A co-pilot died during a flight from Britain to Cyprus at the weekend but the plane diverted and landed safely in Turkey, the airline, GB Airways, said on Monday.

The captain of the GB Airways Airbus A320, which had 156 passengers on board, landed at Istanbul airport after he was forced to divert due to a "medical emergency".

The flight left Manchester at 2:20 p.m. on Sunday for Paphos in western Cyprus.

"GB Airways confirms that yesterday's flight BA 6826 from Manchester to Paphos diverted to Istanbul due to a medical emergency on the flight deck," the airline said in a statement.

"On landing, it was confirmed that the first officer (co-pilot) had died during the flight. At no time was the aircraft, passengers or crew in any danger."

It gave no details of the co-pilot or how he had died but said his next of kin had been informed.
