Thoughts from Golgotha (Issue 1)

ABORTION: When Does Life Begin?

(N.B: While this week’s subject is highly controversial and of global concern, the writer has simply put this piece together, neither on moral nor medical grounds, but purely as an intellectual puzzle… I do sincerely hope it would unwind rather than agitate you.)

“Unrestricted abortion is wrong, even if it is a right.”
                                          --- Roy Maynard

“Since when does anyone’s right to live depend on someone else wanting them? Killing the unwanted is a monstrous evil.”                                   --- Dr. John Willke

“More than 95% of children killed by abortion are killed for reasons of convenience, not incest, not rape, not the physical condition of the unborn, and not the threatened health of the mother.”
                                       --- quoted by Charles R.

Swindoll in “Why I Stand For Life”

Definitions of Abortion
§        Death Before Birth
§        The Silent Holocaust
§        Post-Conceptive Fertility Control
§        Voluntary Miscarriage
§        Every Woman’s Right
§        A Right That Is Wrong

What is your definition?

Interesting Case Studies
Would you consider abortion in any of the following 4 situations?

1.                  There’s a preacher and wife who are very poor. They already have 14 children, and now she finds out she’s pregnant with the 15th. They’re living in tremendous poverty. Considering their poverty and the excessive world population, would you consider recommending an abortion?

2.                The father is sick with a bad cold; the mother has tuberculosis (TB). They have 4 children. The first is blind, second is dead, third is deaf, and fourth has TB. She finds that she’s pregnant again. Given their extreme situation, would you consider recommending an abortion?

3.                A white man has raped a 13-year-old black girl, and she became pregnant. If you were her parents, would you consider recommending an abortion?

4.                A teenage girl is pregnant. She’s not married. Her fiancé is not the father of the baby, and he’s concerned. Would you consider recommending an abortion?

***

1.  If you said yes to the 1st case, you just killed John Wesley.

2. If you said yes to the 2nd case, you killed Ludwig van Beethoven.

3. If you said yes to the 3rd case, you killed Ethel Waters, the great black singer who thrilled audiences for many years at Billy Graham’s Crusades around the world.

4. And if you said yes to the 4th case, you killed Jesus Christ.

When does life begin?
On a radio call-in show, the conversation focused on the point at which life begins. The Priest (who was the guest) believed that life begins at the moment of conception. Some other callers believed that life begins when the baby takes its first breath outside the womb.

One caller had a different opinion. “I believe,” he said, “that life begins when the last kid leaves home, and the dog dies.”

What is your opinion?

Shalom!

This is a very interesting thread. The case scenarios painted are equally interesting. While the subject of when the soul (or life, as you may want to call it) enters the foetus remains an intensely debated subject, i believe that decisions regarding abortion remain an individual thing, based on one's circumstances and preferences.

What may be termed right condition to have a baby for one may be very inconvenient for another. If Beethoven, John Wesley and Ethel Waters were destined to exist on earth, i am sure that the great mysterious force that guides our existence on earth and other worldly phenomenon would surely find a way for them to exist, irrespective of the fact that a set of parents aborted their foetuses.

A food for thought, did you actually get the Jesus scenario right? I thought some angel or the other appeared to Joseph to reassure him of the heavenly paternity of the baby child. Please no offence meant to any religion. This is purely an intellectual exercise. In any case, was there anything like abortion then?
