At last, LAMATA's BRT starts with 126 buses After months of speculation, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has assured Lagosians that on Tuesday, March 18, the new Bus Rapid Transit, (BRT) system would definitely commence.
It is expected to run partly on physically segregated lanes on the Mile 12- CMS corridor.
The Managing Director of the authority, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, who disclosed this on Monday said the project, which was the first of its kind in the whole of Sub-Saharan, Africa would begin with 100 blue and 26 red buses.
To make allowance for smooth take off of the system, Mobereola said there would also be zero -tolerance on street-trading along the corridor, while driving or propelling whether mechanically or otherwise, of articulated vehicles, heavy duty vehicles, lorries, trailers and tankers on BRT corridor will be restricted to hours between 11.00a.m. and 4.00p.m. and between 11.00p.m. and 5.00a.m.
According to him, about N4.5billion has been spent on infrastructural development for the project, thereby making it one of the cheapest in the world, at $1.8m on a kilometre.
Elated that the challenges of the past several months would soon translate to memorable times for the commuting public, Mobereola said from March 10, non-compliance would attract the full weight of the law.
He said, “With the start of the BRT lite, transportation in Lagos especially along the corridor would cease to be a nightmare.
" Only BRT lite buses are expected to use the segregated lanes, while danfos and molues plying Ikorodu Road to CMS through Funsho Williams Avenue are to restrict their use of the corridor to the service lanes as LAMATA has invested in repairs of the service lanes to make them motorable again" he added.
The buses to be operated by LAGBUS and National Union of Road Transport Workers, Coops, he said would operate between 6.00a.m. and 10.00p.m. with three types of tickets.
While LAGBUS handles the express service, the normal bus stop- to- bus stop system would be operated by the National Union of Road Transport Workers, (NURTW) cooperatives.
He called for understanding from Lagosians to make the project work, as loading and un-loading of goods would be restricted to service lanes of the BRT lite corridor between 11.00a.m. and 4.00p.m. and between 11.00p.m. and 5.00a.m.
Shadow runs of the BRT lite, he also, said would begin tomorrow 28/02/2008.
