Java seems to be the dominant language for mobile application development, so choose Java!

I didn't know that one could use Visual Basic to write mobile applications.  Are you sure about this?  Can you educate us further?  Or do you mean the very different VisualBasic.NET in the .NEt framework?

He must be referring to VB.NET, i have written an address book applications for smart fones sometin very basic. It may be possible to write mobile application in VB6 but twill be difficult i can't imagine.

VB.NET can be used to create amazing mobile application including database driven applications. I am familiar with creating applications for smartphones and PDAs. if u r familiar with Visual Studio, there is a module in there to build applications in vb for smart phones just like you would for a desktop application.

The only thing you have  note is that whatever application you design with  .NET will run only on Smartphones and PDA running windows mobile operating sytems such as Pocket  PC, Windows CE.NET, and wiindows CE.

VB.NET is quite good for mobile app development though i've never tried it. i'll advise u to use java because i feel it is more robust for mobile app development and also ther are certainly more mobile developers using java than VB in nigeria(just in case you need help).

As has been indicated, I think it all depends on the target operating system you are developng for. If it's Windows, then .NET (VB , C# or C++) would be a good choice however if it's Symbian for example then I believe java will do the job nicely.

If you are developing for Windows, then I think it's worth noting that the latest release of Visual Studio (Visual Studio 2005) actually makes development of mobile applications very easy and comes with a built in emulator for debugging and testing along with a host of other tools.

hhi guys i suggest JAVA for your mobile application because it is save(more secured)  and it has the ability to extend its functionalities to some other areas convinenetly, such as ORACLE. JAVA could also be embedded with VB applications. finaly, java has a bright future.

I wouldn't really say JAVA is anymore secure than vb.net (it's as secure as YOU write it)
VB is known far far far far more than JAVA for interoperability with DB app's than java is, and referencing in visual basic couldn't be easier.

I've got a boxed copy of vs2005 with the complete set of mobile tools and it's great (it was a gift from a friend Smiley )

Smartsoft, you can build mobile apps with vb, targeting both windows mobile and symbian platforms. Do a google search for appforge, or go to appforge.com. A search for "embedded vb" will give some interesting results. Visual studio.net has native support for mobile apps. Java is also ok, sorry i don't know much about java.

For Mobile development C++ and Java rules. Considering the fact that the Symbian OS is currently available in majority of handsets. An app developed for that platform would surely have a ready market. Check out a list of phones supporting it here http://www.symbian.com/phones/index.html
And if you are looking for a development environment why not try the nokia developers kit at

Java rocks.

You can load java appliations on a lot of new phones because they support it. I didn't even know VB could be used.

Question: how do you compile java codes for phones?

You can either download the nokia developers kit at http://www.forum.nokia.com/main.html or you download the J2ME  wireless kit at http://java.sun.com/javame/. These kits have phone emulation software that allows you to test your apps and transfer developed apps to ur phone.
