HI EVERYONE. AM 25, WITH A DIPLOMA. I DON'T HAVE A BSC COS I JUST COULDN'T GET MYSELF TO GO THRU WITH IT. THIS IS BECOS WHAT I ACTUALLY WANT TO AND HAVE BEEN DOING (IN A SMALL WAY) IS EVENT MANAGEMENT. THAT'S WHERE MY HEART IS AND SO FAR I'VE PROVEN TO BE GOOD AT IT. MY PROBLEM IS THIS, EVERYONE EXPECTS ME TO GET A DEGREE, EVERYONE LIKE FAMILY, FRIENDS AND SOCIETY I MIGHT ADD BUT I THINK IT'S A WASTE FOR ME SINCE WHATEVER I GO TO STUDY IS NOT WHAT I'LL APPLY IN MY CAREER CHOICE. WHAT I WANT TO DO IS GET A CERTIFICATION IN EVENT MANAGEMENT AND FORMALLY OPEN MY OWN EVENT CONSULTING FIRM. THE FINANCE PART AM STILL WORKING ON COS PRESENTLY I HAVE ANOTHER JOB WHICH PAYS ME ABOUT N50K A MONTH AND I HAVE SAVINGS OF ABOUT N300K. IT IS NOT MUCH BUT IT CAN GET ME STARTED. MY PROBLEM IS WHETHER TO JUST DISS THE BSC AND ENROLL FOR MY EVENT MANGT CERTIFICATION WHICH WILL COST ME ABOUT N150K AND AT COMPLETION SET UP MY FIRM? OR ENROLL IN A PART TIME STUDY IN WHATEVER DISCIPLINE JUST FOR THE SAKE OF GETTING A DEGREE, COMPLETE IT BEFORE STARTING THE FIRM. THE EVENT CERTIFICATION IS ACTUALLY A DIPLOMA IN EVENT MANAGEMENT AND IT'S A FULL COURSE IN THAT IT COVERS ALL AREAS OF AN EVENT. GOING FROM SETTING UP YOUR BUSINESS TO WAYS OF ACQUIRING CLIENTS, MARKETING YOUR BUSINESS, AND THE ACTUAL EVENT PLANING. THE COURSE IS QUITE COMPREHENSIVE.
PLS I NEED HELP COS SOMETIMES I FEEL LIKE I DON'T QUITE HAVE A LIFE. I FEEL LIKE AM WASTING WHEN I KNOW FOR SURE THAT THERE'S SO MUCH I CAN DO AND DO VERY WELL EXPECT THAT I DON'T HAVE A DEGREE!

To me, i prefer you go ahead with your plan to get the certification and forget about the degree program for now. When you are fully made, you can enroll and get a degree. You can even do an online degree progam with universities abroad if you have the money. So, go ahead and get the certification, start your own firm and make the money, get the degree later.

I agree. Goodluck. Especially as the Nigerian degrees received these days are not better than certifications anyway, you really have nothing to lose!  |

Yes i think i agree with the previous posters. Nigerian degrees are really poorly rated in most parts of the world. I wonder why my father spent loads o' cash in a Nigerian uni for a degree that i can't use now.
I think you should go on with the event management certification, make yourself the best you can be. Then you can study anywhere you choose. Be good at what you do.
