak.googlepages.com/grub-gfxboot_0.97-5_i386.deb[/url]

please note this tutor is involves the use of commands ,  if u are not comfortable with sing commands then i would suggest u don't try this ,  it could damage your system and kill your kitten  Cheesy

make sure that u remove grub first from your system before u proceed ,  open synaptics and remove grub or sudo apt-get reome grub in terminal

u can follow the rest of the tutor  here  http://tuxenclave.wordpress.com/2008/01/18/how-to-install-gfx-grub-in-ubuntu/

@ Namdi
the conky guide

u have to create a text file in your home folder ,  so open gedit ,  and copy and paste the fllwing code inside it ,

Code:
background yes
use_xft yes
xftfont ComicSansMS:size=8
xftalpha 0.1
update_interval 0.5
total_run_times 0
own_window yes
own_window_type normal
own_window_transparent yes
own_window_hints undecorated,below,sticky,skip_taskbar,skip_pager
double_buffer yes
minimum_size 200 5
maximum_width 200
draw_shades no
draw_outline no
draw_borders no
draw_graph_borders no
default_color white
default_shade_color red
default_outline_color green
alignment top_right
gap_x 18
gap_y 48
no_buffers yes
uppercase no
cpu_avg_samples 2
net_avg_samples 1
override_utf8_locale no
use_spacer yes

TEXT
Ubuntu 7.10
CPU $alignr${freq_g cpu0}Ghz
$alignr
CPU:1  ${cpu cpu1}% ${cpubar cpu1}
CPU:2  ${cpu cpu2}% ${cpubar cpu2}

MEM $alignc $mem / $memmax $alignr $memperc%
$membar

/ $alignc ${fs_used /} / ${fs_size /} $alignr ${fs_free_perc /}%
${fs_bar /}

/home $alignc ${fs_used /home} / ${fs_size /home} $alignr ${fs_free_perc /home}%
${fs_bar /home}

Disk i/o ${diskiograph 16,200}

Processes
$alignr $running_processes Running
$alignr $processes Sleeping

IP on eth1 $alignr ${addr eth0}

Down $alignr ${downspeed eth0} kb/s
${downspeedgraph eth0}
Up $alignr ${upspeed eth0} kb/s
${upspeedgraph eth0 16,200}

${voffset -7}$hr $color

save this in your home folder and name it  .conkyrc  don't forget to put the fullstop in front,  it makes it invisible ,

now in other not to make it flicker u have to add this to your x.org file

open your x.org file

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

find the section titled Section "Module", and add
Code:
        Load    "dbe"

to make it start with your system u need to create to creat a startup scrit which would be saved in your home folder

open your gedit and paste this code inside

Code:
#!/bin/bash
sleep 60 && conky;

have it in your home folder as .conky_start.sh

Make sure the script is executable:  by running this in terminal

Code:
chmod a+x .conky_start.sh

and add it to your startup programs (menu: system->preferences->session->startup programs browse to your home folder and choose the conky_start.sh script u just created,  if u don't see it right click and check show hidden files ,

there u have it ,  your own conky ,

here is mine  u can see it on the right side of my screen ,  its a text based system monitor

Its been a while since I have upgraded from Ubuntu 7.10 LTS Desktop Edition to Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition.

I have the 7.10 version on my flash now I want to go for the 8.04.

I want to know if anyone has attempted it and how good it worked on the flash.

If there is no response till tomorrow I am going for it anyway.

I just want to know.

The only only thing that may slow me down is the .bat launcher.
