Ikoyi, VI have world’s highesthospital density – Kuku

Olamilekan Lartey, Ikoyi

Ikoyi and Victoria Island in Lagos have the highest hospital density in the world.

One of the founders of the EKO Hospital Group, Chief Sonny Kuku, said the concentration of high quality medical facilities in both sections of Lagos was an indication of the development in the nation’s health sector.

Speaking with our correspondent in an interview in Warri on Thursday, Kuku said the high hospital density in Ikoyi and Victoria Island was an indication of the financial implication of quality health care delivery.

He said, “If you look around now, every other street has a hospital because of the belief that people can pay.”

He noted, however, that health care delivery in the country was better than what it was at independence.

Kuku lamented, however, that the problem confronting the nation’s medicare was how to provide and maintain the required facilities.

This, he noted, demanded a new health policy, which would include an insurance scheme that would guarantee access to high quality medicare for all Nigerians

He said, “Where the doctors will practise and how they practise and what they will use is the problem we have now. The only way we can deal with it is to encourage the private sector and to encourage third-party payment like the health insurance scheme.”

Kuku noted that there might be hiccups at the beginning, adding that it was the only solution to the nation’s health problems.

He argued that it was the politicians who spread the idea of free health programmes without making adequate provisions in the budget for the service.

I wonder why the high density in VI and Ikoyi and not in Mushin, Ajegunle, etc. It has nothing to do with healthcare delivery quality, rather a fierce  financial battle for the VI & Ikoyi millionaires pockets.

Meanwhile the people in VI and Ikoyi are far healthier than those in Mushin, Ajegunle etc.  Maybe they are going to the hospital to do plastic surgery to improve their beauty etc.  The real people that need the services can neither afford or gain access to the services.

This information is of little or no importance, that's if it's a confirmed truth anyways..

the only reason i'D imagine its true is that lagos is small with a high population so those that service the rich will be highly concentrated like the entire state.

but more importantly, what are other states doing to raise the health standards. this isnt good news

If this statement is accurate it is indeed a tragedy that Ikoyi n VI which house a vry minuscle proportion of people livin in lagos will have the highest hospital density in the country.

Come to think of its just indicative of our cash and carry mentality, hospitals are now struggling for deposits from our society's "deep pockets", i wonder what has happened to their hippocratic oath? this is a dangerous trend.

Tho' i agree that health insurance is absolutely imperative, my grouse is that none of the carriers has a people friendly scheme they simply hav failed to come up with an acceptable working model. Most of the carriers r just leeches, usually the only plan a struggling person (who r the majority) can subscribe to will only provide u panadol and plaster, so wats the use? lets just invest our money in the church and always giving God all the thanks and praises for His favour at not having to see any doctor regularly
