Those old folks really dealt with us in those 'growing up' days oh Shocked. Neverteless, some of those 'do's and don'ts' were actually meant to teach us some moral lessons, but I don't know why we were not told  the true repercussions. For example, let's look at my own list and see the difference between the lies they told us and what they actually wanted to prevent:

1)  Don't eat at the entrance of the house, you will not be filled (you will prevent easy passage by others and more importantly someone passing across your food will most certainly shake off some dirt into your plate of food!).

2) Don't look into the mirror when your hair is being plaited, you will  go blind. (your persistent look into the mirror may call for complaint that the hair is  not done well enough and that the doer should adjust this or that side, blah blah, therefore, for maximum concentration, do not look into the mirror)

3) Don't wash clothes at night or your husband will die (kids like me who found it difficult to wash a piece of cloth clean during the day would definitely not wash it clean at night)

4) If you walk about  with your hair half-plaited and a fly perches on it, somebody (av forgotten who) will die (children were thereby being taught to complete one assignment before laying hand on another (especially playing).

5)  Don't collect rain water with your hand or else your hand will be shaking for life or you will attract thunderstorm (we all know a child can catch cold by doing this).

6) Don't sweep at night or somebody  will die  (the floor swept might not be clean, simple!). Another one on sweeping is 'don't collect dirt swept with your hand or your hand will be shaking for life (this is simple hygiene nah!)

In order not to bore you, I'll come back later with the ones I don't know what morals they teach.
Peace.

1. Don't answer any call at night if you are not sure who the caller is or else you will be answering the spirits

2. If you are running late for an errand for your mother, just get some grass and knot them together - she will not remember to ask you what made come late

3. If you sit on the floor while eating, you will never get filled, because the whole food is going down into the ground

4. If you witness the burial of your father in a dream, then he will live long

If you drew lines on the bare ground with a stick & a fly perched on it, your mom's breasts would fall inside the cooking pot whilst cooking!

I never drew lines on the ground as a kid!! Grin
